Greetings Flyballers When I started as editor of the Flyball Record just a year ago, Jean M eeking told me I’d need to fill twenty-eight pages. However, I found I had enough material to fill thirty-two and the only issue to have the twenty-eight pages was February this year. 2005 has seen a big increase in the number of tournaments available and this has resulted in this ‘bumper issue’ of thirty-six pages. The ‘holiday week’ at Tai Lawr, Anglesey created a ‘rash’ of items, all of which show what a fun filled week everyone enjoyed, despite the extra-bad weather mid week! Following last year’s successful Summer Championship, it was more difficult for teams to ‘qualify’ for inclusion this year and there were some familiar names missing. Once again the racing was very close and the teams that won their respective divisions had to work hard to do so. It has been great to be able go to some new venues, plus tournaments organised by ‘first time’ teams. We have been spoilt for choice with some weekends having three tournaments to choose from. The diary also shows that we will be able to go to more tournaments during the ‘off’ season. One indoor tournament will even be run on grass turf! Flyball is certainly growing. This has of course created extra work for our Stats Officers, who are hard pressed to keep up with the web site. If there are mistakes in a tournament’s paper work, including the time sheets filled in by team captains, this needs to be checked before going onto the web. As usual, my thanks go to all the contributors to the Record. Any items I need to ‘hold over’ are kept for inclusion later. I have one of my own I’ve held onto since last November! It’s still topical so it will wait its turn. Please make sure you include FR in your subject line when e-mailing otherwise, if it’s put into my bulk folder, I might delete it by accident. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy Flyballing New Year. Ed.

NELLIE’’S BRUSH WITH THE CHESHIRE SET First of all she visited Ron – who decided that as it was a very hot day, she might enjoy a dip! Guess what? … we’ve got Nellie! from those in the Pink The poor girl looks shattered, a rest is needed, we think. Sid and Clint did their duty – took her on all their jaunts Plied her with chips and beer in all their regular haunts. So a move to a more uptown kind of place - A career with the forces will put a smile on her face. But wait… who decided to see if she’d float? Her packing’s for protection, Ron – it’s not a boat! So send in the sub to recover our Nellie, who’s Had an encounter that’s damp, dark and smelly. But once on the shore she’s dried, cleaned and fed The poor girl’s been frightened quite out of her head So, Ron – you’ve been warned to be nice to our guest ‘cos anymore tricks, you’ll be strung up - by your vest!!

Then Rob and Jo were granted the honour of her company. M y first brush with water wasn’t that good And I came away all covered in mud But never one to be put off I soon became a fellow toff Premieres, parties – I’ve been to them all You may have not seen me, I’m really quite small A taste for the good life I have had And life Up North isn’t really so bad But I had to not stay too long in one place Someone might actually learn to like my face So, whayhay I’ve been away at sea With those chaps from the Royal Navy I’ve heard some things and seen some sights I’ve slept all days and partied all nights The rum has helped me have some fun I’m really glad not to have been won! I’ve met the Queen – she was quite good But wouldn’t keep me, as one should So once again I said goodbye Another team I want to try I will be hidden amongst your stuff But finding me won’t be too tough But, who to go with? And which colour? Does blue suit? - Or a shade duller? Oh decisions, decisions I’m all of a fluster Whoever I go to – it’s tough luck Buster!! Rob & Jo Wilson (Cheshire Set)

She’s on her travels again, but still in the North.

I was asked some time ago by Ron to Head Judge this Tournament, and boy was I looked after, premium camping space for the Grasshoppers within a short distance of the ring. The weather this particular weekend was absolutely scorching, but what a brilliant idea to have a hose pipe with a mist attachment to spray the dogs when they came out of the ring, followed by diving into the shell shaped baths. The handlers appreciated it too. Young Jacob from the Wagtails was being his usual helpful self, and offering to mist down everyone’s dog as well as keeping the water vessels and baths full. I was asked to Judge Division Seven on the Saturday, the first division to run after dog measuring. The Podlers went NFC immediately, with a dog that preferred the balls of the other teams and chasing the opposition dogs. Perhaps more practice was needed in the Starter Division, but you never know until you try. The racing got off to a smooth start and by the halfway mark; the Sherwood M errydogs were in the lead, followed by the Whiterose Bushytails. Les Chapman’s Fylde Surfers found it hard going to beat the NFC team, and either kept getting lights, or his dog Rigsby would not perform. Second period and the dogs came out a little slower with the heat of the day, and that led to some close five leg races. There were no incidents of note and the last race between the M errydogs and the Bushytails was closer than the 3 – 0 score line suggested. The M errydogs were unlucky with an interference by their last dog which stopped them from winning the last leg. A one-minute’s silence was held prior to the presentations on Saturday in respect of the many lives lost in the London bombings. There were silver plates of various sizes given out for the first, second and third places in the divisions, and excellent baskets of grapes, wine, cheese and biscuits for the Judges. Well done to the Cheshire Set for another well organised tournament with that little bit extra, and not forgetting our Vera who as always worked tirelessly in the stats awning. We all look forward to your events next year. Howard Campbell (Greetland Grasshoppers) 4

