“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these brothers, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

INTRODUCTION a little bit about us. Welcome to Mission of Hope! We are very excited to have you join with us in giving hope to the people of Haiti. We want to make your trip the best it can be. Thanks again and we hope to see you soon in Haiti The Mission of Hope was founded by Bob & Sharon Johnson in Haiti, where they were able to acquire a piece of barren land just north of Port-auPrince. Their vision was to build a mission complex that would effectively reach out and minister to the physical and spiritual needs of the less fortunate people in Haiti. In 1998, the torch was passed to Bob & Sharon’s son, Brad, and his wife, Vanessa. As they felt the call on their lives to make Haiti their home, they became pioneers of what was to become Mission of Hope as we know it today. The Mission of Hope complex now sits on 76 acres of land and employs over 150 Haitians. Approximately 1,300 children are enrolled in the School of Hope, the Hope House Orphanage is home to almost 60 children, Hope Clinic sees hundreds of patients every week and over 600 adults, youth and children come from surrounding villages to attend the Church of Hope We have 55 schools envolved in our nutition program and everyday over 11,000 children throughout Haiti receive a hot meal at school. We also have over 15 orphanages, well over 1000 children, receiving 3 meals a day through the program. A variety of short-term missions teams including medical, construction and evangelism, visit the Mission of Hope throughout the year. Mission of Hope is Giving Hope to a Nation! There’s so much happening at Mission of Hope, we encourage you to read on and learn more. May God smile on you as you embark on this incredible journey and explore his purposes for you!

BEFORE YOU GO preparing for your trip. One of the most important things you can do to ensure you experience the best possible trip is to plan ahead. International travel can be unpredictable and always requires flexibility, but you can eliminate many “surprises” by being well prepared. PASSPORT All North Americans traveling to Haiti must have a passport. You will not be allowed into Haiti without one. Check with your post office for a passport application, go to the U.S. Department of State web page: http://travel.state.gov/passport or the Passport Canada web page: www.passportcanada.gc.ca. If you are applying for a new passport, please allow 4 – 8 weeks for this process. All travelers should bring a photocopy of the first two pages of their passport in their carry on luggage. FLIGHT Your group is responsible for all airfare and travel arrangements to and from Port au Prince. A Mission of Hope representative will meet you at the airport in Port au Prince and a Mission of Hope driver and transportation will be waiting for you. Be sure to check with the airline for current restrictions, luggage weight limits, etc. prior to arriving at the airport. TRAVEL INSURANCE Travel insurance is required for all groups & individuals traveling to Mission of Hope. If your group is planning to purchase your own travel insurance please make sure that two very important areas are covered: (1) emergency medical treatment costs and (2) for emergency air evacuation from Haiti back to North America. If these areas are covered please email the following information: Insurance company name, address, phone number, contact person, policy # and list of people that are being covered. Please take a copy of the policy along with you to Haiti. If your group does not plan to purchase travel/medical insurance Mission of Hope will cover this at no additional charge to your group. However, if your group is able to help Mission of Hope by covering the cost of the insurance that would be much appreciated! IMMUNIZATIONS Everyone is encouraged to get an up to date tetanus shot. We also recommend getting a Hepatitis A and B vaccine, which will provide longterm protection. You should consult your physician or local health department regarding these and other immunizations you may wish to receive. We also ask that each person bring with them an antibiotic such as Cipro, and an anti-diarrheal medication just in case.

