Welcome to our region This fast-growing region is a natural for meetings, conferences and events. We’ve got all the space you need plus a team of event specialists ready to help you make it happen.

Message from the Executive Director 4

Welcome to the tenth edition of the Planners Guide. Our region is a natural for events. Our facilities span urban, coastal and country locations and offer scale and capacity you might not expect in a regional destination. Be surprised! Remember, regional does NOT mean small; this region regularly caters for conferences and events of 1,500-plus delegates, promising an experience like no other. The region boasts an array of accommodation, right for every budget from 4.5-star resorts to high quality budget accommodation properties set in idyllic locations. We offer facilities perfect for large, small or mid-sized events, meetings or conferences. It’s all about choosing the right venue for your group. Proximity to Melbourne and easy access have always made our region an attractive conference destination. The completion of the Geelong Ring Road has put us even closer. Our natural assets – think: beaches, rainforests and stunning scenery – are seductive. But nothing is as enticing as the array of team-building and group activities on offer right across the region. Business Events Geelong works in partnership with regional tourism boards, local and state governments, Business Events Victoria, the Victorian Tourism Industry Council and Melbourne Convention Bureau. Together we ensure that our innovative regional events industry continues to deliver outstanding service to the MICE industry.

Business Events Geelong provides extensive resources to assist event planners in coordinating and creating memorable events. In 2013 we launched our new website. It features clever, user-friendly navigation and search tools designed specifically to help planners access regional information and find the most suitable venue, product or service for their event. The website offers a Request for Proposal option whereby we work with our industry partners to gather quotes and information on your behalf. Or you can simply click through to access the venues direct. Business Events Geelong is the best-resourced regional convention bureau in Victoria and our work has been awarded many times by the tourism and events industries, achieving national Hall of Fame status with MEA and the Victorian Tourism Awards. I am confident that within the pages of our Planners Guide 2014-15 you will find solutions to any queries you may have about placing a business event in Victoria’s best-equipped region: Greater Geelong, The Bellarine and Great Ocean Road.

Greater Geelong, The Bellarine and the Great Ocean Road is a region steeped in breath-taking beaches, inspiring encounters with nature and exciting opportunities for adventure that will add colour and movement to any conference or event.

Just south of Geelong, the Surf Coast spans the stunning shoreline from Torquay to Anglesea and on to Lorne. Striking sea cliffs watch over golden beaches and famous surf breaks, like Bells Beach – this surfing Mecca is home to the world’s longest running surf event, the Rip Curl Pro. Torquay is where the Great Ocean Road begins its epic coast-hugging journey through rainforests and national parks.

Geelong is one of Australia’s premier cities and Victoria’s largest regional centre. Its beautiful waterfront and reputation as the gateway to the Great Ocean Road make it a crowd-pleasing destination. Within easy walking distance, discover heritage streetscapes, galleries, cultural hubs and shopping plazas, and a myriad of thrilling activities centred on the waterfront.

The region is a giant adventure playground where teams can dare to take-on the extreme or seek quietude in the closeness of nature. Step it up with sea kayaking and mountain biking, or kick back amongst the ancient tall timber and fauna-filled forests.

North of the city, halfway between Melbourne and Geelong, Werribee and the City of Wyndham buzz with opportunities and must-do experiences. The Werribee Park Tourism Precinct and Point Cook Coastal Park beckon with a grand heritage mansion and the delights of the Werribee Open Range Zoo to explore. Drive 15 minutes south east from Geelong and find yourself surrounded by the charm of the Bellarine Peninsula and the villages of Queenscliff, Drysdale, Portarlington, St Leonards, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. This foodie heaven is underscored with a plethora of beach activities, boutique wineries and cultural experiences. It’s where the bay meets the river meets the ocean: boating, fishing, snorkelling, kayaking, surfing and swimming with dolphins are all on the cards.

The Otway Ranges’ crisp mountain air inspires clear thinking and hefty appetites. Cue the Otway Harvest Trail with winery tours, pick-your-ownberries sessions and meet-and-greets with local food artisans. Sample village life in Winchelsea, Bambra, Birregurra or Forrest, or go to town in Colac and Camperdown. Back on the southern coast, the road journeys through Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and on to Warrnambool taking you past the click-worthy Twelve Apostles, the tale-filled Shipwreck Coast and pretty seaside villages. Warrnambool is a conference destination in its own right with an exceptional range of venues and team building activities spanning from whale watching and horseriding on the beach, to golfing, kayaking, wildlife encounters and maritime heritage discovery. Things happen naturally in this region: great ideas, extraordinary events and superb conferences.