It was a glorious weekend with the Sunday being even hotter than the Saturday. Despite the heat, the teams managed some very close and exciting racing. The first three positions went by seed with the Barkshire Bandits triumphant as divisional winners having only lost one heat all day. Nuneaton Flyers (sixth seed) had an excellent day being the only team to upset the apple cart. They beat the fourth and fifth seeds (Barkshire Bullets & M olten M arvels) and took the second and third seeds (M aple Leafs & M olten M agnets) to five heats, and were the team that achieved that one heat against ‘the Bandits’. Thanks to all the teams for a pleasant and enjoyable day’s racing. Robert Henshall (Bristol Ball-istics)

Judges Report Division Three This was the first time I had judged and having some very experienced teams was daunting in itself. There were enough knowledgeable people there to shout at me when I went wrong which, inevitably, I did. But thankfully everyone understood and bore with me. I did try and blow the whistle louder, but how do you do that when your mouth is dry with fear? M y congratulations and thanks to all the teams that took part, the Cheshire Set, M olten M etals and M unsters, Racing Herts and Podsters. Also thanks go to the ring parties who kept a very good eye on me. Next time, if there is one, I will try harder. Val Stevens (Wolf Pack)

Sideline Satch! One day at M anchester Dogs’ Home A couple looked at me I lifted my head and wagged my tail Now I’m as happy as can be. For they took me home to Whitefield Gave me lots of love and treats They have a little boy called Jon And I nick all his sweets. Now I do this thing called flyball It gives us such a buzz M y nickname though is Sideline Satch And now I’ll tell you why. I’m not the most reliable dog I often drop the ball I sometimes run off round the ring And won’t come back to call. But when I’ve got my head on And focus on the game I’m ready, ready, ready To run straight down the lane. I can jump the hurdles And I can fetch the ball To screams of “hold it, hold it” I can beat them all. It took lots of months of practice And understanding from the team But now I’ve finally got there I’m a Flyball Dog it seems. So I’d just like to say… Thank you to my human pals And thank you to the rest Thank you to Flying Colours You simply are the best! Love ‘ n’ licks S atch F.D. (Flying Colours)

DIRTY DEEDS IN TYN TOWYN Sorting out our work rota for Anglesey, left Buttons, our spring chicken 17 year old cross dingo, as the only one out of our six dogs who wasn’t racing, so she was voted security guard. She would stay at the caravan pretending to be very old and a bit senile while all the time, like a coiled spring, ready to leap into action to protect us and ours. So really what follows is all Button’s fault. We arrived at Tai Lawr on Saturday and quickly settled in for our flyball fun holiday and it wasn’t until Sunday morning that things went awry. Buttons must have slept heavily that night! Someone had KIDNAPPED our M olten M agnets’ Flag and replaced it with a rude version of our lovely M agnets’ with the initials S.B.S. on it. (Someone had gone to a lot of trouble). While still staggering from the shock of this dastardly deed we found our first message. The RANS OM DEMANDS were to be found in a rucksack behind the Elsan point. In the rucksack we were invited to “play the game” and to have any chance of getting our precious flag back we were to fly the replacement flag all week and we had to send a text message to a mobile number. The reply came and told us to look for a message in a bottle hidden somewhere by the river. During the afternoon (between racing) we gathered the team and headed off to the river bank. We quickly elected M atthew to search the bottom of the river, but just before we threw him in, the bottle was found hidden behind a post, and triumphantly we returned to the field to discover lots of words and phrases. The FIRS T TAS K sent to us on the M onday was for Val to say “ Uncle Joe’s M int Balls” during her Judging presentation at the end of racing. We put our heads together and with the help of a mobile phone and Steve’s friend on the Internet soon had the potted history of mint balls and the Chorus of M ike Harding’s famous song. So, at the presentation for Starters Division C, Val proceeded to elaborate and educate everyone on the industries of Wigan and were treated to the massed voices of the M agnets singing the ‘M int Ball’ song. (The flag brigands were not impressed. When the next message came we were berated for “going over the top”.) Our S ECOND TAS K was carried out at the barbeque. Steve had to lead us in a conga around the camping field. For some reason (possibly alcohol related) our normal close teamwork fell apart. Just after Steve asked the DJ to announce a conga race open to all, they played “Is this the way to Amarillo?” which got us on our feet conga-ing all over the place. We just had time for an exhausted drink and we were off again for the conga race! A bit of a fiasco really. Then, shock, horror, the M aple Leafs admitted to previous flag messing action and admitted, as the S.B.S. Southern Branch they were guilty of turning our flag upside down at two previous Tournaments but were denying all knowledge of the current activities. M ore shock, horror, the active S.B.S. (Northern Branch) told us we had broken the rules by letting others know of our task and we would pay dearly. Emotions were mixed, some were scared, others were livid, but slowly one feeling emerged, REVENGE!! Just one tiny question, revenge on whom? Possibly answered by the alcohol, we didn’t care! – We’d nick the Cheshire S et’s flag! A little more Dutch courage while we waited for the witching hour (1.00am), then Steve, Neil & M atthew, dressed in their blackest garb and armed with a very noisy night sight, set off on their escapade. The Cheshire Set’s flag was well secured to the flagpole, so the whole caboodle was brought back to M agnets’ HQ, where the rest of the team swapped the Cheshire flag for a Skull & Crossbones and in true commando style it was taken back to the Cheshire Set’s camp and successfully erected. Tuesday was quiet, no messages, just leaving us to wonder who our Flagnappers were? On Wednesday we were told to swap a Welsh Flag for a St George’s Flag. We were in luck here, a certain member of the Pods (who should have known better) had made a bit of a mess of putting their flag up (I won’t mention her name here as it’s mentioned a little later) so Peter was very happy when we offered to sort the flag out for him. Our flag bandits hadn’t set a time so while everyone was enthralled at the day’s presentation we swapped the tournament’s Welsh Dragon for the flag of St George. 10

