School Breakfast Program 400th School Celebration! Foodbank WA’s School Breakfast Program commenced in 2001 in response to concerns that school children were attending school hungry. Now in its 13th year, the Program has reached a major milestone – the registration of 400 schools in a calendar year! Kinross Primary School – the official 400th school – recently hosted a breakfast event to celebrate this milestone and to thank School Breakfast Program funders and partners for their financial and in-kind support. Special guests included the Honourable Peter Collier MLC (Minister for Education), and representatives from the Departments of Health, Education and Regional Development, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Harvey Fresh and Crown. Sporting stars Damian Martin (Perth Wildcats) and Shannon Hurn (West Coast Eagles) also attended to show their support and sign autographs for students.

(Right to Left): The Hon. Peter Collier MLC (Minister for Education), Edward de Ruiter (Principal, Kinross Primary School), and Greg Hebble (CEO, Foodbank WA)

The formalities commenced once the school-bell rang, with a heart-warming Welcome to Country by Ingrid Cumming of Kart Koort Wiern (Head Heart Spirit). Attendees heard from the Hon. Peter Collier (Minister for Education), Greg Hebble (Foodbank WA) and Edward de Ruiter (Principal). Kinross Primary School was presented a special ‘400th SBP school’ certificate.

Adolescent Food & Cooking Program Foodbank WA, in partnership with Diabetes WA, are pleased to be able to offer our new Adolescent Food Literacy and Cooking program, called UCook. UCook is designed specifically for disadvantaged youth aged 1216 years old (up to 18 years old if not in the workforce) to be a fun and interactive way to learn about healthy eating and develop practical cooking skills. Organisations can run a program of 3-6 sessions, as an after school program, school holiday program or as an in-school program, whatever suits. Each session is made up of interactive nutrition education activities and the youth preparing healthy, tasty dishes, which are brought together by everyone and eaten as a shared meal for the group. Thanks to funding from the WA Department of Health we are able to provide these programs free of charge. For more information about UCook, or to make a booking, please contact Rachel Davidson on 9463 3219 or via email [email protected] One of the tasty recipes in the UCook Program! Planning Underway for new Foodbank Warehouse Planning for Foodbank WA’s new central warehouse is taking shape. Located at Perth Airport, the new facility will be the hub for food security throughout WA. General Manager of Operations, Colin Woodward, said the move to a new, purpose built facility would enable Foodbank WA to better meet the needs of agency partners, community groups and schools. Foodbank WA Office, 3D Perspective (Source: Doepel Marsh Architects)

“This is a truly exciting time for Foodbank WA,” Colin said. “This is the most important project in Foodbank WA’s history and it will provide great support for Western Australians in need and for the agencies providing them with food assistance.” The construction is forecast for completion in late 2014 and will streamline Foodbank WA’s Healthy Food for All® initiatives – in particular, the School Breakfast Program and Food Sensations®. Apart from being a specialised food distribution centre, the new warehouse will further reduce Foodbank WA’s carbon footprint. Natural lighting, improved waste handling and energy efficient chillers are included in the design. “One of the first features we planned was a training kitchen for Food Sensations®. This will be an innovative and interactive learning centre. Foodbank WA is committed to healthy eating. Providing a hands-on kitchen in a class room environment promises to be a popular and exciting experience for participants.” In addition, the new warehouse will also feature dedicated storage and packing facilities for the School Breakfast Program. 2013 Issue 4: Term 4, Page 3

Food Sensations® A-Peel-ing to the Mandurah Community Food Sensations® in Schools Term 3 in the Peel area was busy with local primary schools, including Riverside PS and North Dandalup PS, taking the opportunity to book in early and participate in Food Sensations® in Schools sessions. Students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience preparing healthy recipes and trying new foods, each taking home a recipe book to share with their families.

Food Sensations® Adult Food Literacy Adult Food Sensations® sessions were offered at the Billy Dower Youth Centre, Waratah Community Church, Ac-cents, Greenfields Community Centre, Challenger TAFE and Silver Chain. Over 80 participants enjoyed learning to prepare nutritious, low cost recipes and picked up new ideas on preparing healthy lunchboxes. Tying in with the national Live Lighter campaign, the sugar content in drinks was the most popular activity, with most people astonished at the number of teaspoons of sugar in drinks, and many vowing to make immediate changes to their soft drink habits. Great news! As the weather warms up and Christmas approaches, Term 4 Food Sensations Adult workshops in Peel will focus on ways to make our social snacks, BBQs and Christmas celebrations healthier. With the support of the City of Mandurah’s’ Healthy Community Initiative, these workshops are free for adults to attend at the following venues: LOCATION DAY DATE TIME Mandurah Central Monday Nov 11, 18, 25 10am – 12.30pm Nov 13, 20, 27 Wannanup – South Wednesday 10am – 12.30pm Dec 4 Nov 28 Greenfields Thursday 10am – 1pm Dec 5

Free Sports Equipment for Schools Interested in free sports equipment for your school? Does your school cater for students in years 4 through 7? School Breakfast Program registration entitles your school to access free sports equipment through Foodbank WA’s Choose to Move physical activity initiative! The aim of Choose to Move is to encourage students in years 4 to 7 to be more physically active. The initiative is flexible in its implementation and allows schools to use the equipment in a number of ways: • students can use the sports equipment for unstructured play – for example at recess and lunch times or before school at the breakfast club • the equipment can be utilised by teachers with the Department of Education Resource – FUNdamental Games Strategies – for structured physical activity lessons • used to play games from the Yulunga Traditional Indigenous Games resource (included in the kit). • some schools use the equipment for morning fitness or class physical activity lessons. Sporting equipment packs include: basketballs, markers, tennis balls, AFL, footballs, bean bags, soccer balls, cricket sets, dodge balls, netballs, Frisbees, touch flag belts and ball pumps packed in a quality sports bag. We are currently taking expressions of interest for the 2014 round of Choose to Move – provision of equipment will be on a ‘first in’ first served’ basis. THE MORNING TOAST – TERM 4, 2013

Vietnamese Rolls

Vietnamese Rolls are a great way to include a variety of salad veggies in your diet. Cool and refreshing, they are a perfect summer snack or addition to any meal!

