DOG BREED CHARACTERISTICS WHEN TRYING TO DECIDE if a particular dog breed is right for you, it helps to know a little bit about the care the animal will require. This information was designed to give you a general idea of how a dog will behave as an adult. Not all dogs will conform to these guidelines (there’s an exception to every rule), but usually a dog follows some basic breed characteristics. Dogs generally do not view a human under the age of thirteen as being a leader (dominant pack member) and usually do not take commands from a young person for this reason. Do not get a dog for a child and expect the child to train the dog. A child and dog should be allowed to play together as peers, but the training should be the adult’s responsibility. The following is a list of codes for adult dog size, exercise requirements, coat care and temperament characteristics to help you decide if a particular breed is right for you. Size Giant: 100 lbs. and up Large: 50 lbs. up to 99 lbs

Medium: 20 lbs. up to 49 lbs Small: 19 lbs. and under

Half an hour a day, some of which should be a fast game of fetch in a fenced area. All dogs need some exercise, fresh air and a change of scenery, but these dogs can manage with just a daily game with their owners in a fenced area.

AHS: Dog Breed Characteristics Rev. October 1, 2007

A small family dog that is usually described as “accepting” of attention; slow to accept family friends, but will form a weak bond after many pleasant experiences; uncomfortable in crowds greater than five and will ignore strangers or sniff them and walk away Usually a one-family dog; shy with most strangers and can become a “fear-biter” if not properly socialized when young; will form a permanent bond with its owner, but will avoid most small children children: Very good dogs: (G) Good, cats: (G) Good, small pets: (G) Good,
