A word from the President...

T

hank you to the board of directors for voting me in again as President of the AGBA. We have made many positive strides for the Galloway breed and I plan for that trend to continue. 2015 looks to be better than ever for our Galloway breeders. The cattle market is at record highs, while feed costs have been low. The demand for Galloway influenced females continues to be greater than the supply. We, as seedstock producers, need to ensure that interested parties find what they are looking for in numbers and most importantly, quality. Most will only “look” so long, then they will forget about Galloways as they can’t locate what they want. This year Shawn Schumacher asked me if I would write about “our” travels delivering Galloway breeding stock and visiting with fellow Galloway breeders. We put on around 8,500 to 10,000 miles per year (most with a trailer attached) delivering breeding stock to customers, dropping off bulls at stud, driving to cattle shows, or traveling to Galloway events. In 2014 we made stops in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington. We also made it to the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario. In 2013 we hit most of the same states as well as Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada. Thanks to all for the great hospitality, the gourmet meals, and the better than average hotel accommodations, it makes the traveling much more enjoyable. We really do get treated “like family”. In July we traveled to Ontario to attend the Canadian Galloway Association annual meeting. We toured five different herds utilizing Galloway genetics. The places we stopped were either seedstock producers, grass finishing producers, or both. Michelle and I have not gotten into all parts of the U.S. yet. Hopefully we will in the upcoming years. One of the things we really enjoy on our trips is visiting with cattle producers and seeing their operations first hand. Galloway cattle are very versatile and adaptable. They work well in many different types of management scenarios. We have seen the same bloodlines working in multiple herds, under different climates and grazing conditions. We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to get out and visit other herds, or cattle operations. It is a great way to get a finger on the pulse of how your breeding program is or isn’t doing for your customers. It is also a great way to find some new genetics. You never know where that gem of a bull calf or heifer is residing. Many breeders do take part in the Galloway shows, but they don’t bring their whole herd. Best wishes to all for a prosperous 2015. This is a premier lady. We are especially attracted to her longevity and fertility. Combined with a moderate frame, her large volume promotes easy fleshing and high butterfat milk. Soundness of feet, legs, teeth and udder are amply demonstrated. And, she is an own daughter of Clarences Dream. We are very grateful to Sarah Bowman for allowing us to own such a great cow. We are looking forward to seeing some ET offspring. (FOCUSING ON THE GALLOWAY CONTRIBUTION TO COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION)

AGBA has always been very supportive of our youth members and their activities with cattle. Involving youth with Galloway cattle and hoping they will continue with support of our Galloway breed as they become adults is always a goal. We are highlighting two young people that are at different places in location and stage in life but share the passion for Galloway cattle!

Go Galloway Youth Spotlight:

JACQUELINE COOK

J

acqueline (Greenwell) Cook was one of the first youth I met in the Galloway world. She was attending the 2010 National Western Stock Show in Denver with her family and their cattle. She offered to help and be a part of the Go Galloway youth group. Over the last 4 years, I have visited many times with Jacqueline as a member of our youth advisory group and thanks to connections through technology been able to keep up with her adventures in life and with her Galloway cattle. This is more of a “Where is she now?” youth highlight since Jacqueline is now 22 years old, married, a professional veterinary technician, moved from her home state of Washington and took her cows with her. DS- How did you get your start with Galloway cattle? How many years have you been involved with Galloways? JC- My Grandpa decided to raise Galloways before I was involved and then when his first crop of calves arrived and grew up I got involved. I was close to 14 years old so I have been involved with Galloway cattle for about 8 years. DS- Where do you live now and what took you there? JC- We moved from Washington to Baker City, Oregon for my husband, Tyler’s work. DS- How did your cattle adjust to the move? JC- They have done great. They are very happy and have even gained weight ranging around on this high elevation range grass. DS- What is the most beneficial/positive point about Galloway cattle for youth or anyone else? JC- I like something different and unique but also

