If finished sizes are requested other than the noted sizes in these tables, this will need to be sold as a No. 1 non-verified grade as timber verification is based on standard finish sizes.

Wharves Special Notes

Band sawn finish: To achieve this popular finish as a verified Weka SG8 grade it must finish at the same sizes as the Planer Gauged e.g. 244 x 94. This is taken out of Rough Sawn stock and band sawn to order.

Jettys

• Square edges except 47mm sizes and 94 x 69 and 94 x 94 have pencil-round edges • Length range: 3.6, 4.2, 4.8, 5.4, 6.0, 7.2m • Cut-to-length option • H3.2 treatment is available on request

The above sizes are currently marketed as a non-verified product. This is mainly due to the fact that these sizes usually incorporate part of the low density portion of a log, which results in lower stiffness than is required to meet a SG8 grade.

Weka No.1™ Wet: Information non verified

Can Weka No.1™ Wet be used where an SG6 grade has been specified? As per the table below these grade do have the same characteristics but the key difference is that the SG6 grade has been tested to verify properties and the Weka No.1™ Wet hasn't. This means that where a Weka No.1™ Wet grade is used in a structural application an engineered attentive solution is likely to be required. SG6 grade verified timber is not readily available or commonly tested in larger size timbers whereas a No.1 Frame grade is normally held ex stock.

Weka No.1™ Wet typically displays the above characteristics if it has been visually graded correctly.

ATS Timber Tips • Darker paints and stains can cause splitting and distortion by attracting heat especially on Weka SG8™ and Weka No.1™ products as they are wet treated. If you would like to paint or stain we recommend using lighter colours and stains or products such as Resene Cool Colour™ to help minimise movement caused by coatings. Take this Builders Book into your local colour shop for professional advice. • When cutting Weka No.1™ this decreases the amount of protection from the treatment so ensure that cut ends are re endsealed with a brush on H5 treatment product such as Metalex. This is especially important if product is being used in ground. See your local ATS Timber Approved Reseller for these products. • Weka No.1™ can be used in structural applications where an alternative solution is engineered designed and approved under the NZ Building Code.

• Kingfisher SG8™ Dry products are supplied in a machined finish and will require some sanding to achieve an optimum finish. As they are a square edged product we recommend that you lightly sand or chamfer the edges with a plane to take away the sharpness and ‘fluffy’ finish resulting from sanding the faces.

• Beware of putting Kea SG8™ products in direct contact with metal surfaces where visual appearance is critical because this can cause a chemical reaction with a black oxidising look on the timber that is difficult to remove. If this occurs, a rust neutraliser can be applied to help remove the stain. • Kea SG8™ products are supplied in a machined finish and will require some sanding and to achieve an optimum finish. They are a square edge product we recommend that you lightly sand or chamfer the edges with a plane to take away the sharpness and ‘fluffy’ finish resulting from sanding the faces.

Macrocarpa No.1: Information non verified

Complies with

ATS Timber Tips • Macrocarpa No.1 can be used in structural applications where an alternative solution is engineered designed and approved under the NZ Building Code.

The six determinations have established certain criteria to decide whether Macrocarpa, or Lawson or Mexican cypress timbers, are Code compliant when installed to the exterior of buildings. Such timbers are the equivalent to structural grade Radiata Pine treated to Hazard Class H3.2, and therefore comply with Clause B2 of the Building Code if: • They are heart timbers • They are not in contact with the ground • They are relatively easy to replace • Their surfaces are treated with appropriate preservative • Their cut ends are similarly treated or suitably capped • They have a durability of at least 50 years according to Clause B2.3.1 (a) (i).

Extract of Issue 25 Determination from the Department of Building and Housing. For full determinations see www.dbh.govt.nz/determinations

32

Builders book 2014 Edition

• Beware of putting Macrocarpa No.1 products in direct contact with metal surfaces where visual appearance is critical because this can cause a chemical reaction with a black oxidising look on the timber that is difficult to remove. If this occurs, a rust neutraliser can be applied to help remove the stain. • Macrocarpa No.1 is an untreated product so avoid direct contact with the ground if used outside and in applications where it is moist with minimal air movement as this could cause product failure.

