French for Healthcare Professionals Program This program will help improve the communication between patient and healthcare professionals. The objective is to allow efficient communication in French from health care professionals in order to accommodate expectations from the health and social services sectors in Ontario. This program relies on the strength of student exchange to improve professional communication. Exchange of ideas and opinions lead to critical thinking, and allow the sharing of knowledge and experience to support learning. Lectures emphasize improving French by sharing articles and depending upon 4 Second Language learning skills: • Oral and written understanding • Written and oral expressions Ministry of Health and Long Term Care sponsored long-term program: Please note that this course meets the requirement for tuition reimbursement as part of the French Language Training Program sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Objectives Students will learn how to respond to specific questions based on practical knowledge. In addition, he or she will be able to answer opinion-based questions and provide advice on various topics.

Prerequisites The student must: • Be working or studying in a healthcare related field. • Have a secondary school diploma or equivalent. • Have a general knowledge of the health sector. • Have french skills equivalent to French as a Second Language - Intermediate Level 3. • Be motivated. • Be available either one afternoon or one evening per week.

Certificates Every student, upon completion of the program, will receive a certificate. The program consists of 5 intermediate levels and 5 advanced levels. Students enter program at a level based on their preliminary assessment. Minimum 5 advanced level courses required for certificate.

Meet the teacher The program was conceived by Jocelyne Le Ber. Jocelyne lives in Kingston, Ontario. She is bilingual and has taught for many years at Collège Boréal’s continuing education department. She authored several books and articles. She specialises in synchronous teaching of French as a Second Language and French for health care professionals. Jocelyne will help you along the way to use tools required to perfect your French written and oral communication. She will answer your questions and will conduct intermediate and advanced classes every week.

Schedule Every semester, Collège Boréal will feature 4 different levels. Classes last 3 hrs. per week for 10 weeks. The schedule will be from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and in the evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. according to levels.

Minimum registrations To take place, every level will require a minimum of 5 registered students and a maximum of 8.

Assessment Prior to registration, the student will receive a reminder from the teacher in charge of the program with specific questions. This oral evaluation will allow the teacher to assign the student at the proper level.

Program details • Program will be featured every semester according to the level of registrations. Every class is synchronous, allowing interactive exchange between students and teachers. This takes place in real time through a web platform. This method allows sharing of applications and interaction. • We use the (Contact North | Contact Nord) Saba platform. • During the class, participants may intervene at any time. The teacher being present, no delays, questions will be answered instantly. This type of class looks very similar to a regular class with the teacher present.

Course content Every course is adapted to each student’s needs. They will be able to acquire necessary tools to communicate effectively with their patients and patient family members in French.

When will course take place? Courses take place in the afternoon and in the evening in order to accommodate scheduling constraints of students twice a week. Students will be able to choose between 4 courses of various levels per semester: Intermediate 1 Intermediate 2 Advanced 1 Advanced 4

Intermediate level description Intermediate level: 150 hours of French instruction, 30 hours per level. Students will practice their language ability from the simplest tasks to the most specialized. From the simple how are you? to the level of pain and specific diseases and sicknesses, as well as describing various hospital services and associated professions. The students will know meaning and common anglicisms. She or he will discover with language captions how to replace them by adequate expressions. It will enrich their vocabulary. At the intermediate level, students will explore cultural and institutional outcomes (consultation, health cards in Canada and France, health care systems in both countries) present in linguistic objectives (specialised lexicon, specialised grammar adapted to principal professionals issues: questionnaires, clinical descriptions, prescriptions, advice, vocabulary improvement while avoiding anglicisms). Small frames will provide necessary information applied to exercises.

Advanced level description The advanced level includes 150 hours of French classes, 30 hours per level. Students will be able to practice their French through simple to highly specialised tasks. Learning will be done using authentic French documents related to health care. By using these documents, the students will develop oral and written language skills through press clips, and documentaries. The students will improve her/his understanding of the French language, written and spoken and will be able to understand native speakers using familiar expressions, common and continuous. Student will learn to clarify in writing her/his ideas and arguments in a logical coherent way while using vocabulary and expressions relevant to the study of every subject and theme

For 10 weeks, will improve her/his reading, pronunciation through various text. She/he will answer specific and contextual questions using varied words and expressions related to the subject of the day. She/he will acquire medical French terminology.

Evaluations and exams Evaluations take place during presentations, attendance, and final exams.

Waiting list There is the possibility of adding to yourself to a waiting list if the featured courses do not match the candidate level. Alternatively, the student may register to a lower or a higher available level.
