welcome The Good Growth Plan One Planet. Six Commitments. We have only one planet, and we’re using its resources 50 percent faster than it can take. We realize it’s time to think differently. The increasing strain we are placing on land, water and energy resources to grow food and, at the same time, to support booming urban populations is unprecedented. We need to improve crop efficiency, protect nature and help people in rural communities live better lives. Our future depends on finding solutions to these challenges. The Good Growth Plan is our commitment to making a measuring contribution by 2020. For more information, visit www.goodgrowthplan.com. The Good Growth Plan embraces six commitments: Make crops more efficient: Increase the average crop productivity by 20% without using more land, water or inputs Rescue more farmland: Improve the fertility of 10 million hectares of farmland Help biodiversity flourish: Enhance biodiversity on 5 million hectares of farmland Empower smallholders: Reach 20 million smallholders and enable them to increase productivity by 50% Help people stay safe: Train 20 million farm workers on labor safety, especially in developing countries Look after every worker: Strive for fair labor conditions throughout our entire supply chain network

Syngenta Grow More Vegetables Seed Grant Program The Syngenta Grow More Vegetables Seed Grant Program (SGMV) encourages and supports the establishment of gardens by schools and organizations. Through the grant, local garden leaders can be the catalyst for positive change by providing hands-on educational opportunities and enhancing healthy eating programs within the community. The success stories from our SGMV recipients are a good example of how we are bringing The Good Growth Plan to life in local communities by recognizing and supporting organizations that share our passion and commitment to sustainable agriculture. We are impressed by the thriving garden programs taking shape across North America. A garden is more than a source of fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. It can provide a reason to bring people out of their homes to forge new connections and strengthen community bonds. We are inspired by the efforts of garden program coordinators to educate students about healthy habits and improve the quality of life in their local community. To apply or learn more about the Syngenta Grow More Vegetables Seed Grant Program and its recipients, visit www.vegetables.syngenta-us.com.

Endosperm Classification

sh2

The type of endosperm in a sweet corn variety’s kernels is important because of the effect on planting seed and eating quality. Each variety must be judged on its own merits. su

Supersweet Jubilee Plus • A super-sweet version of the popular long-time favorite Jubilee • Tender deep kernels deliver extra sweetness and a smooth texture • Golden yellow color ears hold quality both on and off the plant

These are the original sweet corn types used by your grandparents. Today Su’s are known for superior seed quality, but generally lack appeal to the fresh market consumer. This is largely due to the lower sugar levels and rapid conversion of sugar to starch severely limiting the shelf-life of the su varieties. Contain 9 to 16% sugars.

Sugary (su) types

Sugary Enhanced (se) types

Se types have dramatically increased in popularity because of their sweetness, texture and consumer appeal. Se types also have an increased shelf-life compared to the su’s. It’s sweet taste and creamy texture is preferred by many growers.

sh2

Supersweet or Shrunken (sh2)

Popularity of sh2 varieties continues to increase due to the high sugar content and field holding ability. Sh2 varieties are very sweet, crunchy, and hold 4-6 days in the fridge. Sh2 varieties need complete isolation from all other types of corn. Contains 28 to 44% sugars.

TripleSweet TripleSweet® TripleSweet is a new class of sweet corn that has 75% sugary enhanced se kernels and 25% Supersweet sh2 kernels. TripleSweet varieties combine the exceptional tenderness and sweet corn flavor of se types with extra sweetness, extended shelf life and field holding ability. TripleSweet varieties need not be isolated from Se and Su types and tolerate cool soil conditions. Known for lasting sweetness even under drought stress, TripleSweet is ideal for today’s gardener.

TripleSweet Plus TripleSweet® Plus TripleSweet Plus is the next generation Triplesweet that has 60% sugary enhanced se kernels and 40% Supersweet sh2 kernels. TripleSweet Plus provides an exceptional eating experience due an improved corn flavor that comes from the tender and creamy se kernels and an extra “pop” of sweetness from the sh2 kernals. TripleSweet Plus still has an extended shelf life, great field holding ability, and exhibits lasting sweetness even under drought stress. TripleSweet Plus varieties need not be isolated from Se and Su types and tolerate cool soil conditions.

TOMATOES

BRASSICA

Tomatoes are America’s number one favorite vegetable. To get the most out of the garden, begin with tomatoes that span the season with early, mid and mid-late maturing varieties. Including a range of sweet, mild and robust fruit will provide a variety of flavors to the table.

Plant a cool season garden including vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussels sprouts in mid-summer to enjoy the harvest in the fall. Most cool season vegetables actually sweeten up in flavor after a light frost.

BEANS

PEPPERS

Not all beans are alike. Expand your culinary horizons with succession planting of different varieties every 2 to 3 weeks. Italian Flat beans, Yellow Wax, French Filet, or standard green beans; all offer different flavors and textures to enjoy thoughout the summer or preserved for later consumption.

Peppers are both colorful and flavorful. Go beyond the standard sweet bells and explore the world of Specialty Peppers - jalapeño, cubanelle, sweet banana and lamuyo types will appeal to those looking for an affordable entry into high-end cooking from the garden.