Best Practice Guide: Beams & Framing

General • All products must be inspected as being fit for intended purpose before installation. ATS Timber Ltd accepts no responsibility for movement or splitting of the timber once received and/or installed.

• Macrocarpa should be coated with an approved coating system to enhance durability. It is an untreated product that will be subject to decay over time if exposed to moisture. • Product supplied is deemed fit for purpose. Wet timber products are prone to splitting, bending, warping and twisting as they dry out, especially under hot and dry conditions.

• All products must be installed correctly in accordance with the New Zealand Building Code. • All fasteners and hardware used in conjunction with the timber must comply with equivalent New Zealand Standards and best industry practices. We recommend the use of stainless steel fasteners and hardware for maximum performance, especially where the product is treated with CCA, LOSP or ACQ. • All timber should remain in its protective packaging until it is ready for installation. • Most timber will require some preparation before and/or after installation to achieve a high quality finish. • We recommend that all timber products should be installed and securely fastened promptly upon receipt of the goods to minimise any movement that may result from them being left loose or in extreme conditions. • These are natural products and may be subject to movement and resin bleed especially in hot conditions. • We do not recommend the use of dark paints or coatings as this may accentuate movement and splitting of timber, especially if it is exposed to the sun or hot temperatures.

Wet Treated Radiata Pine & Macrocarpa • For use in fully ventilated and/or outdoor environments. • If storage is required until installation, it must be left strapped up and covered for protection from extreme heat or weather conditions. Failure to do so could result in splitting, bowing or twisting.

Kiln dried Radiata Pine & Douglas Fir • Must be protected from any moisture or weather. • Should be used in a well ventilated, interior environment and not subject to extreme or prolonged heat as this may accentuate splitting, bowing and twisting. • Not recommended for use where exposed to any weather or moisture. If exposed it must be sealed and protected in accordance with New Zealand Building Code practices. • These products are supplied to a No.1 Frame grade specification, which includes knots. They are not sanded and sealed. Products will require work before applying coatings.

Handling of treating timber • Wear a dust mask and protective eye wear when cutting and sanding treated timber. • Wear gloves when handling treated timber. • Thoroughly wash any skin that has been in contact with treated timber. • Dispose of treated timber by ordinary rubbish collection. Do not burn. • Any cut ends must be end- sealed before installation.

Disclaimer: This information is a guide only. Professional advice from an industry expert regarding each specific application is recommended. Please read the above in conjunction with the NZ Building Code and Branz publications. ATS Timber Ltd will not take any responsibility for any product failure where the above Best Practice Guidelines haven’t been fully adhered to.

Best Practice Guide: Boards & Mouldings

General • All products must be inspected for being fit-for-purpose before installation. ATS Timber Ltd accepts no responsibility for movement or splitting of the timber once received by the customer and/or installed. • All products must be installed correctly in accordance with the New Zealand Building Code. • All fasteners and hardware used in conjunction with the timber must comply with equivalent New Zealand Standards and best industry practices. We recommend the use of stainless steel fasteners for maximum performance when used in exterior application. Especially where the product is treated with BCCA, LOSP or ACQ.

where there is risk of excessive movement in timber flooring should be avoided or minimised. These include areas exposed to direct sunlight, under floor heating and extremes in moisture. • Moisture content and profiling must be checked before installation. No claims will be considered once the product is installed. • The building must be completely closed in before laying timber flooring. • Any flooring to be installed, particularly in an air-conditioned environment should be strip-stacked in its final environment for approximately two weeks to allow the timber to acclimatise to its surroundings prior to installation. • A 10mm expansion gap should be left around all walls.

• All timber should remain in its protective packaging until it is ready for installation.

• When installed over joists, joins must be made on solid support. All concrete substrates must be sealed.

• Most timber will require some preparation before and/or after installation to achieve a high quality finish.