We are Geelong Geelong is entering a new economic era. There will be significant challenges, but huge opportunities, and we are united in our determination to maximise these opportunities.

Message from Mayor Darryn Lyons

Securing major investment is one of the keys to maintaining and increasing our regional prosperity, and at the same time developing new employment opportunities in a range of new industries.

We recognise that they are an effective mechanism, for attracting investment, stimulating innovation, sharing knowledge, research and expertise, promoting cultural exchange and supporting the community.

We are not sitting back and waiting for these opportunities to come to us.

These are the compelling reasons that drive us in our determination to support our tourism and business events services.

We are getting out there – nationally and internationally – and making sure we bring these investors to the Geelong region, where they will prosper, and we will prosper along with them. The City of Greater Geelong understands the key benefits that business events deliver to the region.

INnovative Geelong Thinkers, doers, makers, educators and experts come together on 21st century projects that are making the world stand up and pay attention. A who’s who of passionate people head up the research hubs, industry clusters and lobbying groups that make Geelong a hotspot for ideas.

Carbon Nexus is a $34m globally unique facility newly established at Deakin University in Waurn Ponds. It is the only place in the world where you will see a research carbon fibre pilot-scale line embedded in a university. Carbon Nexus provides unique opportunities in terms of innovation and learning. The facility will be training the scientists and engineers of the 21st century. Research at Carbon Nexus is informed by industry and focussed on four themes: • low cost carbon fibre • high performance carbon fibre • surface treatment and sizing of carbon fibre • composite materials. Carbon Nexus is set to attract the best experienced and early-career scientists from around the globe to develop world-first technologies designed to cut the cost, time and effort required to deliver high-value project outcomes to industry. Why carbon fibre? Five time stronger and fives times lighter than steel, carbon fibre is revolutionising design and manufacturing in aviation, automotive, aerospace, defence, medical and beyond. It has been called the “aluminium of the 21st century”. Carbon Nexus places Australia in a strong position for developing the next generation of carbon fibres. Its location in Geelong will provide exciting opportunities for the future of manufacturing in the region and is already attracting considerable international interest from industry, government and scientific sectors. Associate Professor Bronwyn Fox, Research Director Carbon Nexus, Deakin University Associate Professor Bronwyn Fox grew up in Geelong, attained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne and a doctorate in Engineering at Australian National University. Bronwyn was lured back to her home town via roles in research, lecturing and, from 2011, as an Associate Professor with Deakin’s Centre for Material and Fibre Innovation. Bronwyn leads the Carbon Nexus research team of 30 scientists and engineers focussing on carbon fibre and composites research, including carbon fibre manufacture, surface treatment of fibres, three-dimensional preforms for complex composite components, nanocomposites and more.

Dr Minoo Naebe, Research Fellow Carbon Nexus, Deakin University Dr Minoo Naebe is a Research Fellow in carbon fibres and composites with Carbon Nexus, having joined the Institute of Frontier Materials (IFM) in 2008. Minoo completed her undergraduate studies in Iran, relocating to Geelong to undertake PhD studies at Deakin University. Minoo’s research focuses on the structure-property relationship of carbon based nanoreinforced composites and most recently on developing novel functional and structural hierarchical composites for defence, aerospace and automotive applications. Minoo is thrilled to be involved at the forefront of carbon fibre development and to be undertaking research set to bring tangible outcomes to society. VCAMM (Victorian Centre for Advanced Materials Manufacturing) VCAMM is a founding partner in Carbon Nexus at Geelong. Formed in 2002, VCAMM is a not for profit organisation established to help industries evolve and develop new intellectual property so they can remain globally competitive in today’s challenging markets. VCAMM’s mission is to help Australian manufacturing businesses to develop new ideas, solve problems, find new markets and partners, and attract investment. VCAMM works with a consortium of universities and other research providers, including Deakin University in Geelong, to develop that intellectual property. VCAMM works on three levels: • strategic projects such as the Carbon Nexus facility at Deakin • directly with manufacturers developing new projects and intellectual property • i ncubating companies and supporting the incubation of their growth towards commercial success. For Carbon Nexus, VCAMM is providing business development and industry liaison services to assist in generating research projects. The organisation is an enthusiastic supporter of Geelong manufacturing initiatives and is working closely with regional manufacturers to define and maximise future opportunities. INnovative Geelong: What our industry leaders have to say…

The Geelong Manufacturing Council (GMC) has a vision to position Geelong as a leading dynamic, technologically advanced, internationally competitive, manufacturing centre in the 21st century.