with value. I kept and relocated mine because they are so nice and easy to manage. They are not jumpy and don’t try to kill me even with calves at their side. I am big on efficiency and not wasting resources like hay or pasture and the Galloways are great for being efficient. They are so adaptable. They were on Western Washington pastures with lots of grass and went right out to the sagebrush and bunch grass rangelands around here and did great. They started foraging right away. Galloways are so resistant to many genetic cattle problems in this area like the brisket disease complications from the high elevation. The Galloway outcross is so beneficial in this area. I see Galloways or cattle that have Galloway influence in pastures around this area as I am driving around. DS- What are your plans with Galloways? JC- Right now we live in town and we would like to get our own property to keep a small herd and keep our genetics. I have two pair and will learn to AI for now. I look forward to choosing a bull and building our herd. We were lucky to find property to put the cows and keep the horses. DS- What else keeps you busy? JC- I work as a veterinary technician at a large and small animal clinic. We also have 3 horses and I work with them. We are expecting a foal from one of our mares. It is great to see youth who keep their passion for cattle and choose to continue raising cattle in their lifestyle. I think it is always good to know there is another person out there who is passionate about Galloways and can share her own experiences about their benefits and adaptability.

HANK BLEGEN

ank Blegen has been around cattle his whole life. He attends school in Kindred, North Dakota. In his 9 years he has experienced all that being a contributing member of family involved in the cattle industry includes. He helps both his parents in numerous ways as they go about their successful business of raising, promoting and showing top notch registered Galloway cattle, while also building their commercial herd. From work and responsibilities around the home place and grazing lands to preparation and work to attend cattle shows and all they entail in far away cities, Hank contributes to the success of their operation. Hank recently sold one of his former show heifers, HB Princess, to the Wheelers in Oklahoma where she will contribute to their herd. His most recent show heifer, Snow Baby, is a Galloway cross that will be making her own contributions to the herd before too long. He will be choosing a new heifer to show in his county 4-H and youth livestock activities soon. Recently I asked Hank some questions about his cattle and his thoughts on Galloways. His responses are detailed below. DS- Do you have a favorite cow or bull? HB- Sweet Pea is my favorite cow. She is out in the herd now. And Moto Moto is my favorite bull. DS- Why are Galloway cattle a good choice, especially for young people? HB- Galloway are great beef cattle. You can turn them 14 • AGBA Directory

out and they will eat what is there. If you have an extra corn field [stubble or otherwise] they will eat it. They will eat corn, grass, and other types of feed and you won’t have to spend a bunch of money to buy lots of extra feed. DS- What is one thing you think is interesting or important to know about Galloway cattle? HB- The fact that they were introduced in the United States in 1857. They have been here a long time. [Hank recently completed an involved school project about Galloway cattle. He knows lots of facts and details about Galloways from his research and also personal experience.] DS- Do you have a favorite subject in school? HB- Obviously, math. Some kids favorite is recess but I like math. DS- Do you have other activities? HB- I like doing stuff on my ipad and I play football. DS- Do you have any plans or things you want to do in the future with your Galloways? HB- I want to make it [our family cattle business] grow better calves and I want to grow enough to have another favorite bull besides Moto Moto. If any of you attend Galloway events or visit the Blegen Galloway operation be sure to visit with Hank! With his growing knowledge and interest in continuing the family Galloway operation and his appreciation for math, he is one to keep an eye on building more interest in Galloway cattle.

Canadian Galloway Association Report 2014

H

ello fellow Galloway breeders and enthusiasts hope your families and operations’ have been thriving this past year. As it always seems, the weather has been up and down across our vast country again always challenging us in the agricultural indusrty. This past winter was longer then in recent years which made for a damper, cooler spring. It delayed a lot of the seeding and pushed back pasture turn out times as well as haying season. As farmers/producers we find a 28 • AGBA way to make doDirectory with what we are given. In Canada cattle prices have been on the incline since last January seeing most producers making a profit whether it be on calves, yearlings, cows or bulls. Prices for feeder calves are ranging from $1.70 - $3.90/lb at respective weights from 300-1000 lbs. Then market cows/bulls are running for $0.95 - $1.55/lb with bred cows at $1600 - $2500 and cow/calf pairs going for $1800 - $2350 of coarse all are commercial values. I personally sold all my marketable calves for $1100 each that averaged 400lbs, the most I have ever gotten in my time as a cattle producer. With the price of feed grains lower, it is easier for feedlots to feed cattle and make a profit too. Hopefully we are in for more good years ahead. Last march these higher prices came through in the few Galloway sales that were held (Alberta Plaid Galloway Sale & Genuine Genetics Galloway Sale) showing that there is some demand for Galloway cattle. As always some of are members in Eastern Canada have been busy exhibiting their cattle at various fall fairs like (Erin, Acton, Rockton) just to name a few as well as junior shows and trade shows. Also, are Western members participated in Bull/Female sales, The Canadian Bull Congress and are going