Thursday was a day of peace (from the Kidnappers that is), we were busy keeping up with the rain, bailing out Steve’s tent, finding interesting things to do with bent gazebo frames and seeing how many gallons of water we could store in Linda and M atthew’s awning. All accompanied by the strong whiff of damp dog. Once again, late at night (after a few bevvies, of course) the M agnet’s marauders ventured out armed with a box of eye patches! They were left, with instructions, at the Cheshire Set camp. They were told to wear these additions to their team uniforms and when racing they must say “Pieces of Eight”, “Pieces of Eight” each time they won a leg and “Oh Agh Jim Lad” when they lost. All credit to them they played their parts well and even dressed in pirates’ headgear. To make a fun day of racing even funnier, our tasks from the Flagnappers were to wear our M agnet shirts back to front and blow raspberries at the Judge every time we were asked if we were ready to race. Poor M arguerite didn’t quite know what to do about our rudeness. By this time everyone at the show was getting used to us doing strange things, and like all grapevines, speculation was rife! During Friday evening, we were given a treasure hunt to lead us to our Flag and under the watchful eye of the Flagnappers and the rest of the campsite we set out on the trail. The hunt was based on a set of clues in Welsh. Little did the Flagnappers know that Welsh is Gwen’s first language so that was ever so easy, whereas the first clue by text message most definitely wasn’t. We started by the “entrance to the tournament.” After nearly an hour, several heated discussions as to which entrance and nearly demolishing Peter’s wall stone by stone we found the next clue. Luckily this had sharpened our skills and the other Welsh clues were fairly easy and our flag was soon returned to it’s Flagpole looking none the worse for whatever horrible ordeals it had endured during it’s time as a hostage. Later that night our marauding team sneaked out again and returned the Welsh Dragon to it’s rightful place on the Tournament Flagpole and at the same time slipped the Cheshire Set’s flag up the pole too, they did look nice fluttering together. On Saturday we flew all four flags on the Tournament flagpole. The Welsh Flag, the English Flag, the M olten M agnets’ Flag and the Cheshire Set Flag. On behalf of the M olten M agnets I would like to thank the S.B.S. (Northern Branch) for the fun we had during Anglesey week. It not only kept us entertained but also many other Flyballers as they tried to guess what was going on. Almost everyone went around grinning like Cheshire Cats.

A few points arising from the Committee Meeting held on 2 nd October 2005

History of the Association Wayne is still awaiting information from his contacts. Junior Handler/Box Loader Award This has been difficult to calculate as many of the sheets have been filled out incorrectly. There will be one award for handler and box loader combined in two different age ranges. This will be a shield based on the same style as the other awards, with a smaller replica for the junior to keep. Disciplinary Rules Howard has produced some guidelines for Tournament Organisers benefit. There will be some extra forms available shortly and will be issued to all Team Captains, Area Reps and Head Judges. S tatistics Co-ordinator There had been a hold up due to the Summer Championship but now things are getting back on track. Some forms are still not being filled out correctly, often by the same teams. This could lead to teams not being allocated their points. There are still some problems which need sorting out on the computer. S how S ecretary It was agreed that all shows whether limited or open should have a closing date of twenty-eight days before the tournament. It was agreed that an extra line be inserted into the rule book to read ‘At the closing date the Tournament Organiser must appoint a head judge; if this is not possible they must contact the BFA immediately.’ S ecretary’s Correspondence Applications for head judge status had been received before the last issue of the Flyball Record. Alison Harrison, M arguerite Fleming and Alan Brazukas were approved as head judges. Membership S ecretary The total membership as of 27th September is 1162, teams for schedules is now 84. BFA Lights Following problems with the new lights, they are being returned to M artin Pollard for rigorous testing over the winter. Proposals for the AGM Proposals in future will have to be sent directly to the secretary either in writing or by e-mail. Fouling in the ring As this causes inconsistency when judging it was decided to delete the rule. Discussion Board There has been some abuse of this facility. The committee are looking into a possible amendment so that only registered users will be allowed access to certain parts of the web. Head Judges Rule 5.4(g) will be deleted until the review has been agreed. S ubmitted times Any declared times must be 1 second slower than the team’s seeded time. If a team submitted a time faster than their seed time, the breakout rule would not apply. European Championships 2007 Wayne and Penny are trying to arrange these Championships for 2007. The Committee is enthusiastic and agreed that all competitors would compete under International rules, but are awaiting more details.

