Introduction Lighting Innovation
What Is A Light Emitting Diode? A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a ‘solid state’ electronic component with the characteristics of a diode i.e. it only allows electrical current to flow in one direction through it. When the current flows through an LED in the correct direction, the LED produces light of a specific colour. LED’s only produce light of certain specific colour. Due to a variation in the method used to manufacture LEDs that emit white light, different colour temperatures are available - e.g. 6500 K, 5500 K, 4700 K, 3200 K and 2700 K.
How Do LEDs Work? The component parts of a discrete LED
At the heart of every LED there is a very small piece of semi-conducting material called the LED ‘die’. The die can be considered in the same way as the filament in a lamp, because it is the die that produces the light. The size of a high power LED die is approximately a 1mm cube and for other LED types much smaller. The base of the die is glued or soldered into a fine metal framework (the lead frame). A very fine wire called a bond wire is attached to the top of the LED die, which has a very fine conductive metal pattern on it. The wire is attached to the other side of the lead frame. When electricity of the correct voltage and polarity is applied to the LED via the lead frame contacts, current flows through the die. The different properties of the layers in the die cause between 50 and 90% of this electrical energy to be converted into light at the junction by a process called ‘injection electroluminescence’. This process is significantly more efficient than virtually any other light source! Injection electroluminescence does not require heat like a filament lamp (incandescence) or chemicals that glow like those used for a fluorescent tube (fluorescence). It is a phenomenon that is caused entirely by atomic differences
Efficiency Unfortunately, a large proportion of the light produced at the junction does not escape from the die and is reabsorbed, the remainder being converted to heat. As this is an ongoing development process, efficiency is increasing continuously. Even so, the LED is very efficient compared to conventional light sources. For example, an LED spotlight will consume only 5 to 10% of the energy of a halogen spotlight to achieve the same performance. Electroluminescence from an LED die. The bond wire can be seen at the top.

in the material caused by doping.
LED History & Evolution Light Emitting Diodes or LEDs operate very differently to filament lamps, discharge lamps and fluorescent tubes. They operate by ‘Injection electroluminescence’, a phenomenon first observed in 1907 by H. J. Round experimenting with Silicon Carbide. However, as he was really looking for new ways of radiolocation in seafaring, his discovery was completely forgotten about. • It wasn’t until 1962 that the first red LEDs were invented. • The first digital watch, the 1972 Pulsar ‘Time Computer’, used LEDs for its display. • By the mid 70’s other colours had joined red including yellow, orange and green, although the efficiency and light output was still very poor. • Between 1970 and 1995 the light output of red LEDs increased by a factor of approx 45 and between 1995 and 2003 the efficiency of LEDs increased by an light output per LED package by a factor of 430. The net result is that today LEDs have the efficiency and light output to be considered for many varied applications including traffic signals and signs, large area video displays, car instrument and switch illumination. Since 2005 further developments have seen a rapid growth in the use of LEDs for higher levels of illumination. For example LEDs replaced incandescent lamps (including headlamps) in cars in 2010. In December 2007 Italy decided to join Australia and Ireland to ban incandescent light bulbs. The ban took place in 2011. More European countries are planning on following Irelands and Australia’s “bright” decision in the near future. LEDs are already used for general lighting applications and decorative lighting and will replace many conventional light sources in the near future.
Timeline of LED Development 1907: The phenomenon of electroluminescence was first observed in a piece

of Silicon Carbide (SiC) by Henry Joseph Round. The light emitted was too dim to be of practical use. 1950s: British experiments using the semiconductor Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) let to the first LED in the early 1960s. It produced infra-red light and was used in sensing and photo-electric circuits. 1962: The first visible light LEDs were produced. They were red and not very efficient. 1970s: Green LEDs were produced, and then yellow ones followed. Yellow was initially achieved by combining red and green LEDs in one package. 1980s: The first ‘super-bright’ LEDs were produced by using Gallium Aluminium Arsenide Phosphide (GaAlAsP). They appeared first in red, then yellow and green. Early 1990s: Ultra-bright LEDs were produced using Indium Gallium Aluminium Phosphide (InGaAlP). The first blue LEDs started to appear. They used Silicon Carbide, but their output was very dim. Mid-late 1990s: Ultra-bright blue Gallium Nitride (GaN) LEDs arrived in the mid 1990s. These gave rise to white LEDs, in which the blue light from the chip is absorbed by fluorescent phosphors and re-emitted as white light. Early 2000s: Recently developed LEDs are now producing ultra-violet light. Efficiency of all LEDs is greater than ever.

