2010 ANNUAL  REPORT

MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the Cape Ann Museum, as defined in its mission statement, is: to foster an appreciation of the quality and diversity of life on Cape Ann, past and present; to further the knowledge and enjoyment of Cape Ann history and art; to collect and preserve significant information and artifacts; and to encourage community involvement with its programs and holdings. In all its activities, the Museum emphasizes the highest standards of quality.

Foreword A major goal of the Museum’s 2010-2016 Strategic Plan was to increase awareness and This year we laid the groundwork for four important new initiatives that grew out of this goal. appreciation of our resources.

We have begun redesigning our website to make connections to a broader audience. We have researched technologies to digitize the collection to make it more widely available. We have initiated the Fitz Henry Lane Catalogue Raisonné Project to illustrate the significant role Lane plays in the history of American art. And, we have completed the design and permitting for a sculpture park at 26 Pleasant Street, which makes us more visible and accessible to residents, and physically creates a link with Gloucester’s historic City Hall and the Sawyer Free Library to form a downtown cultural campus. All signs are positive. We look forward to reporting on these projects as they progress. Highlights of 2010 Visitation, Membership and Support The Museum welcomed 18,500 visitors last year. They came from Olalla, Washington, Pouyastruc, France and from across the street. They represented every age and race. None of them went away without being amazed, and many of them were transformed into supporters. 2010 was a year of substantial growth in membership

and donations. Two hundred and fifty-eight (258) new members joined the Museum during the year, with membership income increasing by 20% over last year. Our members continue to be very generous. The Annual Appeal exceeded 2009 numbers, and total giving increased by almost 10%. The Museum also expanded grant-writing capacity, resulting in donations from new sources, in particular, the Rogers Family Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Amelia Peabody Charitable Fund. We have noticed a real sense of excitement and pride as our members participate in programming, tour the Museum with friends, and comment on our Facebook entries. We are gratified to know how many of you value the Museum and what it offers to individuals, our communities of Cape Ann, the region and beyond. Special Exhibitions and Programs Realizing that we have multiple audiences, the Museum presents special exhibitions and programs to appeal across a broad range of interests. The exhibitions

and programs are planned to complement each other and designed to represent the historical and the contemporary, to describe the cultures of our communities, and to celebrate the fine arts and the artifacts of the industries that were important to Cape Ann’s development. In 2010, we mounted five major exhibitions and nine smaller installations – more than any other year. The exhibitions showcased objects from the Museum’s own collections and from the holdings of other institutions and private collections. Some of the most noteworthy follow: Surrounded by Water: Clara Wainwright, Quilt Maker, which opened the season, included a quilt made in 2005 by the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives and a recently completed quilt of self-portraits created by Gloucester residents. Accompanying the show was hands-on programming, highlighted by a series of quilting workshops for adults and children. Summer Outward Bound:The Robert L. and Elizabeth French Collection was a grateful celebration of new gifts to the permanent collection by longtime benefactors, Bob and

Libby French. Ars Longa,Vita Brevis, was a nostalgic look back at Rockport artists in the 1930s. A walking tour of the artists’ studios and haunts, a screening of home films from the era, and a panel of friends and children of the artists created a shared appreciation for the art and the times. To Gather Together and Keep these Bonds: Highlights from the Permanent Collection served as a tribute to those who have strengthened the Museum’s collections – either by making gifts of art, objects or archival material or by providing financial support for acquisitions, exhibitions, conservation and care. The exhibition was significant in that it simultaneously offered insight into the evolution of the Museum’s collections and served as a brief history of the Museum. It paid homage to the visionary collectors and Museum leadership of the past, and served as a reminder to all that the Museum is a “collecting institution.” Gallery talks and special events amplified this theme. Content for all programs for families and children, including school trips and tours, was created in conjunction with our special exhibitions, as well. Collections The Museum’s reason for being is its collections. Our primary mission is to collect, care for, and make available the art, history and culture of Cape Ann, which we hold in the public trust. In 2010, the Museum received more than

100 gifts to the collection, from fine and decorative arts to books and manuscripts. Every piece that enters the collection strengthens our ability to tell the story of Cape Ann. Among the many gifts donated, three stand out: a watercolor of Ten Pound Island by Winslow Homer; A Smart Blow, an oil by Lane student Mary Blood Mellen; and, a bronze sculpture of a shoebill stork by Paul Manship. Capital Projects Based on member surveys, and a review by the Board, staff, and the Museum’s Building Committee, we developed a set of building and grounds needs and prioritized them. This information was incorporated into the Strategic Plan. In 2010, we accomplished the following high priority projects: replaced the roof above the 1960s addition to the Museum, and in the process added additional insulation to improve the energy performance of the building; repainted the windows in the reception area and granite gallery; installed shades and film which reduce the amount of UV light entering the galleries in the maritime wing, library/archives, and atrium to better protect the collections; and, refinished the maple stairways and cleaned the carpets. Over the next few years, we plan to undertake additional capital projects to improve stewardship, to more effectively display the collection, and to enhance the visitor experience.