ANG LESEY JULY 20 0 5. A race report that tells you ‘now’t’ What could be worse? A race report that tells you ‘now’t’ But written all in verse! Friday

Friday saw a Fylde exodus With vehicles of every kind Heading toward a field in Anglesey A PODS event to find

Saturday : Coasters

Won four of five races – joint first then of three, But in the three way run off, it was just not meant to be. So the rosette said third but this did not reflect, All the skill and effort, to the Coasters then respect. Harvey followed Emma, but he wasn’t too impressed He turned around and growled a bit and tried to nip her chest! You couldn’t say this was the Surfers day although they had fun its true, Their rosette wasn’t a first – “but who cares” was the cry, From Emma & Harvey & Jed & Boo. The Fylde Roller Coasters was their name, And the ups outweighed the downs in this game. M egan, Tilly and Jess said, “hey – there’s no netting here, Emerys said, “this is proper Flyball – don’t panic my dears”

Surfers

Roller Coasters

Lost three and only one won, a shaky start to their day, But the next four races were straight wins all the way. So what was the result for division eight? They came a fabulous second, Wow weren’t they great? Fylde Donkeys

Trudie, Chloe, Peps & Tipsy – not for competition they ran, Without netting, just wings, proper Flyball was the plan So although not placed, a rosette they got, Showing the “Fylde Donkeys” were a “Special” lot. So sunny Saturday came to an end, With a BBQ for a bunch of Fylde friends. Les’s cage became a Barbeque stand And the feast we had was certainly grand. The smoke billowed towards chef, Ken, A good time was had again. The laughter flowed the wine was poured, In car, tent, caravan or B&B we snored.

Sunday

Sunday was a wet day, of that there was no doubt But with Wellingtons and waterproofs, it was not a total wash out. We sheltered, played tri-ominoes, scrabble and the odd card game, With no races today, we managed to stay mostly dry not out in the rain. Some of the team went out for a meal, Others had the race report to tussle. Colin came back – he’d had scampi, While Ken – he’d pulled a muscle!

Monday

M onday, dawn broke – the sun in the sky, The dog barking was drowned out as the planes roared by. First stop the Gazebo down on the farm, Oh we will miss Ken with his egg and bacon barm 14

Multi-breed

Home

M oses joined sister Pepsi Plus Rigsby, Chloe and Trude, They were raring to go they were up for it They were really in the mood. They had won two and lost two So it wouldn’t be first place, you could bet. But look, it did say second, On their red, green and white rosette. Now we need a plan and we need it agreed, Our two teams are racing each other in multi-breed. Daniella cries “okay, I agree with the plans Handlers to take their own dogs out, But I haven’t got four hands!” So everyone mucked in, All with one accord, Even visiting Hannah had the bucket, And newcomer Justine had the board. Then the first race began, “Are you ready?” the judge said, To all the folks in both lanes, Who were dressed in Black or Red. Twenty five or twenty six seconds was the average time. Paws flew, handlers yelled as the dogs passed the line. Race one, three, four, six, seven, eight and ten We wondered if we’d ever have time to sit and rest again. Carolyn leapt in the air for a very tight pass, Her knees went from beneath her and she landed on her ---, From starter to multi-breed M egan had made her move, M egan’s mums were proud as punch as she got in the groove. A round of applause – a cheer was heard When the judge announced the “Go For Us” came third. We knew she meant the GO4’S, cause we’re not posh or upper class But we got the rosettes and the fish skin treats so we thought we’d let it pass. Emerys – the new Red Riding Hood, with his soggy red towel, With his dwarfs around he even made old Dopey and Grumpy howl. Second place rosettes were up next – step forward Pick and M ix, We like your style you did us proud, fancy footwork licks and tricks. The Anglesey clock had turned so slow, And now for most it was time to go. Homeward bound to the Fylde Coast. M emories of the PODS being a great host. M emories of a weekend, the gazebo nearly blown away. Barbeque food went missing, and Les calling the AA. Quincy tattooed Daniella, Carolyn’s wonky knee, You’d think we’d had a rotten time, Here in Anglesey. But fun, friendship and wagging tails. Great sport and a field to run and play. So what do you reckon, Bonny, Jess and all, Shall we return another day? Jo Crosswell (Fylde Coasters) 15