to be at Farm Fair International. All these members help educate and promote Galloway as there are always people asking what they are and what are their purpose/attributes. Membership in Canada is up from where it was a year ago with most of our newly added breeders residing in Alberta or Ontario. In addition to new members, we have also seen an increase in the number of cattle registered and transferred which seems to be a result of the associations newly adopted fee schedule for registrations and transfers. This year, we held our Annual Meeting in Stratford,ON that also consisted of farm tours to Brad & Colleen Card’s, Chris & Yvonne Schapp’s, Greg & Marie Blake’s, The Mclraith Families and Bev Burtis’s operations. A good time was had by all and the hospitality was as good as always. The CGA had made it a directive to try and update our image so we started off with designing a new website that is controlled more by the association to keep things more recent. Please feel free to check it out and let us know what you think as we have had it online since July (www.galloway.ca). The CGA board for this year consists of President- Brian A. Robertson (TRI-R-WAY Livestock), Vice- Marie Blake (Sunrise/Suncrest), Executive Secretary Simon Lagacé (Ferme Du Rapid). Secretary Treasurer Ron Black and other Directors include Bob Airth (Walking A Ranches), Jim King (Chickadee Farm), James Kurz (Green Way) and Steve Schweer (Alberta Plaid). As a group, we all hope to bring Galloway to the fore front to show other cattle producers what these cattle can do and why they should consider using or owning galloway genetics.

The Canadian Galloway Association would like to thank everyone who attended the World Galloway Conference in Guelph, Ontario

Galloway World Congress

T

he World Galloway Congress was held beginning on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, with registration followed by a Happy Hour. The home base for the entire conference was a beautiful resort called Gut Altona near Wildeshausen, Germany. From the Altona, we left each day to travel through the area to visit the farms of German Galloway breeders. Following registration, we met in the beautiful winter garden of the hotel where we were greeted by Georg Menke, Chairman of the Association of the German Galloway Breeders (BDG). He invited us to stay for Happy Hour followed by a dinner in the main banquet hall. Happy Hour was extended as Galloway breeders greeted old acquaintances and met new ones. A delicious dinner was served upstairs in the large banquet room. The meat dishes were Galloway beef donated by the various members of the German Galloway Association. By the time the evening ended, we

were all one big family, albeit with different “English” accents and languages. Wednesday morning began with a breakfast buffet in the hotel dining room followed by the conference opening in the large meeting room. Chairman Menke welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. Each country attending presented the report from its respective association. The reports were provided to everyone in a booklet in both German and English. After a break for a buffet luncheon, the presentation of the Galloway Marketing Project results were discussed. The work on the Galloway Marketing Project was a daunting collection of research from all over the world by the German Galloway Association and Galloways Australia Association. The resulting report, Galloway: the Genuine Alternative, is written in both English and German by Greg Stuart and Georg Menke. This is a AGBA Directory • 27

tremendous booklet of information about Galloways and the nutritional and health benefits of the meat they provide. The meeting ended at 5:00 PM. Attendees were given time to refresh themselves before meeting in the Winter Garden for visiting and dinner. A bagpiper began playing as the Grand Entrance of the Nations opened the dinner. It was quite a moving spectacle as each flag emerged from the hall proudly carried by its representative who placed it in a stand in the center of the hall to preside over attendees. What a glorious affair to begin a festive dinner accented by delicious foods highlighted by Galloway beef! Wednesday through Sunday we arose early to enjoy a scrumptious breakfast buffet in the hotel dining room before boarding one of the three coaches that drove us to the various farms to see all color patterns of Galloways. Many of the farmers grazed the cattle on land they owned, but also grazed their cattle on conservation areas. The cattle were moved at various times to and