• It is recommended to seal all faces, edges and ends before installation.

• We recommend that all timber products should be installed, securely fastened and supported where required promptly upon receipt of the goods to minimise any movement that may result from them being left loose or in extreme conditions.

• When using nails, always pre-drill.

• These are natural products and may be subject to movement and resin bleed especially in hot conditions. • We do not recommend the use of dark paints or coatings as this may accentuate movement and splitting of timber, especially if it is exposed to the sun or hot temperatures. • Where product is having coatings applied, these must be applied to all faces

Flooring • Timber flooring from ATS Timber is supplied at a level of moisture content between 10 and 15%. This is suitable for normal ambient indoor conditions in the New Zealand climate. Areas in the house

• Sanding and finishing should be done as soon as possible after installation.

• Fill all nail holes and remove any dirt, dust etc. • Spot prime & sand until an even surface achieved. • Apply two coats of quality top coat. • Pre-primed products must be painted within 3 weeks of installation. • Prime all cut ends prior to installation.

Handling of treated timber • Wear a dust mask and protective eye wear when cutting and sanding treated timber. • Wear gloves when handling treated timber. • Thoroughly wash any skin that has been in contact with treated timber. • Dispose of treated timber by ordinary rubbish collection. Do not burn. • This information is a guide only. Professional advice from an industry expert regarding each specific application is recommended.

• All the above guidelines must be adhered to, to minimise any risk of movement and shrinkage.

Pre-primed Weatherboards & Fascia • The primer does not waterproof timber. Pre-primed products must be protected from any exposure to moisture until the top coats have been applied. Moisture uptake may result in raised grain and movement. • Any weatherboard or fascia supplied as unprimed must be primed prior to installation. • Allow adequate expansion gaps between boards.

NEW ZEALAND TIMBER GRADING RULES

This Standard gives the requirements for timber and wood-based products for particular uses in building so that they can be expected to give acceptable performance during the life of the building. To that end this Standard covers the materials themselves and aspects of design and construction that are relevant to their performance in use.

Replaces amendment 3 which was found to contain errors ... The amendment provides for lower design stresses for non verified timber. It recognises deficiencies in sole reliance on existing timber grading methods as a means of reliably establishing the characteristic strength and stiffness properties of sawn timber. The amendment also provides design stresses for new verified timber grades.

Replaces NZS3604:1999. Provides methods and details for the design and construction of timber-framed structures not requiring specific engineering design. This Standard applies to residential buildings up to three-storeys high including multi-residential buildings, some commercial buildings and freestanding, uninhabited garages.

This Standard describes procedures for the initial evaluation and daily quality control requirements necessary to ensure that timber has the structural properties claimed for it. The procedures apply both to timber that is visually and machine stress graded.

Establishes visual grading rules for the selection of timber into quality classes. Four types of grades have been specified. Provision has also been made for new crop radiata pine.

CHEMICAL PRESERVATION OF ROUND AND SAWN TIMBER

This Standard sets out requirements for the preservative treatment and identification of timber to provide protection from decay and insect attack including marine borers in all likely exposure conditions throughout New Zealand, based on six hazard classes that are described in this Standard.

Species Info: Radiata Pine

DESCRIPTION Radiata Pine is a medium density softwood which heartwood is a light brown to chestnut brown in colour and the sapwood is a creamy white with promonent growth rings. Radiata Pine has a troublesome corewood and a large pith through the centre. This corewood occurs in the first 10-12 years of growth and is subject to extensive longitudinal shrinkage and has a spiral grain which causes it to twist as it dries. The wood density increases with the age of the tree and with the mean annual temperature which results in the more dense timber coming from warmer regions of the country.

Radiata Pine is not naturally durable and is susceptible to decay causing fungi and insect borers. This has been overcome by it accepting timber treatment such as CCA, CQ and ACQ. This extends the life of the timber for decades and can be as durable as most heartwoods. It accepts every treatment level from H1.1 to H6 Hazard Classes.