Staff The Museum’s small staff continues to operate like a much larger one - organizing and overseeing an increasing number of programs, expanding the exhibition calendar, and operating the Museum on a daily basis. We aspire to do more. The Strategic Plan recommended adding essential staff over the next three years. In 2010, we combined the Programs and Education Departments. Courtney Richardson assumed the title and duties of Director of Education and Public Programs and the Museum welcomed Elizabeth Browning as Education Assistant. Elizabeth Bergeron joined the curatorial staff as Curatorial Assistant. A gallery monitor was hired to provide staff support on the weekends. Over the past few years, we have been successful in building a strong foundation to support our initiatives. We have recruited board, staff, committee members, docents, and volunteers with specialized skills to assist us in reaching our goals. Continued work on updating and educating our constituency on the Museum’s vision has reinforced a sense of community among all of you who care about the Museum. In the coming year, we look to you not just for your support, but also for your participation in the life of the Museum. It is your Museum. John Cunningham, President Ronda Faloon, Director

Educational Programming The Museum’s annual program calendar is designed to complement its collections and special exhibitions. Lectures from visiting scholars and local historians, gallery talks, walking tours, musical performances, and more, offer deeper insight into the art, history and culture of Cape Ann, and engage audiences of all ages.

Education Assistant Liza Browning gives Pathways students, aged 3-5, an overview of the fisheries industry beginning with the incredible adventure of doryman Howard Blackburn. This lesson was offered as part of the Young at Art for Head Start Program sponsored by the McCarthy Family Foundation and New England BioLabs. The Museum is committed to developing collaborative programs in partnership with local educational, cultural and civic organizations. This year’s list includes: American History and Music Project, Beauport/Historic New England, Cape Ann Public Schools, Cape Ann Community Cinema, Charles Olson Society, Escapes North/North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, Essex County Greenbelt, Essex LINCS, Essex National Heritage Commission, Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Gloucester City Hall, Gloucester Committee for the Arts, Gloucester Education Foundation, Gloucester Historical Commission, Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center, Manchester Arts Festival, Montserrat College of Art, National Parks Service: Salem, Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Pathways for Children, Sargent House Museum, Schooner Adventure, seARTS, Rockport Art Association, Rockport Music, Rocky Neck Art Colony, and Wellspring Cape Ann Families.

In 2010, program attendance and the number of programs offered to the public increased. More than 5,200 people attended the 50 programs offered. Our ever-ready docents led 235 tours, introducing 1,475 visitors to the Museum and its collections. 2010 marked the 300th anniversary of the WhiteEllery House. The year-long anniversary celebration featured: lectures presented by the Museum’s Curator Martha Oaks and Librarian/Archivist Stephanie Buck, vernacular architecture scholar J. Ritchie Garrison, and American furniture specialist, Robert Trent; a theatrical performance; a birthday party; a Tavern Night; and, on-site contemporary art installations. Community was the focus this year as was evident in Clara Wainwright’s quilt making workshops and well-attended gallery talks. We celebrated the Gloucester’s Portuguese Community with a walking tour of the neighborhood, a panel discussion, and food tasting. Other fully subscribed walking tours took us on a nostalgic walk through downtown Rockport as part of the Rockport Artists in the 1930s exhibition program and to West Gloucester’s Great Ledge during the Presence/Absence exhibition of the work of

Bruce Herman. Concerts in the courtyard continue to draw record crowds. Finally, the Centennial Celebration of Gloucester Poet Charles Olson was an incredible community collaboration. Youth and Family Programs In 2010, more than 3,500 children and families participated in more than 120 programs for young people offered by the Museum. Highlights included: Memorable Saturday Showcase events sponsored by the Goldhirsh Foundation; Cape Ann Educators Open House and teacher workshops; readings by local authors Pat Lowery Collins and Henry Ferrini; Young at Art

for Head Start with Cape Ann’s Pathways for Children, sponsored by New England BioLabs and the McCarthy Family Foundation; Morning at the Museum summer program sponsored by the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation; visits from local and international students, preschool-aged through college; participation in the Gloucester Public Schools Arts Festival, Essex Elementary Schools Messy Art Night, Cape Ann Family Fun Fair, Manchester Arts Festival, and Cape Ann Farmers’ Market; and the outstanding student artwork on display at the Museum throughout the year presented by more than 30 local schools.

Art historian William Trayes offers insight into Rockport in the 1930s during a walking tour for the Museum’s docents.

The Museum hosted a number of special events for members and friends in 2010: An evening program to honor Robert and Elizabeth French and their family for their gifts to the collection; a pre-exhibition opening for Rockport Artists of the 1930s; The Captain’s Party, the Museum’s annual fundraising gala was held in August this year, celebrated with a lively island theme; a program to acknowledge recent donors on the advent of the opening of To Gather Together to Keep These Bonds: Highlights from the Permanent Collection; The Fitz Henry Lane Society’s annual October Art Excursion to New Haven, CT; and the Women’s 3rd Annual Luncheon held in December.

More than 240 women filled the upstairs galleries of the Museum at the 3rd Annual Women’s Luncheon. Guest speaker Lee Natti, children’s book author and Folly Cove Designer, enchants the crowd.

The Museum makes every effort to ensure that our lists are complete and accurate. If you believe there may be an error or an omission, please notify us.