Serves: 4 (each recipe makes 12 rolls) Preparation time: 30 minutes

Ingredients (Chicken Version)

12 rice paper rounds (22cm) 50g packet rice vermicelli noodles 150g snow peas, ends removed 1 medium avocado, peeled and stoned, sliced lengthways 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded 1/3 cup mint leaves Equipment: 1/3 cup coriander leaves Knife 1 large carrot, peeled and grated Strainer Sweet chilli sauce, to serve Grater

Ingredients (Vegetarian Version)

Peeler Chopping board Heatproof bowl Measuring cups Small saucepan

12 rice paper rounds (22cm) 3/4 cup shredded iceberg lettuce 1 cup bean sprouts, trimmed 1 small carrot, peeled and grated 1 small cucumber, peeled, cut into ribbons 1 medium avocado, peeled and stoned, sliced lengthways Sweet chilli sauce, to serve

Method: To prepare vermicelli and snow peas (if required): 1. Wash your hands - you are now ready to cook! 2. Place noodles in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water and let stand for 5 minutes. 3. Drain and set aside. Meanwhile, cook snow peas in a small saucepan of boiling water for 1 minute. Refresh under cold running water and drain well.

Tips and Variations! •

Don’t like chicken? Try substituting with fish, prawns, or meat strips.

Instead of sweet chilli sauce, create your own dipping sauce! Combine 1/4 cup reduced-salt soy sauce, 1 teaspoon caster sugar, and 4cm piece of fresh ginger (grated) in a bowl and stir.

Any fresh salad veggie can be used in Vietnamese rolls – you are limited only by your imagination!

4. Slice snow peas lengthways.

To make rolls: 1. Soak the rice paper in warm water (one sheet at a time) until just softened. Remove the sheet from the bowl and place on a plate. 2. Place equal portions of filling along one edge of the sheet. 3. Fold in sides of rice paper and roll up, pressing edge to seal. 4. Repeat with remaining rice paper sheets and ingredients. 5. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

Regional Strategy: Partnering our Way across WA! The regional team has worked with some outstanding organisations in some incredible locations in 2013, with partnerships playing an integral role in the Regional Strategy. Not only do they enable our Nutritionists to work with local community members and service providers to identify key food issues, topical nutrition themes and help us to narrow down our locations each year, they also provide opportunities to work with key staff and community on the ground, strengthening relationships and developing better ways of working in collaboration. Highlights include travel to: • Beverley, Brookton, Kondinin and Corrigin with the WA Country Health Service’s (WACHS) Wheatbelt Population Health Unit and Wheatbelt GP Network; • Marble Bar and Nullagine with Fair Game WA and WACHS Pilbara PHU; • Punmu and Kunawaritji communities in partnership with WACHS Pilbara PHU and Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation; • Warralong community and Hedland with WACHS Pilbara PHU; • Wangkatjungka and Yakanarra communities with the WACHS Kimberley PHU and Cancer Council WA; • Mullewa with WA School Canteens Association; • Newman and Jigalong community with Fair Game and World Vision Australia; and • Warburton community for the Desert Dust Up event with Diabetes WA, NPY Women’s Council and Ngaanyatjarra Health Service. Foodbank WA would like to thank the organisations and individuals who have provided us with support, advice and companionship on our travels!

Desert Dust Up – Warburton Written by Asha Singh, Diabetes WA

In September 2013 Diabetes WA was thrilled to be invited to attend the Desert Dust Up event in Warburton, in partnership with Foodbank WA. This was our first trip to a community in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, however we were well looked after by the experienced Foodbank WA staff and staff from the Ngaanyatjarra Health Service and NPY Women’s Council. Thanks to Foodbank WA and their willingness to work in partnership, together we were able to deliver 18 cooking and nutrition/diabetes workshops throughout the event. Unfortunately type 2 diabetes is two to three times more common in Aboriginal people than in non Aboriginal people, so opportunities to spread prevention messages to Aboriginal communities through events such as Desert Dust Up are essential to our work! We would like to thank the Regional Strategy team and the Desert Dust Up event organizers for inviting us to be a part of this great event. We are looking forward to next year!

Healthy Food for All® Sponsor Focus! Harvey Fresh A wholly WA-owned company, Harvey Fresh is a long term supporter of the School Breakfast Program. School Breakfast Program schools are often located in areas where access to affordable, quality fresh produce is a major concern. For students in these areas, UHT 100% unsweetened juice represents the difference between getting some essential vitamins and minerals, and missing out completely. Harvey Fresh’s ongoing contribution of 30 pallets of product (32,400 litres, valued at over $47,000) allows Foodbank to continue this essential component of the Program for eligible remote schools.

Perth Market Authority Students across the metropolitan area have been reaping the fresh rewards of Perth Market Authority’s support of the School Breakfast Program and Food Sensations® in Schools. A staunch supporter of Foodbank WA for a number of years, Market City provided a total of $10,000 dedicated to the supply of fruit for the School Breakfast Program, and fresh produce for Food Sensations® in Schools sessions for the 2012/13 financial year.