Furnware Lighting Product Selection
Introduction White LEDs An LED die emits coloured light that is virtually monochromatic, so to produce white light a technique is used that is similar to that used in fluorescent tubes. In a fluorescent tube, a gas discharge produces ultra violet light which causes a phosphor coating mix on the inside of the glass tube to fluoresce and emit usable white light.
Structure of a single chip white LED: • A phosphor is added to the normally clear epoxy covering the LED die. Alternatively the latest technology provides a more homogeneous white light using chip level conversion (CLC), applying a thin phosphor layer on top of the die. • A blue LED die stimulates the phosphor. • The phosphor emits a yellowish light. • The light from the phosphor and the blue LED combine to produce white light of different colour temperatures.
Colour Temperature Because the white light is produced by mixing the light from two sources (die and phosphor) and the proportions of light from the two sources can vary, the colour temperature of a white LED can lie between 2700 K and 11000 K. Grouping of these LEDs is therefore essential to ensure that there is little perceived difference in colour between individual discrete LEDs or LED modules. The luminous efficacy of white LEDs is better than a tungsten halogen lamp. Typical warm white LED Typical natural white LED
Multi-colour LEDs blue, can be mixed together to produce a wider range of colours. By incorporating a red, green and blue (RGB LED) die into the same package the LED can be used for applications ranging from large area video screens using up to 50,000 LEDs per square metre, to colour changing luminaries for lighting whole buildings.
Individual die red, green and blue.

Reliability Unlike the majority of lamps, LEDs do not suffer ‘catastrophic failures’ (i.e. stop producing light in normal operation). With an LED, the light output gradually reduces over time, the rate of light output reduction being dependent primarily on the average operating temperature of the LED die (the junction temperature). As the time for the light output of an LED to decline to a level where it is no longer usable could be tens of years, then the agreed method for specifying LED lifetime is the time after which the light output falls to 50% of its original value. Even with this method, the lifetime for LEDs under the right conditions can be as much as 150,000 hours (17 years) continuous operation and the LED is still emitting usable light ! As LEDs are solid in their construction and are not made from fragile materials they have a high immunity to shock and vibration.
Efficiency As mentioned above, it currently needs only 1 white LEDs to duplicate the light output of a 20 Watt halogen bulb, but the power consumption of the LEDs © Copyright 2014 All Rights Reserved. Prices & specifications subject to change without notice.
would only be 1.2 Watts! However, a fluorescent lamp would consume in the region of 8 Watts to produce the same amount of light. At present white LEDs can offer energy efficient alternatives in some, but not all applications. In applications where colour is utilised, LEDs often offer a higher efficiency than filtered white light sources, including fluorescent tubes which reduces heat dissipation, energy costs and the size and cost of power supplies. This in turn reduces the design and construction cost of luminaries as there is no need to accommodate LED replacement or to deal with very high temperatures.

also has been added to the ‘master and slave’ lighting system in some devices. The switching on/off of the devices connected to the TLD Sensor is carried out with the single touch of the LED on the TLD Sensor. It is possible to adjust the intensity of the light by holding a finger on the LED. A brief flash of the LED indicates that maximum brightness has been reached. The brightness level will be memorized until the next adjustment. The TLD Sensor also integrates a ‘night-light’ function which activates only when the devices are switched off. In a daylight or bright environment, the LED on the TLD Sensor glows brightness of the LED increases providing a handy ‘night-light’ function. The ‘night-light’ function can be activated or deactivated by holding a finger on the TLD Sensor for 15 seconds after which, the deactivation of the function will be notified by 2 slow flashes of the LED, or its activation by 3 fast flashes. The TLD Sensor is fitted with a safety program that turns off all connected devices after 18 hours of continuous operation. A further feature of the TLD Sensor is ‘auto-on’ that automatically turns on the connected LED fittings at the previously set luminosity. This function is especially useful for the automatic turning on of a collection of Lights for example in a show room. When the main light switches are turned on, the detail lighting will activate at their various pre-set brightness without having to adjust all the levels individually.

also has been added to the ‘master and slave’ lighting system in some devices.

Dream Architectural devices for effective lighting Materials: Techno polymer

Finishes: Grey dyed on the body Light sources: LED, RGB LED Installation: On the surface, semi-recessed or completely recessed Registered design As a result of research carried out by DOMUS Line’s technical staff,
Dream V10
DREAM brings together unique lighting effects and professional lighting solutions. DREAM is a courtesy light designed to be installed wherever decorative lighting is required. The DREAM unit is characterised by a stainless steel insert that acts as an anti-glare screen and a Soft Touch electronic switch. DREAM has a thickness of only 10mm and can be installed on the surface, either as semirecessed (keeping only the diffuser out of the recess) or completely
Dream RGB
recessed so that the unit is flush with the surrounding surface. Made from injection techno polymer, it has a polycarbonate diffuser with a satin finish. DREAM integrates a high power LED, whose light projection is conveyed inside the thin diffusing screen, exploiting the physical principle of total internal reflection. The full light effects, with lighting of the perimeter, and the ‘star’ effect which produces a blade of light that accentuates on the four corners, are unique to DREAM and have a strong effect. DREAM is also available with RGB technology and a built in colour it is possible to either choose your desired colour, or to start a wide ranging mix of colours from purple to pink, from orange to cyan, from deep blue to light blue and beyond! The colour changing sequence can be stopped at any desired colour making it possible to customise the light colour to suit your emotions. The design of the DREAM, with no sharp edges, very low heat output, and extra low voltage makes it an ideal lighting solution in hotels, and even for use in children’s bedheads.