Judge’s Report Division Three I enjoyed my first experience of judging at Tai Lawr, Anglesey on 31st July. After a week of administration it was fun to watch some good racing. It managed not to rain for long and the Dolphins didn’t quite succeed in giving me a rainbow of lights! I would like to thank the ring party, M olten M agnets, for their excellent support and a special thank you to Val who was so helpful. S ara Murphy (Pods)

Anglesey You may remember that last year we spent our first night under canvas at Saul which turned out to be eventful. So you may well be asking yourselves why should we go to Anglesey for a fortnight under canvas? Good question! And one that I will be asking myself next year before I decide whether we should go again to face Peter and Delia who will no doubt be blockading the yard, pulling up the drawbridge and pouring boiling oil from the battlements. This year there were five, myself, Gemma, Megan, Merlin and the little one Tamzin. On arrival I let the dogs out, but no one had warned us about the bird scarers. Gemma, who is terrified of bangs, was off into the wild blue yonder and nowhere to be seen. So everyone on site was asked to look for her, which they kindly did. It was suggested that one of the dogs might track her so Megan was set on the trail. Off she set through the farmyard and agility course, taking a few jumps on the way, over into a field, took a look left, said ‘there you go’ and continued on her merry way. Sure enough there was Gemma safe and sound. Really I should have known that this would set the seal for the rest of our stay. And there was me thinking I would have a nice relaxing holiday. Some hopes. On Wednesday during the week, we were racing. The weather was kind to us but right on our last race Merlin started to twizzle. As this had been one of his old habits I took no notice and tried to send the dog. Thankfully Sam Bawden realised something was wrong before I did and got the race stopped. I was in shock realising that something was wrong with his back legs and he really could not go anywhere. Again Sam took control and carried Merlin off to the vet, Tom, who, thankfully, was on site. Tom diagnosed that Merlin had a trapped nerve in his spine and had to be rested. No more flyball for Merlin that week. That night it rained (surprise, surprise). The next morning as I paddled through the tent to put the kettle on I thought; “So these are the joys of camping”. I decided to go off for the day in the hope that it might dry out sometime later. It was not to be. When I returned I was still paddling. So it wasn’t superman to the rescue, but Bristol Ballistics. Everyone took a corner and in no time at all the tent and everything in it was on higher, dryer ground, thank goodness. M y grateful thanks to them. At the beginning of the next week, after most of the flyballers had gone home, we took a walk down by the river. As we got to the far end I realised that Merlin had disappeared. I called and called, but to no avail. Anne took a look into the next field and said she could see him, but he would not come. We tried to get through the fence, but it was barbed wire and there were no gaps. I was worried as I thought he might have injured his back again and was not able to move. So there was nothing else for it. I took off my shoes, socks and trousers to paddle through to the other side and encourage him back. It was then we found out what the dog already knew. This was quicksand and I was sinking fast. With the help of one of Anne’s newly arrived and newly met friends who gave me her hand and pulled me out, (goodness knows what she thought of this mad, half clad, lady), I at least was safely on the river bank, now for the dog. We managed to find a very small gap between the fence and the river and eventually coaxed M erlin back through to squeals of delight from him. Thank goodness he was not hurt, just too scared to come back through (he may be a whimp, but he’s my whimp). Off we set, back to the campsite, where I could get dry and changed. I thought to myself, thank goodness no one had a camera, but I didn’t reckon on the M aple Leafs. Smile please, we got yer. Next year I may go to a War Zone. I think it might be safer. THE FIRST FLYBALL (to the tune of The First Noel!) “Your first Flyball,” the handler did say, Was to certain young pups as in their basket they lay, In their basket as they lay fast asleep, Dreaming of playing and rounding up sheep. Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Taken part in by many and enjoyed by all. The puppies looked up from chasing their flocks, Saw a long line of jumps and a shiny new box. “So what do we do now?” came their surprised refrain, “Run down to the end and then run back again!” Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Taken part in by many and enjoyed by all. They started at the line and they dashed to the end, Grabbed the ball in their mouth and charged back to their friend, “This is great!” they all cried with one accord, Giving thanks to their handler who did loudly applaud! Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Taken part in by many and enjoyed by all. So let us all with a rousing retort, Give voice to the pleasures of this wonderful sport, And when our time at last draws nigh, Let us hope we can play with the Angels on high! Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Flyball, Taken part in by many and enjoyed by all. Pam Bowyer (Racing Herts)