Established in 2013, Enterprise Geelong is the economic development arm of the City of Greater Geelong charged with facilitating business investment in and throughout the region.

GMC members meet regularly to drive key themes of positioning, networking and lobbying; encouraging excellence; building industrial synergies; developing skills; and growing advanced technologies.

Enterprise Geelong builds on Geelong’s impressive history of economic development, supercharging resources and facilities, and taking them out into the world in a whole new way. The aim is for Geelong to maximise its economic potential.

Key initiatives and programs of GMC include the Engineering Network Geelong (ENG), a diverse group of 47 engineering companies working together to provide complete engineering solutions. The Geelong Manufacturing Excellence Program is designed to support manufacturing and related businesses through four streams: innovation acceleration, leadership, leadership alumni and network seminar series. As a partner organisation of GMC, Enterprise Connect provides free business reviews for eligible manufacturing, processing and support companies, and the GreenLight Project focuses on transitioning towards sustainable low waste thriving enterprises.

Geelong’s highly regarded, value-added industry is plugged into the broader global supply chain. We have the third highest number of scientists and technologists of any city in Australia and an incredible intellectual capital base. Our challenge is to build on that for the benefit of our citizens and industry. Geelong is well positioned to capitalise on global growth in the disability and health services sector, head offices of the TAC and NDIA already located here. We need to maximise opportunities in the 21st century industries such as carbon fibre and advanced materials, and biotechnology.

GMC works across the region’s manufacturing sector, which comprises 500 companies and some 14,000 employees, and accounts for 41% of regional employment.

Enterprise Geelong will be running programs into Asia, North America and Europe. Our local government and industry representatives will be engaging with businesses more and more globally.

Partnership are a core asset of the organisation; GMC partners closely with Deakin University, the Geelong Technology Precinct, the Victorian State Government, Enterprise Connect and many more.

Our strategy is to get out there and tell the world about the fantastic embedded advantages we have in this region.

David Peart, Executive Officer, Geelong Manufacturing Council With qualifications including a Commerce Degree, an Honours Degree in Economics, a Diploma with the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), David has led the advancement of GMC. Member numbers have grown, reach has extended, and influence has strengthened. David’s background spans more than 20 years advocating for regional industry, investment and employment. Experience includes participation in lobbying delegations to Canberra and appearing before government and parliamentary enquiries. At GMC, David has built an active network, creating close relationships with people who make a difference to regional industry. www.geelongmanufacturingcouncil.com.au

Greater Geelong & The Bellarine Dynamic Greater Geelong pulses to a beat all on its own. As Victoria’s largest regional city, Geelong’s vein of commerce and heritage runs deep. And it’s tempered with a fun-loving alter ego that delights in everything bayside, beachy, active and natural.

Including Queenscliff & Wyndham 20

This region is a perfect blend of work and play, ideas and imagination, purpose-built facilities and awesome natural landscapes. It’s your ultimate conferencing destination. Conferencing injects some $50+ million annually into the regional market. It’s big business and a crucial part of both the economy and the lifestyle. Several conference and event venues can cater for more than 1000 delegates with a myriad of high-quality accommodation within close proximity. Werribee is the region’s surprise package, positioned less than 30 minutes from Melbourne and offering a full-featured escape-from-the-city experience supported by remarkable local attractions. Werribee and the City of Wyndham are blessed with open space, diversity and nature’s riches. Go wild with a bus safari through the Werribee Open Range Zoo or unite for a group stride or cycle along a riverside nature trail. A little further along the highway, Geelong’s CBD and glittering waterfront boast strong conference capability and appealing venues within walking distance of leisure, cultural, commercial, dining and retail precincts. Around every corner there’s something to inspire delegates: sail or cruise the sparkling waters of Corio Bay, let fly in a chopper, explore our rich wool heritage, tour a bunch of wineries or tee-off with a team building round of golf.

Activities on offer are as diverse as your delegates’ tastes. They can take a seat for a live show in an outstanding performance space or picnic on the lawns of a true 21st century garden at the Geelong Botanic Gardens. They can ride a beautifully restored carousel with all the bells and whistles, take a stroll on a genuine semicircle promenade or relax into a day of charter fishing or spa pampering. Greater Geelong is thriving as a leader in innovation and knowledge, education and research. It’s a mecca for researchers, creatives, big thinkers, and movers and shakers. Business incubators, research hubs, universities and industry collaborations are flourishing. A collection of world-leading speakers and commentators are based here and available to inspire your conference or meeting. Just a short drive from Geelong is The Bellarine. This natural beauty is fun and full of energy. It’s no wonder that The Bellarine has evolved into a premium conference and event destination. It offers superb venues and stand-out incentive activities, all wrapped in a soul-pleasing blanket of fresh sea air, beach-side charm and rural allure. You can walk out of your conference room and into a striking coastal environment with all the trimmings.