MALARIA PILLS We require that everyone acquire 8 weeks worth of chloroquine or other anti-malaria medication. Travelers must provide their own anti-malaria medication. For chloroquine, a 500mg dosage should be taken 1-2 weeks prior to departure and weekly thereafter for 4 weeks after returning from the trip. Pills should be taken on a full stomach. They should also be taken on the same day of every week. If you weigh less than 90 pounds, you will only be required to take a 250mg dosage. If you are taking other medications or have other medical conditions, please consult your doctor before taking chloroquine. PHYSICAL CONDITION & MEDICATIONS If you are older or are prone to health problems we strongly recommend a thorough physical examination before traveling to Haiti. Also, medical identification (tags, bracelet, card, etc.) must be carried by anyone with chronic illness such as diabetes or heart conditions. If you take prescription medications, bring enough to last the entire trip. Trips to Haiti are moderately stressful and, sometimes, greatly so. Persons with mental illness or physical disability are required to disclose such information to the mission before being approved to travel. Nonetheless, there is a place for anyone who feels led by God to go on one of our trips if he or she is in reasonably good health. If you have special needs while in Haiti (such as a medical condition, food allergies, or other special requirements) please let us know before your trip, and be sure to bring whatever you need with you in your carry on luggage. MEDICAL KIT Everyone going to Haiti should bring their own mini medical kit in their carryon. Items recommended are chloroquine, any prescription medicines you are taking, Band-Aids, first-aid ointment, diarrhea medication, cold tablets, ibuprofen, insect-bite medication, and prescription antibiotic such as Cipro, Bactrim, or Flagyl. INSECTS Extra-strength insect repellent and insecticide spray are useful for repelling mosquitoes and spraying sleeping quarters. (Note: Be sure and bring in your checked bags.)

PLANNING WHAT TO DO why go to Haiti? Each year, hundreds of people travel to Haiti with Mission of Hope. Shortterm mission trips are an incredible opportunity to grow spiritually, to cultivate an awareness of the world and needs around you, and to respond to God’s call to share the Gospel through personal and servant ministry. As a

mission, we covet the opportunity to introduce visitors to all the work God is doing at Mission of Hope. We hope you will catch a glimpse of our vision and are excited to be a part of it. No two mission trips are the same. The most successful trips generally have a few things in common: Strong group leaders, humble team members with a willingness to learn and serve, a common respect for the host country and missionaries, and host missionaries who are willing to facilitate groups. We take short-term trips very seriously, and so should you. Haitian lives are changed as a result of the groups that visit, and just as many North America lives are changed, too. We strive to offer everyone the opportunity for hands-on ministry. We trust that God will work through all the planning, preparation and prayer to make your trip a powerful experience and to glorify Christ. CONSTRUCTION & PAINTING Many trips involve some type of light construction project. This can include laying block, shoveling, pouring cement, laying foundations, painting etc. Carpenters, electricians, and plumbers are always in demand. Please let us know before hand if there are any skilled tradesmen coming on your team. EVANGELISM We believe that all types of service have built-in opportunities for evangelism. However, travelers looking for more focused evangelism experiences can visit Haitian homes door-to-door to share the Gospel in loving and respectful ways. VBS & CAMP PROGRAMS Many groups choose to put on VBS programs or various camps for youth and children. These are often taught in our orphanage, in the orphanages involved in our nutrition program, or out in one of the communities we serve. Please prepare everything for such activities before arriving in Haiti. SERVICES & SEMINARS Groups are welcome to hold a revival at our church or lead seminars for teachers, preachers, women, and anyone else through our church. Please let us know if you would be interested in holding a seminar while visiting Mission of Hope. NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM Each day, more than 15,000 children will eat a meal provided by Mission of Hope (pre-earthquake). Groups can have the opportunity to go on a food distribution, or visit some of the schools and orphanages involved in our nutrition program. ORPHANAGE There are almost 60 children in our orphanage – ranging from babies, to teens – who would love your attention. You can run a day camp, plan an afternoon craft or English lesson, play soccer, marbles or jump rope with