MOTTRAM ST. ANDREW We entered M ottram with two teams consisting of eight dogs and four handlers knowing that we would need a box loader. What we hadn’t envisaged was the fact that both teams would be competing in the same division, Division One at that! Think of the logistics, in out, in out, swapping dogs each time and organising a box loader. Then of course when we ran against each other we needed – four handlers and two box loaders! Was it a problem? Not really, flyballers are used to ‘helping out’. We must thank Nick from the M ansfield M arnicks, he was brilliant and did most of the box loading (except when he had to run his own dog in the same division) then Dave and Louise (Nuneaton Flyers) stepped in. When our teams were against each other the Flying Colours gave us a helping hand and provided the handlers for our dogs. Nick was on one of the boxes with Maria on the other and Dave, Heather, Barbara & Francis running the dogs. In true Flyball tradition we had a ball, especially when the M etals nearly beat the M agnets. For anyone who doesn’t know our teams, the M etals have Riva in it, she’s a Jack Russell who invariably runs around six seconds, the M agnets is our first team although on this occasion we only had two first team dogs and two third team dogs in it. Val, Judy Neil and myself would like to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Judge, Doreen and all the other teams for their patience when we had to swap dogs and of course to our substitute ‘team mates’ above.

Sad losses in the Nuneaton Flyers Teams Nuneaton teams have lost three dogs this year they are all sadly missed by their owners and have left gaps in the teams they were part of. With John's Disney and Pam's Meadow, who we have also lost, they can now make up a Nuneaton Team and a reserve in Doggy Heaven. M y own Border Collie, Corrie, one of the original team in 2000 - a definite character, she hated other dogs with a passion but had a heart as big as a bucket, never "burned rubber" but also never failed to do what she was supposed to. She started flyball late in life at seven years old and at nine ruptured a cruciate ligament but recovered to race again at ten years old. She had only achieved her FD but was a valuable asset in training young dogs who were tempted to cross lanes until they saw who was waiting! Sandra Long’s Working Sheepdog Buddy, again one of the original team, was a total "fuss magnet." He knew how to work a crowd so everyone fell in love with him. This unfortunately sometimes meant working his charm on the box judge before bringing the ball back to M um, but like Corrie, he always went up, got the ball and came back. It took three years of persistent racing for him to achieve his FDI and he worked as hard to get that as some do for their Gold award. John Blackford’s Rottie, Jake, always attracted attention as the Gentle Giant in the Cyclone team. He had a wonderful nature and tolerated all of the crazy collies around him, and was especially patient with puppies ... but in the flyball ring it took all of John’s strength to hold him back and if anyone else had to run him it was usually a two handed job to hold Jake in line. He mastered the art of bringing two tennis balls back at the same time on re-runs, and you couldn't see either of them in his enormous jaws. M issed and never to be forgotten. Judge’s Report Division Six As the weather forecast had not been good for the weekend, I set out for Nuneaton ensuring I had my ‘Anglesey’ waterproofs with me. Anglesey participants will know what I mean. This said, Division Six was first on and we managed to avoid the rain for the morning session. I think the only division to do so. Division Six was interesting to say the least. It took just under 2 hours to complete the morning session due to the combination of problems with the lights and having to request NFC team Carmarthenshire Chargers to run after the opposition had completed as their fourth dog preferred running for the opposition. The Scallywags had a young inexperienced dog in their team and decided by the second session to run NFC as well. The day belonged to the Urban Wolves (seeded 2) who maintained a 100% record to win the division. However in Race 1 their fellow team members, the Grey Wolves (seeded 3), took them to five heats. Race 12 saw the Grey Wolves take Whiterose Bushytails (seeded 1) to five heats, as well, but with the same result. The Killa Bytes (seeded 5) also did well to finish second in the Division. TH E TOR BA Y TR OTTER S GO FOR TH E GOLD BOWL! Whilst covering the UK Flyball Summer Championship 2005 at Daventry on the weekend of 20th & 21st August, we were fascinated to find a team of two people who, due to their novitiate status on the flyball scene, had decided to get a feel for the sport first hand. In order to do this they had devised a small course, involving gates, red and green markers, a box and lights. Yes, you’ve guessed it – it was the ‘portaloo challenge’ at night! Commentary follows. And number ‘1s’ was off, with the green marker changing to red in a flash. Did that mean a false start? Obviously not, as the gate remained closed. Oh no, she’s got a light – which is just as well really as in this darkness it could lead to disaster not being able to locate the box first go. With number ‘2s’ readying herself, jumping up and down in – well, was that excitement or something else? – We waited anxiously outside for number ‘1s’ to finish the course. Yes! After only a few short moments the marker changed from red to green and the gate opened. Number ‘1s’ appeared, rubbing her hands together, presumably in triumph at the speed with which she had loaded the box. Waiting no longer than was politely necessary, number ‘2s’ made a dash for the gate – and fumbled the changeover! That would take up precious time they could ill afford to lose at this stage. But rather that happen now, outside, as fumbling during the course itself could have very unpleasant consequences. No light – but with these somewhat reverse rules that was actually going to be a setback, unless that acute sense of smell could help locate the various obstacles. The marker changed from green to red and immediately back to green again. A false start! Number ‘2s’ quickly exited through one gate and entered the adjacent one. I wonder what that could have been? Never mind, all seemed well now. As number ‘2s’ came through the final gate the run was over and it only remained for the support team to come for the buckets and clear up behind the contestants. A new experience – though one that I do not think will catch on! (Only time will tell! Ed) The dogs gold team (alias the Torbay Trotters) ********************************************************************************** Karen Atterton & Amber would like to say a big Thank You to the M aple Leafs who have helped them gain their S ilver Award. **********************************************************************************

