Undergraduates Get a head start on your career. If you’re currently at university, then spending time on a placement or internship with us will help you get a better understanding of the areas that inspire you the most. You’ll be able to develop your technical skills and gain valuable experience to add to your CV. You’ll also be making important contacts in the industry and if you do well and like what we do, you’ll be able to fasttrack through part of the graduate process later on. If you’re interested in working for Atkins in the future we would highly recommend working for us first as an intern before applying for our Graduate Development Programme.  You will be paired with a more experienced person appropriate to your skillset, and involved as much as possible in real life issues so that you have the opportunity to find out firsthand how it feels to work in a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy. Internships are available for all degree years, but please check job descriptions for individual business requirements. A summer internship could last anywhere from 8-12 weeks, just enough time to give you an insight into working life, and life at Atkins.

How do I apply and what is the process? Our undergraduate roles typically go live in September and you can search and apply via our careers website. Our ‘graduate role finder’ or vacancy matrix will help you consider the sectors you will be eligible for. Consider the options carefully as you’ll only be able to make one application. When you’ve submitted your online application we’ll review your details and get in touch to advise you of the next step. If you’ve been shortlisted, your application will then be reviewed by the hiring manager and you could be invited to interview. It’s a short process, so make sure you give as much detail as you can in your initial application.

“The Middle East is a great place for fresh graduates to kick-off their careers due to the vast opportunities and range of projects available. This region is currently experiencing massive infrastructure development at a substantial growth rate.”

Getting started… To find out if we’re right for each other we’ve designed a process that is easy to follow and helps you show us your best and learn more about ours. It will be challenging at times and you’ll need to plan your time to help you give it your all. We’re on hand to guide you through.

Online application form

Online psychometric tests

Telephone screening interview

Technical interview

Our online application form is the first stage of the selection process. You tell us about your academic achievements, work experience, personal details, and your skills and competencies, relevant to some of the non-technical skills we are looking for in our graduates in the Middle East.

The second stage of our selection process would involve you completing our online numerical and inductive reasoning assessments. All our graduates are being recruited for technical roles and are required to have a certain level of numeracy skills and have the ability to demonstrate a logical approach to projects and tasks.

The final stage of our selection process is a technical interview with the hiring manager(s). This will be conducted face-to-face if you are in the same country, alternatively video conference, Skype or telephone will be used.

This is the time to sell yourself and to stand out from the others…. as your application will now be reviewed by our team of specialist recruiters.

Although the assessments will be expected to be taken in English, the exception to this will be for GCC Nationals, who will have the option to conduct the assessments in Arabic.

The telephone screening interview helps us to understand why you want to work for Atkins (and move to the Middle East for people who don’t live locally). We will discuss any questions we have after reading your application form, identify the business areas and office locations you would like to be considered for, and assess some of the non-technical skills we are looking for in our graduates. It also gives you an opportunity to ask us questions.

“Every chance that I have identified to push the boundaries of my personal development has been supported by the business.”

The interview will focus on your education and experience but more importantly the technical knowledge you have developed at university that is transferable to the role you are being interviewed for.

Property Vibrant spaces and places. Our story We have a long and remarkable track record of designing and delivering property projects in the Middle East, including the Burj Al Arab – one of Dubai’s most celebrated symbols. Other project include Almas Tower at the heart of in Dubai’s Jumeirah Lakes Towers; the Bahrain World Trade Centre; and the award winning Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi.

What really excites us, though, is the work which we’re going to be making a reality over the next few years and beyond – projects such as the Dubai Opera House, Al Habtoor Residences, Suites in the Skai and Prince Sultan Cultural Centre near Jeddah. These are part of our continuing journey to make an important contribution to the world around us – it’s about improving people’s lives and making the Middle East more sustainable, in every sense of the word.

Our partnerships with our visionary clients flow into how we operate as a team – we’re inclusive and thoughtful in our decision making and in our multidisciplinary approach to design. This draws on a vast range of skillsets covering everything from master-planning and architecture to the full range of engineering disciplines.

To bring all this together means we’ve got to collaborate and work really closely as one team from start to finish. It demands a set of behaviours and a willingness to co-operate, to build networks and to understand the bigger picture, which will play a crucial role in your development as a graduate, and a member of our property team.

“Working on site on a major building project was really beneficial for me as I got the chance to see the wider picture and how the site operations business works within Atkins. It gave me the knowledge and understanding of health and safety procedures, contractual documents, procurement and construction details.”

Infrastructure The urban backbone. Our story We’re trusted to design and deliver some of the most critical infrastructure projects around the world – by which we mean the roads, bridges and utilities without which our cities and towns couldn’t function.

It’s fair to say that our infrastructure projects tend to be unsung heroes – they don’t have the glamour and prestige associated with major property developments, or the dynamic impact of a metro network. Nevertheless, they are the lifeblood of our urban environments. Our infrastructure team in the Middle East is spread across the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman. More than half of these colleagues are regularly based at construction sites, working to ensure our clients’ designs are delivered to a high standard by the contractor, while ensuring health and safety regulations are enforced and adhered to at all times.

Another project is the masterplanning for Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, a 417 sq km economic hub linked to the Khalifa Port. This is playing a vital role in supporting the long term economic diversification of the emirate.

Looking forward, the Middle East will continue to offer fantastic infrastructure opportunities. The region’s governments have ambitious visions for growth and continued investment in world-class infrastructure is essential. We’re looking forward to rising to the challenge!

A good example of how our infrastructure projects are improving the daily lives of millions of people is our local roads and drainage contract in Doha, Qatar. This involves delivering upgrades across around a quarter of the city!

“Atkins invests in its employees through training, both on the job and off. There are numerous opportunities to work on short assignments and training is available for everything from language to software.”

Rail Revolutionising transportation to create a sustainable environment. Our story Our rail activities in the Middle East are relatively new compared to property and infrastructure – we first formed a regional rail team in 2006 for Dubai Metro, the region’s first state-of-the-art mass transit system. Within months we had a team of 400 people in Dubai supported by 1,000 people across the world, and our rail team hasn’t looked back since!

Dubai Metro has made a transformational impact, not only in Dubai but across the region – it has proven the demand for high quality public transport and thanks to its overwhelming success there is now unprecedented investment in major metro projects across the Middle East. Today, we’re regarded as the region’s pre-eminent metro designer. Our work includes major packages of works to support the design and delivery of Riyadh Metro and Doha Metro, working alongside contractor consortiums.

David Linral engineering [Rail] Structu

These are deeply complex projects and our role typically includes providing multidisciplinary services including station planning, architecture, tunnel design and track alignment. Our clients trust Atkins to deliver. We’ve continually built on our experience so that for every job we’re making improvements and taking advantage of lessons learnt.

What’s more, our regional rail team is part of a network of 3,000 Atkins rail experts across the world. This breadth of knowledge and international expertise enables us to help our graduates to become leaders in their respective fields, so there’s no better time to join our rail team.

“The team I am in (structures for Rail) is brilliant, I am always learning from my senior engineers! And the most important thing? They never get tired of me asking questions! all the support within my reach is definitely what excites me about working with Atkins!”
