Greetings from SBS and Friends Manchester England to the Conference in Spello Italy

‘To Dare is to Hope’ It is almost 31 years since Mr Adrian Bianchi performed the first Bowel Lengthening surgery on Louise Winstanley at Pendlebury Hospital Salford, England.

Mr Adrian Bianchi

He was attempting to find a better way to deal with the problem of mal-absorption associated with Short Bowel Syndrome. Adrian often referred to Louise as his ‘Little Guinea-Pig’.

The Unit at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital has two Specialist Nurses... Affectionately known as ‘The Two Jane's. They work in the Unit and also go out to support families with Home PN, Medication and other medical issues.

A child receiving treatment on the Unit

In February 2008, my Granddaughter Dannielle was born with an atresia and only 10cm of short bowel. She had surgery to connect the short bowel to the large bowel and she survived! She then spent the next 12 months in hospital and eventually was allowed home on Parenteral Nutrition. Like most people we knew nothing about this condition. We struggled to find information and had no idea what the future would hold for Dannielle. Then one day we read an article in the news paper and everything changed!

Mr Morabito had lengthened Scott’s bowel and now he was independent of PN and eating normally.

In November 2010, Dannielle weighed just under 8kg. She now had 18cm of small bowel. She drank water but was not interested in eating at all. We consulted Mr Morabito and in January 2011 she had bowel lengthening surgery she now has 50cm small bowel. Following surgery Mr Morabito asked me if I would be willing to help him to organise the Short Bowel Charity. Naturally I agreed and so Short Bowel Survivor and Friends was started on 8th June 2011.

Dannielle is much healthier weighing14kg. She eats a wide variety of foods thanks to Mr Morabito and the multi-disciplinary (PABRRU) team at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. She attends school full-time and is making good progress.
