INTRODUCTION The third meeting of the focal points appointed by the Governments of the signatory countries of the Declaration on the Application of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Lima on 30 and 31 October 2013. Prior to the meeting, a training workshop on the implementation of principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held (28 and 29 October 2013) as well as the third meeting of the working groups established under the Plan of Action to 2014 (29 October 2013). The purpose of this document is to provide delegations with useful background information to facilitate their participation at these meetings. The meeting coordinators will be pleased to answer any questions you may have concerning the logistics or organization of the event whether before or during the meeting.

1. Basic information on Peru Location Peru, whose official name is Republic of Peru, is located at the western tip of South America. With a surface area of 1,285,215.6 km and an estimated 29 million inhabitants, Peru is the twentieth largest country in the world in terms of surface area and the thirty-ninth in terms of population. Peru shares borders with five other South American countries and its maritime dominion extends for 200 nautical miles. Climate Unlike other countries close to the equator, Peru is not exclusively tropical but has a variety of climates. Lima has a very particular climate, with practically no precipitation and warm temperatures averaging 19°C over the year.

Useful information for visitors

Local currency Nuevo sol (S/.)

The currency unit is the nuevo sol (plural nuevos soles). Peru maintains a floating exchange rate with daily variations. The rate of exchange against the dollar for August 2013 was approximately S/ 2.8. There are no restrictions on currency exchange in Peru. Money may be exchanged in hotels, banks and authorized bureaux de change. Normal banking hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Electricity

220 volts (60 cycles), but most hotels have 110-volt (60 cycle) connections or transformers.

Airport tax

Airport tax for both domestic and international flights is included in the ticket price.

Tipping

A percentage service charge is added to hotel bills. In restaurants, general sales tax (IGV) is added automatically by law. It is not usual to tip taxi drivers.

Taxis/remises

Many taxis are not attached to firms or agencies and in general do not use meters. Visitors are therefore advised to use the services of agencies authorized by hotels and airports.

2. Coordination of the meeting The meeting is being organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Government of Peru through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Requests for reservations should be addressed directly to the hotel by 11 October 2013. After that date, the hotel reserves the right to change the rate and cannot guarantee that rooms will be available. Kindly use the form on page 6 to request your reservation. Delegates are responsible for their own reservations. It is advisable to check that the hotel has processed your reservation and to request a reservation number or confirmation code. A credit card number is required in order to make a reservation. Hotels in Peru apply a no-show policy. In the case of the Sheraton hotel, reservations may be cancelled up to 24 hours prior to expected arrival, and in the case of the Meliá hotel, up to 48 hours prior to expected arrival, failing which cardholders who do not show up will be charged for the first night as a penalty. All delegates must settle their own hotel bill at the end of their stay.

5. Entry requirements for Peru Citizens of most countries require only a valid passport, but not a visa, to enter Peru. For those nationalities that do require a visa, bearers of regular, diplomatic or official passports should get in touch with the nearest Peruvian embassy or consulate (www.rree.gob.pe).

6. Local transport Participants will be responsible for their own transport between the airport and the hotel.

7. Registration of participants An online registration system will be set up on the (www.cepal.org/rio20/principio10) with effect from 9 September 2013.

Registration of participants will take place from 8 a.m. on Wednesday 30 October in the hall of the meeting rooms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, located in the Carlos García Bedoya building. Participants will be given identification badges, which, for security purposes, must be shown at all meetings. Online registration does not exempt participants from the requirement to send an official note indicating the names of the head of delegation and accompanying members.

8. Opening session The opening session of the third Meeting of the Focal Points will commence at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, 30 October.

9. Internet The offices set aside for the meeting and the conference rooms will have Wi-Fi Internet access.

10. Languages The official language of the meeting will be Spanish. Simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided. 11. Medical service The Government of Peru will arrange for first aid services to be available in the event of an emergency at the venue of the meeting.

12. Documents This will be a paper-smart meeting. All the documents and official statements will be available for consultation and download at the website: www.cepal.org/rio20/principio10. Participants are advised to bring their laptop, tablet or other mobile device as there will only be a limited number of printed documents available.
