Commodore’s Message

Commodore Don Lawson

Whew! – Summerset 51 is now in the history books. The members of the Summerset Committee did a fantastic job pulling all of the hundreds of details together to make this year’s big regatta a major success. I cannot say enough about the work just a handful of people did to organize the events that make up Summerset – a fine tradition of the Caloosahatchee Marching and Chowder Society.

We all had major concerns about Hurricane Matthew but we kept our hopes high and the race was rewarded with some of the most favorable winds in the history of the 51 year old event. Hurricane Matthew turned out to be a ‘non-event’ for SW Florida and Summerset turned out to be an awesome event. We don’t have the final numbers on Summerset just yet since we’re still receiving money and paying bills. There were about 45 racers and cruisers and about 45 sponsors and some 31 TShirt sleeve sponsors. Those sleeve sponsors help our benefit for youth sailing a tremendous amount and I thank you for your generous contribution. For those of you who didn’t support Summerset this year I hope you will consider chipping in next year – if not with your time then with your dollars. It is a good cause and helps get young people interested in and skilled in the art of sailing. Wendy Cook is already pulling the calendar and yearbook together for next year. It’s a big job and Wendy does a great job gathering the information and getting it published. If you have pictures of our members participating in club events this past year please send them to Wendy. Pictures of our members having fun are just what we’re looking for.

It’s also time to renew your membership in CMCS for next year the deadline is Nov. 30. This year you will be able to renew your membership on line and with your credit card. We’ve had many requests for this in recent years and we’ve worked a way to make this renewal process as easy as sailing on a beam reach. Of course if you prefer the ‘old school’ paper method you can still print out a form and mail in a check. Whatever works for you please renew soon so you’ll be listed in the 2017 calendar membership roster. On another note we’re now seeking nominations for the Good Samaritan Award. This is an award started many years ago by the late Betty Goodacre, a long time member of CMCS. We want to reward and recognize members who go out of their way to help and aid another boater or person on the water. If you have seen or know of someone who should be recognized for doing a good deed, please send me an email or letter. My email has been listed in the calendar for the past 10 years. Robert Macomber presented a very interesting and entertaining program for our October meeting. If you missed it you missed a good one. Bob is always able to weave a good story that keeps our members quiet and on the edge of their chairs. Next month our Program Chairman Diane Fowler has arranged for yet another very good program. Just when you think she can’t top this one – she does. So for our next meeting our program will be presented by Ken Bardon of Marco Island who circumnavigated on an Island Packet 485. His trip lasted almost 3 years and covered 40,000 miles. You can get a sneak preview by checking out Ken’s blog at the following URL: www.sailblogs.com/member/moonbeam Don Lawson 2016 CMCS Commodore s/v Sunday Silence

Rear Commodore of Cruising’s Report Hello Sailors! It’s here – that gorgeous time of year. The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting cooler, Florida in the fall. This weekend was just gorgeous – there might even be a little “nip” in the air! My favorite time of year! Rear Commodore‑ Cruising Jean Blessing

The Halloween Cruise to Legacy Harbor, led by Barry and Julie Long and Steve Romaine and Cindy Carlino, will have come and gone by the time you read this article. I hope you had the chance to take it in. Rum and Illiteracy is next up, promising to be a fun cruise led by Kim Brown, November 11-13. Sounds like Kim has some fun in store for those attending. You’ll want to bring your dinghy. More info elsewhere in this Chowder Chatter. Due to the delay in the release of Bob Macomber’s new book, Rum and Reading will take place March 31 through April 2, 2017. The second cruise for November is the Thanksgiving Cruise to Pelican Bay over Thanksgiving weekend, November 23-28. Glen and Paula Vetter are the cruise leaders. If you are going to Cabbage Key for Thanksgiving Dinner, be sure to make reservations with the cruise leaders! See the article on another page of this newsletter for details. The final cruise of this year, which spills over into 2017, is the Holiday cruise at the end of December. I checked with Randy at Fisherman’s Village, and so far, none of the renovations have affected the marina. More details will follow though I believe all slips are spoken for. Cruise leaders are Carolyn Wilson and Dan Green. Plans are underway for cruising in 2017. If you led a cruise this year and wish to continue, be sure to let me know. If you are just dying to lead a cruise next year, contact me. I can hook you up! See you on the water! And, keep on cruising! Jean Blessing 2016 Rear Commodore-Cruising s/v Jazzy

Rear Commodore—Racing

Rear CommodoreRacing Eric Milbrandt

With our thoughts on the communities in Haiti, Cuba and the eastern coast of Florida, Hurricane Matthew was a big concern for the on-the-water racing planned for Summerset. The forecast during the week looked great for Saturday and Sunday racing but dicey for the boats coming from out of town on Friday.