A BIG THANK YOU I was aware that Smudge had gained sufficient points to be awarded his Gold Award and Jake his Silver Award, but to receive the certificates and other gifts from my fellow team members at the BFA Summer Championship put the icing on the cake. These awards have to be worked for, everyone knows that, and cannot be gained by the individual dogs without the help of other team members, their dogs, and the teams that compete in tournaments. In addition the help and assistance given in the early days of training by long suffering trainers and their team of helpers is also required. This is a big thank you therefore, to everybody who has helped Smudge and Jake gain these milestone awards from the BFA. They are too numerous to mention here by name but as groups they are the Tykes, The Ruff Runners and our present flyball team members, Dog Friendly Flyers. Then there are the many people who ran training days including The Northern Bytes, Yorkshire Bouncers and of course BFA Committee members, not forgetting all those teams and their members that give their time to put on tournaments up and down the country so that we can achieve our goals. I would also like to thank all those teams we have competed against, sometimes we were victorious, at other times we went home ‘with our tails between our legs’ and vowed to do better next time. But that is Flyball and long may it continue as a sport that can be enjoyed by both dogs and handlers. Smudge is now nine years old and will be slowing down a bit but hopefully over the next few years Jake will gain enough points for his Gold. Who knows? Once again, thank you to all who helped gain these BFA M ilestone awards. John Verity, S mudge and Jake (Dog Friendly Flyers) 23

Judge’s Report Division One I was pleased to accept the opportunity to judge Division One. As you would expect this was a highly contested affair with racing to a high standard. At the end of the day there were only two teams in it and they were the Barkshire Bandits (seeded 1) and the M olten M agnets (seeded 2). With four wins each it was down to race fifteen the last race of the day/tournament. It was the M agnets’ day with consistent running of 17.67, 17.72 and 17.68 to win 3 – 0. The first upset of the day (seed wise) was in race three when the Barkshire Bullets (seeded 5) beat the Nuneaton Flyers (seeded 4) 3 – 0. In race seven the M agnets were taken to five heats by their fellow team members, the M olten M uzzles (seeded 6). In race eight the Bullets did it again by beating the M olten M arvels (seeded 3) 3- 0. This was a very highly contested race and the time difference in heat two was two hundredths of a second. The Nuneaton Flyers in race fourteen were triumphant over the M arvels in another closely contested race ending up 3 – 2 to the good. I congratulate all the teams involved in this excellent display of Flyball at its best. No wonder there were a lot of spectators gathered around the ring. Robert Henshall (Bristol Ball-istics)

Fantastic Flyball I joined Valley Flyball when I was nine Up on the hillside come rain or shine. We went to join the team with our dog called Flynn And in my eyes that collie is born to win. He runs in the starters and WOW he can fly He races over the jumps as the seconds tick by. Grabs the ball from the box, he thinks it’s great fun Whizzes back over the jumps and I don’t believe it WE'VE WON!!! Next it’s his brother Blaze, big black and white Up on the hillside in the sunlight. He’s only a baby he’s got to learn Like when the light shows, then it’s his turn. How fast to go over the jumps and when to get his ball. How tight to make his changes and listen for my mum’s call. Then there’s our team captain her name is M argaret Gore Her dog is champion Danny and wants flyball more and more. M y sister M addy, Chelsey and I work together as a team M ake the jump heights higher and lower and make sure the field is clean. Oh flyball is great fun and I’m sure you will agree That we are all mad fans and are as crazy as can be! Grace Lomas Age 10 (Valley Flyball Team)

THANK YOU PODS . S tarsky, Tico, Vanessa & Chris would like to say a massive thank you to Peter, Delia, M ichael and all the Anglesey PODS posse. We have had four and a bit years of fantastic fun in the world of flyballing. We will miss you all so much but hope to return some day or time visits to coincide with the summer show. Thanks also to those who ran Starsky for me at shows and put up with her mischievous ways. We will try to find a local team in Belgium, however there is no way that they will ever be able to match the camaraderie of PODS. You will all be sorely missed. Vanessa Averty (Pods)

