Background Around the world, vast amounts of healthcare  information are exchanged on a daily basis information are exchanged on a daily basis.  Standardized format is needed to ensure that the  data is universally understood and organized.  In order to achieve this, all healthcare information  must be sent in a specialized healthcare language. The common language that has been developed to  overcome these obstacles is HL7. NUST School of Electrical Engineering and  Computer Science

Case Study Case Study CITILAB (Pakistan) CITILAB NUST School of Electrical Engineering and  Computer Science

14

CITILab Current Problems Mailing charges is cost overhead. Deliveries of reports are often delayed that leads to patient dissatisfaction. Lack of reliable delivery of reports: report results are dictated via phone which are often error prone. Manual entry at sender and receiver side is time consuming. Customers will not ready to attend the lab due to not entertainment g reports, p , which need outer lab communication. of urgent NUST School of Electrical Engineering and  15 Computer Science

What CITILab Requires The messages exchanged among different branches/collection points should deliver information of patients, test orders, test results and patient bills. The messages exchanged should be automated by eliminating human manual entry to the system. system

The information should be reliably communicated. The information should be confidential, even if interrupted by intruder during transmission, it should not be interpreted. The system should also be able to exchange messages with other authorized l b t i information i f ti systems. t laboratories NUST School of Electrical Engineering and  Computer Science

HL7 Business Case • HL7 is adapting all over the world due to – Globally leading healthcare interoperability standard – True, consistent and futuristic standard

• Doctors, Hospitals and other Healthcare centers are  , p looking for HL7 to share information  » But

• There is lack of HL7 experts around the world.  • So opportunity doors are open to all of us. NUST School of Electrical Engineering and  Computer Science