The decision was made on Thursday to proceed with the regatta, as planned, and was not an easy decision to make. For the out of town boats, some traveled on Friday, some could only race on Sunday but the weather for the regatta was the best we have seen for a Summerset regatta in recent memory. The racers enjoyed a good 10-15 kts of breeze that carried all of the boats around the buoys on Saturday and on the distance course on Sunday. Thank you to Joe Periard, the PRO, for running the races. The signal boat was provided by Mark and Jo Beauvois who without hesitating stepped forward to support your club and the rich history of Summerset. Kathleen and Russell Vance took check-ins and finish times. Steve Roake helped me think through the mark boat duties, ran to the storage locker for marks at the last minute, and spent hours scoring the regatta. Lastly, thanks to Joel Andrews for the use of his Aquasport. For those of you who may be wondering, our club has so many volunteers who continue to support the racing program. Please take time to thank these individuals the next time you see them. The results are posted on summersetregatta.com. The next race is the Festival of the Islands on November 5, then the Commodore's Cup on Dec. 10. I'm looking for a signal boat and volunteers who want to learn more about racing. Please consider getting involved. The Naples Commodore Cup racing will occur on 10/29 and Marco Island on 11/12. go to sailplay.com for more information. Rum and Illiteracy – York Island or thereabouts- Nov 11-13 For years this cruise has promoted the worthy goal of literacy among sailors and it tied into Bob Macomber’s Book Bacchanalia. Well Bob’s next book won’t be out until next spring. (save the date of April 1, 2017). Bob decided he needs a book launch as an excuse to party. Silly Bob. We decided we only needed Rum….

Page 6

LEGACY HARBOR HALLOWEEN CRUISE The First Halloween Cruise to Legacy Harbour Marina was frightfully fantastic! This was also the first time that Julie and Barry Long had the privilege to co-lead a cruise (with Steve Romaine – mister “Summerset” aka Popeye - and Cindy Carlino – the classic masters of ceremonies!). It was indeed spooky! We had ghosts and goblins ready to haunt the Chickee bar – a few bad backs (and later, bad batteries) slowed down some of our ghouls, but a scary good time was had by all!

This is more of an excursion than a cruise. On Friday, November 11, Trust Me!!! will arrive on the scene in time for happy hour. We intend to anchor off of York/St. James City unless the wind is uncooperative. Sanibel Bight is the obvious alternative. We’ll monitor 72/16. Happy hour Friday will be on TrustMe!!! or any larger boat willing to host the tasting. Standard drill5P, BYOB and munchies to share. At 6P or sooner the tastings will begin. We have added a fresh bottle of last year’s winner (in the photo) to our ship’s stores. It will take on all challengers. So bring your favorite. Remember this is a serious search for a sailor’s salsipotent sipping rum. No umbrella drinks or rum punch concoctions allowed. Rums from New Jersey need not apply. Like the Olympics there will be preliminaries and quarter finals and semi’s and finals and recharges and any other reason we can think of to keep the bottles moving. In the end there should be only one bottle and no sailors standing.

The weather was as windy as that which howls through a haunted house – but most everyone made it into their slips and ready to sip on some witch’s brew by Friday night! We had fang-smacking pumpkin appetizers and pumpkin beer – what else can a sailor need in the way of tricks and treats?

Saturday morning (10ish?) we’ll explore a bit. I am open to suggestions. We can circumnavigate York. We can circumnavigate St. James City. If we are over in Sanibel Bight we can play hide and seek in the Mangroves. We can commit to a long haul and search for the fountain of youth purported to be on Chino. The goal is to justify a hearty lunch at…… Well I am open to suggestions there too. This is our chance to expand our culinary horizons beyond Woody’s. Ragged Ass? Waterfront? Or Woody’s works too. What else is there in the booming metropolis that we have missed? Is there a restaurant in the new Trump Tower? Get your thoughts and preferences in, we’ll pick a winner so we can give them a heads -up that a large scruffy crew will be invading.

On Saturday, the phantom fashion show began – overall the “werewolves” (aka men) stole the show while the “witches” (aka women) watched and snapped photos!

We will do a happy hour reprise Saturday night on a boat to be named later. Head home Sunday. This is CMCSso come and go when you want. Hope to see you out on the water because that is kinda the point…….

The "Name that Tune" contest was provided by Tim and Sue Stier -- the goblins in attendance had an amazing memory of the oldies and goodies and it seemed past Commodore Diane ruled the night! As the witching hour drew near, it was clear that “Trust Me” ran away with best decorated boat! Other boats in the running were Freestyle, Kestrel II, Lazy Susan, Salty Soul, Blank Check, and Gone with the Wind.

