FMCC Summer Academy 2016 Class Descriptions Week 1: July 11-15

Grades 3-5

Morning session (9:00-12:00)

Cosmetology Camp This is a true hands-on experience for the student who has ever thought about a career in cosmetology. Learn the basic hairstyle techniques and current trends. Every day, students will learn a new technique including braiding, extensions, nail art, facials and updos. By the end of the week students will have created their own portfolio to share with family and friends. Instructor: Julie Mead Photography Exploration This class is for students interested in exploring the field of photography. Students will participate in a wide range of activities, such as creating frames from recycled materials to exploring the campus by taking photos. The class will go over functions of the camera with fun techniques to take interesting pictures. *Note* Students are encouraged to bring a camera from home, or a device with a camera such as a phone or tablet. A camera will be provided if the student does not have access to one. Instructor: Brittani Hanson Ultimate Sports Week! This high energy class will bring students outside to explore different sports. Not only will there be time working on skills, but also fun, unique activities. It is great for students ready for an active class! Instructor: Alex Santiago Multicultural Art Travel around the world of art at FM this summer. By the end of this busy week, students will have created a variety of art projects, such as African masks, Mexican Oaxaca sculptures, and Egyptian amulets, and have a great portfolio to show friends and

family. The instructor is a middle school art teacher with over 30 years of experience in commercial art and illustration. Instructor: Michelle Egelston American Sign Language Sign language is a visual gestural language that is totally different from English, or from any other language students may know. Learn about facial expression, grammar, and vocabulary along with the alphabet and numbers. Students will be able to introduce themselves and tell others about them, all through sign language! Instructor is deaf and has extensive experience working with children. Instructor: Jacob Veeder

Week 1: July 11-15

Grades 3-5

Afternoon session (1:00-4:00)

Garden Party Arts Students will have the opportunity to work on unique art projects, such as glass art, sun catchers, making a beach in a jar, making their own miniature garden, and even painting with chocolate! This art class is all about building self-esteem through completing unique art projects. The skills developed in this class can be used later as an outlet for creativity. Instructor: Beth Spraggs American Ninja Warrior This class will allow students to compete individually and in teams on an obstacle course! The high energy instructor will incorporate team building activities. Students will work on problem solving skills, develop special awareness, and work on personal goals. Instructor: Brittani Hanson Video Game Design Video Game Design: Students will learn how to develop their own video games! This class will use video game creation software to put their ideas into virtual reality. This is a hands on computer based course, where students will be able to use the skills they developed with the software in the future. Instructor: Devin Wemple

Ultimate Fun Week This class is all about exploring a wide range of topics with high energy activities. As each day of the class will have a different topic, students will not get bored. There will be exciting activities, such as experimenting with which soda will have the best reaction with Mentos, to participating in a mini Olympics! Instructor: Alex Santiago

Special FX Creature One of the most important components of fantasy and horror films is designing the creature! Using the creative process, students will conceptualize their creature, consider the world it dwells in, how it adapts to its environment, and what physical qualities help it survive in such a place. From a sketch to a sculpture to painting, students will create a creature with distinct characteristics. This class has no boundaries to what the imagination can come up with, one can truly bring their dreams or nightmares to life! Instructor: Devin Wemple Phreekshow School of Magic The Phreekshow School of Magic & Illusion is a very interactive, hands-on form of learning where students will be taught the rules in magic, terms used in magic, several magic tricks and illusions, as well as how to perform them. Learn how to present the tricks, as well as how to use showmanship to make your tricks effective. At the end of the course, parents/guardians will be invited to see what you’ve learned throughout the course in a live spectacle where students will perform in their own show to amaze and bewilder. Each student will also be given a Phreekshow Productions Certificate of Completion. Instructor has been practicing magic for over 15 years. Instructor: Jak Creatlatch Hands On Tech This class uses a hands-on approach to create technician-level enthusiasm for topics in STEM! Students will utilize basic principles with the design process to put exciting projects to life, such as the ‘hands-on electrical lab’! Students will even use FM’s automation room and robot, a great opportunity. It is a week of pushing the limits with

exciting projects and is geared for students who enjoy technology and thrive on handson project based work. Instructor: Jeremy Spraggs

Afternoon session (1:00-4:00)

Digital Story Telling As we are all surrounded by stories, whether it is at school during lunch or a car ride home. Stories are the oldest form of communication and have remained through time. This class will allow students to bring stories to life through a narrative with images made from a creative writing piece. Students will gain a better understanding of how stories are put together and edit the movies on basic editing software. Instructor: Nicholas Sanders The Erie Canal and Role of Public History By looking back at the past we can develop a better understanding of who we are today! Through the emergence of social media and the internet, more people can discover new information. Students will be able learn the historical meaning of five objects from home as well as use these new ways of research to deepen their understanding of topic in a way a public historian would. There will also be role playing for a public historian of the future! Instructor: David Brooks Multicultural Art Week Travel around the world of art at FM this summer. Students will build on their creative thinking skills as they are given various scenarios that require creative thinking and team work. Students will be exposed to

science, math and a bit of magic as they try to figure out both logically and creatively the solution to various problems. This will be a very hands on session as students build, and design possible solutions and explore the physical world around them. Instructor: David Floyd

Junior Chefs This class is for students who love to play around in the kitchen. Learn how to make delicious foods from scratch using a professional facility at HFM-BOCES. Students will get a wide range of experiences this week from making homemade dough to decorating cupcakes. Yum! Instructor: Rebecca Skretkowicz Ultimate Sports Week! This high energy class will bring students outside to explore different sports. Not only will there be time working on skills, but also fun activities. It is great for students ready for an active class! Instructor: Alex Santiago Introduction to Acting Students who are interested in exploring their dramatic side and developing acting skills will love this class. There are a variety of acting games that help students think on their feet and creatively. Throughout the week the students work on a performance to show their friends and family on the final day. Sign language is a visual gestural language that is totally different from English, or from any other language you may know. Learn about facial expression, grammar, and vocabulary and be able to sign your favorite songs with fellow friends. You’ll learn to sign the alphabet and numbers and you will be able to introduce yourself and tell others about yourself, all through sign language. Fencing With an instructor who has been ranked as high as fourth in the country, this class will give students a unique opportunity to learn a new sport and develop fencing skills. Fencing can be done for exercise as well as competition. All special equipment is supplied, students need clothes and shoes they can move around in and covers their legs. Instructor: Michael McDarby Photography Exploration This class is for students interested in exploring the field of photography. Students will do a wide range of activities, such as creating frames from recycled materials to exploring the campus by taking photos. Instructor: Brittani Hanson Crafting with Nature This class focuses on science and nature as students learn how to take items found in nature and turn them into creative art pieces. Through creating mandalas, rock art, prints, rubbings, and mosaics, students will learn how to look at everyday objects in a new way. Students will be able to take home their unique pieces of art!
