COMBINING AESTHETICS WITH FUNCTIONALITY TO DELIVER LONG-LASTING PERFORMANCE

UNDERSTANDABLY POPULAR THERE IS NO DENYING THAT A PERFECTLY MANICURED LAWN CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL THING, HELPING TO LEND A SENSE OF CALMNESS AND BEAUTY TO ANY OUTDOOR SPACE. However, accomplishing excellence with natural grass is an expensive, time-consuming and often frustrating pastime involving high maintenance and a constant battle against the elements. Therefore, at Bonar Yarns, we strive to ease the burden associated with achieving perfection.

Synthetic turf was originally designed for use in sport, and is now firmly established as a viable alternative to natural turf for football, hockey, rugby, tennis and several others. It should come as no surprise, however, that it has found equal popularity in the non-sport world. Gardens, rooftops, shop floors, pet areas, playgrounds, recreational or commercial landscaping and areas where grass cannot grow naturally are just a few examples of where synthetic turf has proven to be a worthy substitute for grass. The know-how and experience that goes into producing the top-quality fibres from Bonar Yarns ensures an impressive return on investment combined with outstanding technical service – making our synthetic yarn the perfect choice.

WHY CHOOSE BONAR YARNS? The overall effectiveness of synthetic turf in a non-sport application depends on several aspects: the quality of the manufacturing process, the skill of the installer, the right choice of product for that particular purpose. But at the heart of it all is the fibre that makes up each individual blade of grass – which is where Bonar Yarns comes in. Our motto says it all: “Greatness is in the detail”.

Ever since the early days of synthetic turf, back in the 1960s, we at Bonar Yarns have been developing, producing and guaranteeing our yarns for the heaviest use, toughest climatic conditions and myriad applications. At our two factories, in Dundee and Abu Dhabi, we use the highest-grade raw materials to manufacture durable and natural-looking fibres in a wide range of colour, shape and thickness options. In addition to ensuring sustainable quality, our technical team is also continually pushing back the boundaries of innovation to design yarns for use in extreme climates, for example, or indoors where flammability and fire safety is an issue.

INDUSTRY-LEADING INNOVATION At Bonar Yarns we have always been at the forefront of innovation, and we have played an influential role in shaping the industry as it is today. Our customers often ask us to produce to their specific requirements, so we do. But our in-house Research and Development team has also made its own inventive mark on our range of products to create numerous successful innovations. Take our CoolGrass® technology, for instance. In warm climates an artificial lawn may look great and make perfect sense from a maintenance perspective, but the fibres can become hot – and hence uncomfortable – under bare feet. By refining our manufacturing technique and introducing a special additive, we have developed a yarn that keeps the temperature down for greater comfort. This product is an ideal solution if our fibres are to be installed in countries with hot summers.

FOCUS ON QUALITY We carefully select the very best suppliers of polymer and master batch (colour) to guarantee durable yet natural-feel fibres. In fact, we are so confident of our yarn quality that we provide a warranty for resilience and softness. To us, colour fastness and stability is another requirement where no compromise is possible: we do not cut corners on UV inhibitors since it is essential that our fibres are optimally protected against fade, brittleness and degradation. Moreover, we stopped using lead or heavy metals many, many years ago. This gives extra peace of mind, both to the manufacturers who choose to work with Bonar Yarns and to their customers whose synthetic turf solutions are made from our fibres. Through our stringent quality control measures every single hour (ISO9001:2008) and our ongoing internal audit process, we ensure that only the very best yarns leave our two factories. On the rare occasion that a batch falls below our high standards, it is recycled internally to minimise our material waste.

STRIVING FOR PRODUCTION PERFECTION To control production, you need to measure what you do. At Bonar Yarns, we are continually measuring: we measure our raw material quality, our finished quality, our output and our wastage, to name but a few. Our efficiency is constantly improving as we continually invest in increasing the skills of our employees, in updating our equipment and in further optimising our processes. Our approach delivers a consistently high-performance range of both monofilament yarns (each blade is formed by an individual fibre) and fibrillated yarns (tape that divides to create the effect of several blades) in a variety of thicknesses, colours and softnesses.

WE STRIVE FOR PRODUCTION PERFECTION TO ENSURE THERE IS NO COMPROMISE ON THE END RESULT. AFTER ALL, “GREATNESS IS IN THE DETAIL”.

GLOBAL AVAILABILITY As the number of non-sport applications for synthetic turf continues to grow, so too does the need to design something different and unique in line with customer preferences. Thanks to our network of Bonar Yarns warehouse facilities offering global distribution, we can supply many alternative colours, shapes and yarn thicknesses, from stock. This ensures a swift response to newly placed orders.

IN ADDITION TO OUR CORE RANGE OF YARNS AVAILABLE, WE CAN ALSO PRODUCE FIBRES ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS. ALL WE ASK FOR IS GOOD FORECASTING, AND OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE TEAM TAKES CARE OF THE REST.

EXTENSIVE CHOICE OF YARNS OUR EXTENSIVE RANGE OF YARNS INCLUDES SEVERAL SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FIBRES THAT COMBINE AESTHETICS AND SOFTNESS WITH DURABILITY AND VERSATILITY.

TEXTURE

A dual-colour PE straight monofilament where each blade is an individual fibre. This is available in different thicknesses and shapes, thereby giving designers a multitude of options to create the perfect surface for each particular need. MN RelaxTM is soft to the touch, resilient and very durable.

TWIST

A dual-colour PE straight monofilament combined with a texturised (curly) yarn which acts as support fibre to add bulk and enhance appearance. The choice of green shades mixed with a natural or ‘dead grass’-coloured support yarn allows for various design options. MX RelaxTM is soft yet tough and very resilient, delivering exceptional performance over a long period of time.

GUARANTEED PERFORMANCE THANKS TO OUR STRINGENT QUALITY CHECKS AND QUALITY CONTROL PROCESSES, IT IS VERY RARE THAT CLAIMS ARE MADE UNDER THE WARRANTY WE PROVIDE. BUT IN THE EVENT THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE, THE BONAR YARNS GUARANTEE FULLY COVERS THE DUTY OF THE YARN. IN PARTICULAR, WE GUARANTEE AGAINST UV AND AGAINST THE USE OF HEAVY METALS OR OTHER HARMFUL SUBSTANCES IN OUR PRODUCTS. But that’s not all. We also advise our customers on issues that may occur due to local conditions, such as excessive heat or cold, unprofessional installation, poor maintenance or incorrect usage. In that sense, our technical support provides you with an extra guarantee of performance.

DISPELLING THE MYTH ABOUT NATURAL GRASS A common belief is that natural grass is more eco-friendly than synthetic fibres. However, there is extensive research that dispels this myth. On closer consideration, it’s fairly logical: to grow, natural turf requires water (which is a scarce or expensive resource in many parts of the world) and nourishment (more often than not chemicals are used, which could leach into the water table). It subsequently needs managing – mowing involves manual labour, usually combined with fuel or electricity, and produces cuttings which must be disposed of. In contrast, once installed, synthetic turf is very low-maintenance and requires no chemicals or water. Moreover, not only is synthetic turf made from renewable, recovered and recycled materials, but it can also be recycled at the end of its useful life. In some parts of the world, this environmental aspect has led to grants being provided to householders who choose synthetic turf over natural grass.