Kim & Judy, s/v Trust Me!!!

There was a potluck spread that would raise even spooks from the dead! Popeye the Sailor (Steve Romaine) and the Beautiful Wench (Judy Anderson) snagged first prizes in the costume contest! They barely beat out the hairiest contestant “Mojo”. Best beer award goes to “Good Ass Beer” courtesy of the Nudists on Strike – Glen and Paula Vetter! Ironically, this Rhinelander beer is from Salty Soul’s skipper Jim Slager’s hometown…what does that tell you?

A hair-raising time was had by all! Respookfully – Julie, Barry, Cindy and Steve

CMCS THANKSGIVING CRUISE—2016 NOVEMBER 23-28, 2016 Once again we plan to head North to the Cayo Costa State Park area, where most of us anchor in Pelican Bay and enjoy the Park. This cruise has evolved into a very flexible weekend that can accommodate everyone’s schedule. Some people come for the Thursday dinner. Some come after a Thanksgiving dinner with family. There’s plenty to do at Pelican Bay: exploring in your dinghy or kayak relaxing on your boat or one of several beaches hiking or bicycling around Cayo Costa State Park - remember the $2 daily entrance fee fishing catching up with friends Thanksgiving dinner at Cabbage Key The sun goes down early, so our evening happy hours get moved up to about 4 PM. The usual location is "Dog Beach", or just follow the other dinghies in case we changed our minds. Bring your own beverage of choice. Also, bring a snack to share if that suits your style. We have made arrangements for a Thursday 2 PM CMCS Thanksgiving Dinner at Cabbage Key (you can't cook it as good or at the price offered). Please make your reservations only through our Cruise Leaders by using the very simple CMCS Thanksgiving Cruise RSVP, or calling/texting 239-207-7457. Please, do not call Cabbage Key yourself. Their staff appears to come up with imaginary counts when this happens (happens every year). The price should be about $22 again, and we will send an email blast when Cabbage Key lets us know. (You may want to bring enough cash.) Use our online form: CMCS Thanksgiving Cruise RSVP. Further details, or any unforeseen changes, will be come via email, or via vhf channel 72 once we're out to sea. Glen & Paula Vetter s/v Freestyle email: [email protected] call or text: 239-207-7457

NEW YEARS EVE PARTY CRUISE Fisherman’s Village-Punta Gorda December 26, 2016-January 1, 2017 This cruise is unstructured. Most people work their way up to Pelican Bay on the 28th. Arrive when you can. The cruise is a destination cruise, so only New Years Eve counts for the cruising award. Pelican Bay is a good anchorage and most boats can tuck in if there’s a norther…or go around to School-house Bay (aka hurricane hole). Cayo Costa State Park is a great place to meander around. Please remember that there is a $2/day/person shore fee payable at the honor box or you can pay at the office if you don’t have change. As is our recent custom, we are spending New Years Eve at Fisherman’s Village. We have free use of the boaters lounge from 4-12 or later. Bring snacks for snack hour and a dish to share for Pot Luck. Your hosts (Dan and Carolyn) will provide the meat…spiral cut ham is a possibility. Food set-ups such as knives and forks, paper plates, etc. will be provided. Snack hour generally runs into the Pot Luck Dinner. We begin snacking around 5:00 PM. Serious food comes after that. There is no time frame for drinking! All are welcome and it’s an easy drive up there for the Land Cruisers. There is no charge for the Land Cruisers but they are expected to bring a snack and Pot Luck. The Marina will have a band, snacks, and beer/wine. All are welcome to enjoy the music. There is a very reasonable charge for the food and beverages in Fisherman’s Village. All slips are currently reserved and the marina is currently sold out. If you are one of the 14 boats who made reservations for a slip you are fine. In past years, we have had a waiting list and all got in. No guarantees for this year, but it is certainly worthwhile getting on the waiting list. You can also anchor out if you’d like and use the dinghy dock. Nothing has changed at the marina. The building is as you remember it! Many of the cruisers go up on the 30th and stay 2 nights. Reservations require a credit card and there is a 72 hour prior to reservation cancellation policy. If you cancel within the 72 hours, you will be charged one night’s dockage. If you wish to get on the waiting list, it is imperative that you speak ONLY to Randy Chevalier. If you speak to anyone else, you might not have a reservation! Call (941) 575-3000. If you have any questions other than reservations, feel free to call the cruise leader:, Carolyn Wilson, (239)6998749 or [email protected].