from the conservation areas based on seasonal timing issues. We had dinner one evening in the “Bachus Hall” of the Bremer Town Hall following a visit to the Ratsweinkeller Bremen which is a famous wine cellar in Germany. We visited the Galloway Star Ranch where a working cow-horse presentation was given. We visited a weekly market in Osnabruck to enjoy lunch at a market stall with Galloway products. We saw a nature preserve that used Galloways as part of the landscape management program. We visited a moor and bog that grazed Galloways to learn about the origin of the moors. We were treated to a barbeque dinner and surprise bareback riding exhibition. All of the farms we visited treated us to luscious foods and spectacular desserts. What a wonderful conference! The German Galloway Association could not have done one thing more to make this conference more pleasurable. Many thanks to the BDG and kudos for all the hard work that they did to show us a wonderful time. Thank you to all our farm hosts!

Australian Galloway Association Report - 2014

I

n May the Australian Galloway Association held its Annual General Meeting in Canberra, and combined it with a field day at the DMB Belted Galloway and miniature Belted Galloway stud, the home of members Mark and Dianne Burgess. There was a great atttendance, and the morning session featured hands on demonstrations of tattooing, and height measurement for miniature Galloways. Malcolm Cock and Amberley Park, led a theory session in the afternoon on steer and carcase assessment, before returning outdoors to put theory into practice assessing some steers and looking at their structure. During the afternoon, the inaugural presentation of the Frank Allen and Shiralee Tomahawk trophies took place. These trophies are memorial trophies awarded to the highest scoring Galloway Family and Belted Galloway carcase respectively in any carcase competition throughout Australia during the year. The first winner of both these trophies was Peter Koppman, Greenethorpe Galloways. The winning carcase was a Belted Galloway, which achieved 92.5 points. The carcase won the Heavy Supermarket class of the Hoof and Hook competition at the November 2013 Albury Show, for carcases weighing between 251 and 350 kilograms, and was the reserve Champion carcase of the show. Interestingly, Peter donated the Shiralee Tomahawk trophy in memory of his bull Shiralee Tomahawk, which has sired the largest number of carcase competition winning offspring of any Belted Galloway bull in Australia. It was fitting that the carcase that won was that of a steer sired by Shiralee Tomahawk. Peter also entered steers in the same competition in November 2014, coming second (from 28 entries) in the Heavy Supermarket class with another Belted Galloway steer carcase, gaining 91 points. This carcase was placed 3rd overall, from the 41 total entries. An enjoyable dinner was held at night, with Jane Bradley giving a very interesting presentation on the history of Galloway and Galloway cattle. The next day saw the formalities for the weekend, with the Annual General 30 • AGBA Directory

Meeting, and election of the Committee. Gordon Matheson was returned as President, a position he has held since 2010. Members enjoyed their weekend, and left to travel home making plans for similar days. There were several field days held at various locations around Australia, where members exhibited their cattle and talked to interested people about Galloways. There are always high levels of interest, particularly from people moving to small acreage, lifestyle type properties from cities. The Association has noted a growing number of queries for miniature cattle to stock these properties, both as pets and as use for meat supplies. This has also led to an increase in membership, and the strengthening of networks within the membership. Similarly, members have been active at Shows, many winning interbreed competitions with their cattle. The Association has taken the iniative to encourage younger people into the Galloway breed, recognizing that these young people are the future of the breed, or any breed of cattle. We have made presentations of free membership to two young people who have made a good impression on our members, with their willingness to help out, and promotion of the Galloway breed. Both these young people have established their own studs, one with Belted Galloways and one with Galloways. The weather in Australia continues to be unpredictable, with many areas currently subject to unseasonably warm days and hot winds, with no rain. This has resulted in a lack of feed, and coupled with a lack of water, will cause major problems for some of our members. We hope they will be blessed with rain in the short term to help their Galloways to cope and survive. Despite these problems our members can see the positives of the Galloway breed and continue with their promotional activities. Please contact the Association if you are visiting Australia and we will be happy to put you in touch with any breeders in the areas you are visiting.