Great Ocean Road The Great Ocean Road boasts a remarkable range of conference and accommodation facilities… and it’s closer than you think.

Including Warrnambool

The Great Ocean Road is much more than one of the world’s most breathtaking scenic drives. It’s a closer-than-you-think region of contrasts, superb natural beauty, daredevil adventure and world-class conference facilities.

The resort town of Lorne is one of Victoria’s most famous destinations for conferences, meetings and events. Accommodation can cater for up to 1,000 delegates, who will revel in the magical mix of natural beauty and sophisticated conference, resort and holiday infrastructure.

Warning: this region may contain traces of awesome: national parks, ocean panoramas, beaches, more beaches, wildlife encounters and brilliant landscapes that deliver a totally unforgettable and authentic delegate experience.

Lorne is on the one hand cosmopolitan and energising and, on the other, laid-back and restorative. From shopping to day spas, from surfing to sunning, from sidewalk cafes to fine dining restaurants, it’s a people-pleaser, through and through.

The Great Ocean Road begins at Torquay, a modern-day surfing mecca renowned as the birthplace of Aussie surfing culture. With the completion of the Geelong Ring Road, Torquay is now just over an hour’s drive from Melbourne’s CBD and Melbourne Airport, and a little over 30 minutes from Avalon Airport. Torquay and the Surf Coast host impressive 4.5 star state-of-the-art conference facilities that fuse premium service with stunning ocean views and a plethora of on-site and off-site leisure activities. The world-famous Rip Curl Pro surfing competition is held at Bells Beach during Easter each year. Surfing passion is expressed everywhere from the flourishing surf clothing industry and its popular factory outlets to a museum dedicated to all things surfing. Enrol your team for a group learn-to-surf class, a horse-riding adventure or a tour of waterfalls and wildlife. For the more daring at heart, there’s skydiving, tiger moth aerobatic flights, paragliding, kayaking and kite surfing.

44

Right across the Great Ocean Road region, leading team building and incentive activity providers unite with the ingenuity of local operators to deliver novel, awe-inducing delegate experiences and incentives. Imagine your group driving a fleet of prestige sports cars along the Great Ocean Road or being inspired by one of Australia’s most successful long distance runners before heading off into the Great Otway National Park for a group trail run. Cape Otway is a natural adventure precinct in its own right. Horses are being recognised internationally for their capacity to inspire individuals and groups to higher levels of personal awareness and fulfilment, including team and leadership development. There is no riding, and experience with horses is not required.

We are IGBY – A collective of vibrant, motivated and creative souls who love to bring your vision to life. Whatever the occasion, we have the expertise and a bespoke design solution that will fulfil your needs; giving you nothing less than an incredible event.

We constantly transmit information about ourselves through our physiology, body language, thoughts, and feelings. Horses respond to our unique ‘frequency’ and show us aspects of ourselves we don’t see. They give us feedback without filters – their responses are unique, undeniable, immediate, and honest. During your interaction with the horses, the human facilitators observe the horses’ responses, and through a specific coaching approach, help you make your desired changes.

From a small soiree for special clients to corporate marquee at the races, meetings and conferences, product launches and cocktail parties or even the grandest of gala dinners; IGBY has got it covered.

Come and participate in powerful action learning experiences with horses and nature for professional and personal development. The immediacy of the learning will help you to quickly internalise new insights, skills, and behaviours. Our approach is grounded in solid business principles, knowledge of human behaviour, emotional intelligence, quantum physics, neurobiology, and understanding of team dynamics. Situated in the picturesque valley of Spring Creek in Torquay, all activities are conducted outdoors. Suitable for all levels of fitness, and levels of confidence around horses. Bookings required.

58

Our all-in-one process will capture the collective thoughts and images of the participants through interviews and a photo-shoot. The applications are endless!

Working with you every step of the way to create an event that represents your vision with style and sophistication, the team at IGBY will look after everything from concept through to completion. IGBY can offer you inspiration, creativity and practical advice, along with the best network of leading suppliers in the region, resulting in a flawless event that will ‘WOW’ your guests and be enjoyed by all.

Cape Otway Lightstation

1

Cape Otway Lightstation is the most significant lighthouse in Australia. The light, which has been in continuous operation since 1848, is perched on towering sea cliffs where Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean collide.