SUSTAINABILITY Radiata Pine is a sustainable resource grown in managed plantation forests. There is an increasing number of forests becoming certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). There has also been an 80% uptake on forest owners that have adopted the New Zealand Forest Owners' Environmental Code of Practice for Plantation Forestry. There is approximately 1.7 million hectare’s of sustainably grown Radiata Pine in New Zealand with an annual harvest of around 24 million m³.

RADIATA PINE New Zealand’s No.1 selling timber was introduced to New Zealand from California in the 1870s and was commonly used for shelterbelts.

Species Info: Douglas Fir

DESCRIPTION The heartwood of Douglas Fir (a high proportion of the tree), is a pale, pinkishbrown colour and the sapwood almost white. It has very prominent, evenly spaced growth rings which is a result of the considerable difference in density and colour between the springwood and the latewood. Douglas Fir does not have a troublesome corewood like Radiata Pine and has a lower moisture content when green and air dries readily with very little distortion problems but is prone to surface checking. Douglas Fir trees are normally harvested when they are 40-50 years old which results in them having a higher stiffness compared to Radiata Pine.

SUSTAINABILITY

DOUGLAS FIR

Douglas Fir is a sustainably grown timber in New Zealand, producing a renewable supply of structural timber with the majority of forest owners being members of eco-certification schemes such as FSC.

New Zealands second most commonly used timber after Radiata Pine with approximately 113,000 hectre's and has been used in building construction since the 1930's. It is a naturally durable, strong and decay resistant timber.

70

Builders book 2014 Edition

Douglas Fir heartwood is rated as Class 3 durability and the sapwood is non-durable. Due to it's natural characteristic's it won't accept CCA treatment to H3.2 standard so it is not suitable for exterior cladding or exterior timber joinery. Being a refractory species it can resist wetting and has a natural ability to withstand decay for longer periods without the need for treatment against it.

Species Info: Macrocarpa

DESCRIPTION Macrocarpa is a medium density softwood that is part of the Cypress family. The colouring is similar to kauri with it’s heartwood a golden brown colour and it’s sapwood a more creamy white (similar to Radiata Pine). It’s two most common grades are Clears and Dress Grade, a knotty grade. There are also lower grades for larger sizes and outdoor use such as Framing grade and Sleeper grade. It is a very stable timber and is commonly used for timber joinery with an excellent visual appearance. The nature of the timber means it can’t be kiln dried and must be air dried (seasoned) to avoid cell collapse and internal checking which can take approx. 8-12 months.

DURABILITY

Mechnical Properties Modulus of elasticity (bending stiffness)

5.79 GPa

Modulus of rupture (bending strength)

87.8 MPa

Density at 12% moisture content

543 kg/m³

MACROCARPA A common sight in rural New Zealand, Macrocarpa has been used extensively for shelterbelts. This naturally durable timber has been used for a wide range of applications both interior an exterior, preferred for its natural colour and appearance. This species of cypress was introduced to New Zealand in the mid 1860's and has since become a popular choice with approximately 7000 hectare’s of cypress plantations (this includes other species).

Macrocarpa heartwood is moderately durable for above ground applications and is commonly used for weatherboards, fascia, pergola's, fence pailings and other outdoor uses, whereas the sapwood is nondurable. Macrocarpa is unable to be treated at all due to its natural characteristics that won't accept the treatment, but heartwood that is exposed to the weather should be sound for 20-30 years and if protected from the weather, it should last 40-60 years. A producer statement can be produced for Macrocarpa being used outdoors should the council require it. Both the heartwood and sapwood are naturally borer resistant.

Acceptable Solution

Conversion Chart

Untreated Douglas Fir The new timber treatment system for Acceptable Solution B2/AS1 allows untreated Douglas fir to be used in house of a defined low-risk design. Research shows that Douglas Fir resists decay better than untreated Radiata Pine, but not as well as H1.2 treated timber. Untreated solid Douglas fir framing can be used for a house of no more than two storeys ( as define in NZS 3604), that is designed and constructed to NZS 3604, if ALL the following low-risk conditions are met:
