Change, the Only Constant: Embracing Change in our Life

D

o you honor change in your life as a threat or an opportunity? Most people love the idea of being able to change; it enthralls imagination and releases an outpouring of energy that pushes them forward yet some people find change challenging.

When someone has become already contented with the way things work, they naturally find it hard to embrace something different. Change is difficult, really difficult. That is why most people like to stay in their comfort zone and they are hostile to change. More than any other, one single attribute separates people in this world: ATTITUDE.

According to Tom Mendoza of NetApp, attitude is critical when it comes to embracing change. Great people are always looking for ways to change- to grow. We only have two routes in life; you are either getting better or getting worse: if you are staying the same, you are getting worse. Here is how to embrace change in your life and career…

1

Don’t Look Back

5

Life is a persistent teacher but we have to realize that we should not dwell on the past other than noting lessons learned. We should focus and put our energy into the present.

2

So Ask Yourself, “What’s Next?” It opens you to a new world of possibilities. You begin to think bigger. You begin to ask yourself what is possible, if only you could change yourself. When you ask yourself what is next, embracing change has to be part of that, or it’s a waste of time. What is the point of making goals if it doesn’t make you get better, or change for something for the better?

3

You must be Bold When you set your goals, you have to dream big. Then you have to believe in the goal and in your ability to achieve that goal. If you don’t believe, you don’t stretch, and you don’t set your aim at aggressively bold goal, you’ve no chance to reach them. You need to have the attitude to allow yourself to overcome the fear of change.

4

Don’t be Scared Not taking risk is, in itself, a risk. Aging well as a person or as a company is based on two things: curiosity and desire to do better.

6

What are you Getting Better at? When we realize that we have to answer, “What are we getting better at?” it begins to change our perception of the problem – we begin to focus on the bigger purpose.

Start embracing change today. Start living! Once you get started, you will find change is full of amazing opportunities.

Hire Motivated People When we hire, one of the key things we check is their attitude. Will they fit into our culture of embracing change? And that comes about by embracing change and by focusing on what’s next.

thank you! - BFF

I

n last year’s edition, we introduced to you the BrightFuture Foundation (BFF), an organization in the US that exists solely to support MFBP, a tuition-free preschool in Mindanao, in the Southern Philippines. Fred Schlottmann in New York, a former shipping industry executive, runs BrightFuture, without compensation to ensure that the highest possible share of the donations is used for the school, using his industry contacts and experience to manage it, and to conduct fund raising. MFBP offers free English and basic academics to over 200 children from the lowest-income families in the area. The paid staff consists of four qualified and experienced teachers, one administrator, and one caretaker. In addition, as of the current school year, there are two registered nurses conducting classes in family planning for the students’ mothers. Fred visits the school twice every year, to see about things in general, and to attend graduation ceremonies conducted in late March of every year, prior to the Philippines summer holiday. “Thanks to organizations and people like the Combined Logistics Networks, its management and its members, the school is now in its seventh year and is on track to graduate student number 800 in March of 2015”, stated by Fred. BrightFuture firmly believes that there is no bigger positive impact on a child’s future than an early education which includes not only the basics in the modern global language, but also exposure to an academic environment, easing their way into public school and increasing their chances of success.

here is no question that containerized ocean freight is at the heart of the majority of 21st century global supply chain ecosystems. However, infrastructure, regulatory and operational challenges both within and outside the port frequently result in congestion problems that adversely impact cross-border and multi-modal trade flows, causing delays and additional costs for all the supply chain stake holders. The container shipping industry has continued to develop and expand across multiple dimensions – including traffic volumes, technologies, vessel design, container handling equipment and scale of operations. Today, over 90% of all global trade travels on the water - the majority in containers - so any obstacle or development that impede the timely and cost effective movement of millions and millions of containers could have a profound effect on the health of the world’s economies. Container port infrastructure is therefore an essential and critical component that empowers and enables global supply chain ecosystems. Therefore, in the context of the Container Port – above and beyond pure capacity within the port, the network connectivity and overall throughput efficiency are equally important as critical enablers of the supply chain.
