Keys to rooting garden mums ● Stick your cuttings as soon as they arrive - Hold in cooler at 35-40°F until sticking

● Use night interruption lighting in the propagation area - Need long days in prop, even when have over 12 hours of light - Night interruption is recommended • Long days of >16 hours will also work

● Smaller cells root faster and allow for transplant sooner - Better to grow the plant in the finished pot than a tray

● Be sure to stick in moist media and water in after stick

Keys to rooting garden mums ● Spray rooting hormone on cuttings the morning after stick - 200 ppm IBA as a spray - 1000 to 1500 ppm IBA as a pre-stick dip

● Use bottom heat to keep the media between 70-74 °F - 70-85°F air temperature

● Light Levels - 3500-4000 footcandles

● Fertilize during propagation two to three times a week - Start three days after stick or once callus starts - 165-200 ppm N • Little ammonia (14-4-14, 15-5-15)

- Can go up to 250-300 ppm if needed

Mist for propagation ● Mist (General guidelines) - Comparable to impatiens requirements • Days 1-3: 10 seconds every 5 minutes • Days 4-7: 10 seconds every 20 minutes - Callus starting to form • Days 8-15: 10 seconds every 30 minutes • May be able to cut off after 10 days

- Night mist • First three to four nights

- Enough to keep turgid

Mist for propagation ● The key is to back off mist as soon as possible - Less mist will speed rooting and reduce stretch

● More frequent mist needed early and even some night misting may be required - Goal is to have turgid cuttings in the morning

● Once callus/roots start, delay the start of mist in the morning until leaves just start to wilt ● Should be off mist completely by day 10 to 12

Growth Regulators ● Important to reduce initial stretch ● Sumagic® - Effective at 0.5 – 2ppm - Prefer to spray it early • Day after stick - 0.5-1ppm on all varieties

● B-Nine® - More expensive, but not as easy to overdose - 1000-5000 ppm as varieties dictate

• 2500 ppm is recommended rate • Use 1-2 times during prop - Day 4 and day 11

● Bonzi® - Not recommended

FLOREL™  with  Garden  Mums ● Florel™  plant  growth  regulator  is  not  required  to  grow  good   garden mums

● If you are planning to use Florel, - The first application should go on during propagation or as soon as the cuttings are turgid after transplant if starting with rooted cuttings - Applications should be repeated every two weeks - Applications should stop two weeks before blackcloth starts or approximately eight weeks before desired ship date - Typical rates vary from 350 to 500 ppm ● Not all varieties respond the same to Florel

Disease and Insects ● Fungicides - Botrytis control • Decree®, Medallion®, Daconil®, Chipco®

- Chrysanthemum White Rust (CWR) • Two sprays is best prevention • Daconil®, Heritage®

- Pythium • Subdue MAXX® /Hurricane®, Truban® /Banrot®

● Insecticides - Thrips - Aphids - Leafminers

Asters ● Slower to root than mums - Stick immediately after receiving

● Same day-length requirements ● May need slightly more mist ● Light levels are the same ● Temperatures are the same ● Fertilizers are the same

15

Asters ● PGR - May not be necessary in pinched program - B-Nine® 1000-3000ppm - No Sumagic ®

● Diseases - Powdery Mildew - Rust

● Insects - Aphids - Thrips

Keys for transplant ● Transplant as soon as the cuttings are rooted - No need to over root a mum or let them get root bound • Can lead to hard cuttings that will not take off well

- Leaving cuttings in the tray too long can stress the cuttings and cause pre mature budding

● Plant into moist media ● Plant deep enough to just cover the root ball ● Water in cuttings with liquid feed - At least 250 ppm N from a complete fertilizer - Ammonium based nitrogen source would also be good