them, simply visit and play, hold a VBS, etc. MEDICAL We have a full time clinic at Mission of Hope and do many mobile clinics in poorer areas of Haiti, we can always use doctors, nurses, dentists, and anyone who is interested in medical work. Please let us know if being part of a medical team interests you. Mobile medical teams will be expected to provide all medications and supplies needed for mobile medical clinics that they will participate in. MEDICAL PERSONNEL Any qualified travelers who come as part of a medical team (doctors, pharmacists, medical assistant, nurses, dental hygienists, etc.) must coordinate their plans ahead of time and are REQUIRED by the Haitian Ministry of Health to provide documentation in advance of their trip to Haiti in order to treat patients. AS SOON AS YOU SIGN UP FOR YOUR TRIP, the following documents are needed in the Mission of Hope office • Passport size photo • Proof of current license • Copy of college diploma Documents should be scanned and emailed AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to Jennifer Williams at [email protected]. The documents must be presented to the Haitian Ministry of Health at least 90 days before your trip. You may want to brush up on your Creole before coming. Take a look! Creole 1. Mesi…..Padkwa

HOW CAN I RAISE SUPPORT? • Tell your church. Consider going to your elders, ministers, or mission committee and tell them what you are doing. Often they will offer to help pay for your trip. Many people who go to Haiti get financial help from their church. • Write support letters. Even if your friends and family are not believers in Christ, many still believe in good causes and will help you financially. It is very rare for anyone in our groups to write letters and not get enough money for their trip. Send letters to friends, your parents’ friends, colleagues, neighbors, etc. You may be surprised to find out how many people are willing to help. If you need guidance, please read the sample support letter included here. It’s also a great idea to include the mission’s web address somewhere in your letter, so supporters can better inform themselves about what you’ll be doing. • Get your community involved. Make it a project with your youth group, friends, family, or neighbors. Hold a garage sale, car wash, bake sale, or auction. • Use holidays. Instead of asking for birthday or Christmas gifts, ask family and friends to help you go on a mission trip. You will find that the sacrifice of giving up a present will pale in comparison to the joy of serving Christ in Haiti. • Be sure to send thank-you notes to your supporters. And while you’re at it, bringing them small gifts from Haiti is also a great way to show your appreciation. HOW CAN I SUPPORT MISSION OF HOPE ON MY TRIP? • Help the clinic: Help support our clinic by bringing in antibiotic creams, eye drops, Tylenol (children’s and adults), Ibuprofen, cough medicine, vitamins, antacids, and HP 60 printer cartridges. A separate list of prescription medications needed in the clinic will be provided for medical teams by Dr. Cheryl van der Mark, Mission of Hope medical coordinator. • Help the orphanage: we are always in need of children’s clothes, shoes, sandals, backpacks, bars of soap, toothpaste, selsum blue shampoo, twin sheets and vinyl mattress covers. • Tell your church, family and friends about the work God is doing through the mission and how they can help. We rely on people like you to spread the good news about our ministry. When you go home, use your God-given talents to write letters, give presentations, share photos, or develop a website about your trip.

SAMPLE SUPPORT LETTER Dear Friends, I hope things are going well with you. I have some exciting news that I wanted to share! A group from my church will be going on a mission trip to the country of Haiti. I have thought about this, prayed, and talked it over with many close friends. I really feel like this is an opportunity that I cannot pass up. We are making the trip with Mission of Hope, an organization that has worked for over 10 years in Haiti giving orphans a home, spreading the gospel and providing food, medicine and education for poor Haitians. The dates of the trip are ________________. The total cost of the trip is $__________. I am writing to you to ask for your financial support. Anything you are able to give would be helpful! If you are unable to give at this time, I completely understand! I truly covet your prayers as I begin to plan for this mission trip. As you can imagine, raising support is sometimes difficult, but I know that if it is the Lord’s will that I make this trip, then He will provide. While in Haiti, I will have the opportunity to: • • • •

Work in an orphanage that houses almost 60 children. Work on construction teams Spend time ministering to children living in a number of orphanages Share Jesus with a country that has very little

If you are able to help, please send in your check, payable to ______________________, by (DATE)_____________. To learn more about the mission and its ministry, please visit its web site at www.mohhaiti.org. My desire is to allow God to use me to impact others for Him, and to allow Him to change me at the same time. Please continue to pray for me as these plans fall into place. Love…………….