The operation and the adjustment of the colour is very simple and designed so that even children can use it. With a touch of the switch, the unit is turned on to the last colour saved. With a subsequent longer touch (3 seconds), the sequence of colours is activated (red, green, blue and all the intermediate shades). To stop the sequence on a favourite colour, quickly touch the switch when the desired colour has been found. FLEXYLED RGB has been developed using Domus Line’s superior
Flexyled RGB Modules
RGB LED technology. Colour changing sequences have never been easier with the availability of remote control units which allows for various pre-set colour mixing patterns or solid colours covering a wide spectrum. This makes it possible to personalise a lighting installation to suit various moods and to individually match or compliment any décor. FLEXYLED RGB has been designed to incorporate a special quick connect Micro RGB connector system which eliminates the

need for time consuming and messy soldered connections. This connection system ensures a uniform and consistent spacing between the individual LED chips, thus eliminating shadow areas and bright spots caused by uneven joints in the LED strip. The FLEXYLED RGB modules are available in four lengths, which can all be cut to length in 75mm increments, and 90° corners are also available to continue the smooth light flow even at the corners. High quality 3M self-adhesive backing tape and interconnecting cables make the FLEXYLED RGB

also has been added to the ‘master and slave’ lighting system in some devices. The switching on/off of the devices connected to the TLD Sensor is carried out with the single touch of the LED on the TLD Sensor. It is possible to adjust the intensity of the light by holding a finger on the LED. A brief flash of the LED indicates that maximum brightness

has been reached.

It operates at 12V dc so is therefore safe and easy to install and can switch up to 11 connected 12V dc LED fitting up to 30W maximum. The CAPSENS V13 switch is operated by lightly touching the surface of the material over the position where the sensor is concealed. Supplied with 2 metre power and switch cables with MiniPlug connectors and a distribution block, CAPSENS is truly the way forward in 12V dc LED control. CAPSENS V13 must be connected in line between the power supply and the LED fittings.
To operate the CAPSENS V13 switch, touch the area of the surface directly over where the sensor is concealed. It is possible to adjust the intensity of the connected LED lights by holding a finger on the ‘activation area’. A brief flash of the LED fitting connected to the CAPSENS V13 indicates that maximum brightness has been reached. The brightness level will be memorized until the next adjustment. The ‘activation’ area is about 50mm diameter and the maximum thickness of the material
30mm 12mm 20mm
on which CAPSENS is installed must not be 20mm for plastic. CAPSENS also integrates the functions ‘soft-start’ and ‘soft-stop’ and will automatically turn off after about 18 hours. A further feature of the CAPSENS V13 is ‘auto-on’ that automatically turns on the connected LED fittings at the previously set luminosity. This function is especially useful for the automatic turning on of a collection of Lights for example in a show room. When the main switches are turned on, the LED lighting will activate at their various pre-set brightness’s without having to adjust all the levels individually. *This data is indicative of the sensitivity of CAPSENS V13 and can increase or decrease dependant on the composition of the material to which the sensor is applied. CASPSENS V13 cannot be installed on or behind metalic surfaces and for other materials such as granite, marble and composites it is recommended that a preliminary test is carried out before final installation.

A 2 metre long power cable with MiniPlug connectors and a distributor block with provision for connection of 11 devices (maximum load is 30W @ 12V dc) are provided as standard. TLD Sensor must be connected in line between the power supply and the LED fittings.
The switching on/off of the devices connected

to the TLD Sensor is carried out with the single touch of the LED on the TLD Sensor. In a daylight or bright environment, the LED on the TLD Sensor glows with a soft dim light. With low or no light, the brightness of the LED increases providing a handy ‘night-light’ function. The ‘night-light’ function can be activated or deactivated by holding a finger on the TLD Sensor for the function will be notified by 2 slow flashes of the LED, or its activation by 3 fast flashes.

350mA PIXEL V13 is a universal fixture. It can be installed either flush in a through hole (A), flush in a blind hole of at least 13mm depth (B) or in metal sheet with a minimum thickness of 0.8mm (C). The fastening system is quick, does not require tools, and uses a lateral pressure harmonic steel spring. The 2 metre long power cable is fitted with BUS connectors. All PIXEL LED fittings must be wired in series and powered by a 350mA power supply.
Surface Installation Two types of spacers allow for surface installation of PIXEL. The SP version ensures symmetric projection; whereas the OB version with asymmetric projection lets you install the fixture on a vertical wall, allowing you to easily hide the cable behind the cabinet. The 20° angle ensures uniform lighting from the top.