HASTA LUEGO By the time you read this I hope I’m enjoying Sun and San M iguel by the pool in Spain! At last I hear you say… Having discovered Flyball and, more importantly, that Chance was able to “do it” I went to M arket Harborough (without a dog) in January 2000. It was freezing cold and all that noise at an indoor tournament – what an intro! But I was back the next month (with dog) and have had some fantastic times since and take with me some great memories. Here are just a few of the printable ones: •

Arriving at Petersfield for an Anton Christmas show in freezing fog and 5 of us taking the dogs for a walk by torchlight in a ploughed field. • Anglesey in December! The look on the guy’s face when he delivered our Chinese carry out to our rented house as he looked at 10 dogs in cages neatly arranged around the dining room. • Playing guess my age at Dundee. Twenty of us in one awning fueled by Lager, Vodka, wine etc, etc. • The rain being “blown” off the runback at Arley M oss. The rain at Anglesey, Prissick Base, Cheshire, Dundee etc, etc., but most of all the rain, sunshine, wind, rain, sunshine, hailstones, rain, thunder, lightning, rain at our first York Racecourse show (and that was only setting up on the Friday!). • The grimace on the BBC sound guy’s face when I told him ‘No I couldn’t stop Chance barking at Ben Fogle.’ • The response to my entry on the Discussion Board after the Summer Championship 2004. • Chance refusing to release the ball no matter what we tried. Ask nicely; shout and scream; feed biscuits, cheese, sausage, chicken, even the leg and/or behind of a fellow team member; Five of us lying on him; even smelling salts. He’s still holding onto the ball! • “One flush is enough” at Lotherton Hall. Enough said. • The Flying Colours’ boobs at Anglesey. • Finally, the lasting memory of Askham Bryan this year. M aria gave an excellent report in the last issue. Just a couple of points. It worked because of the spontaneous response of a bunch of crazy, fun loving people. When I went into the ring I went to the 45 foot marker to start my run! Who’s a silly billy? Lastly a new meaning was given to BFA, Bra Flash @ Askham. Some of you may substitute a different word for the “B” but I couldn’t possibly comment! These are just a few of the things I’ll remember. Oh, there’s been a lot of great Flyball (with dogs) as well but most of all I’ve had a lot of fun so many, many thanks to everyone in Flyball. Remember “keep the f in fun in Flyball.” I hope to see some of you at Askham Bryan 2006. Hasta luego mis amigos, David Bowles & Chance (Ex. Wakefield Tykes) 30

A TRIBUTE TO NICKY If you are lucky in life you meet people and have dogs that bring sunshine and happiness into your life. This is how it happened with Nicky. I can still see him as a small bundle of fur, twelve years ago. He came from Blyth and was sold when we first enquired about him. A week later he was for sale again, M rs Johnson, the breeder, would not let him go to a family where only one person wanted him. M r & M rs Johnson showed us how to show Nicky and being a lovely looking tri. he did quite well, but his first love was Flyball. We did a bit of Flyball for fun at a time when all the teams were ‘down south’. Then Anton Witter did a training day at Wakefield to try and get some teams ‘up North’. Nicky and I raced for the Start-Rite Wizards and then the Rocketeers, travelling over the Snake Pass in some very dodgy weather. We travelled south to Petersfield and North to Glasgow, Nicky being my constant companion. I miss him dearly, he was always in the back of the car, I would shout to him ‘ok Nick?’ and he would pop up. It was a lovely tribute to Nicky at Bakewell Tournament seeing all the dogs and people enjoying themselves. It gave me a tremendous buzz and I didn’t want to go home! I presented memorial cups on the Saturday to the fastest starter team. The Break-Aways, a team made up from all over the country. On the Sunday memorial medals were presented to the winners of Division One, the M olten M agnets with a very fast time. Nicky and I have had so much pleasure out of Flyball, it is nice to be able to put something back in. Nicky is never far from my thoughts, how he enriched and brought happiness into our and other peoples lives. M y daughter, Amanda, races Nicky’s daughter Lassie for Sheffield Speeders, she is just like her dad. Roy Weatherstone (Sheffield Speeders) 32

BAKEWELL 3rd / 4th S eptember 2005 The M olten M agnets would like to say well done to the Sherwood & Sheffield Flyball Teams on organising and running their first Flyball Tournament. A big learning curve for them all, which was very much appreciated by all the teams who attended. The venue was lovely, plenty of room for camping, flyball lanes and exercising the dogs, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Only a small downside (for me at least) was the long walk to the loos. With five dogs all running in different teams and teams competing in all three divisions it was a bit difficult to organise a ‘quick’ bathroom break for myself as well as my dogs. Never mind, this was a minor glitch in a very friendly atmosphere of competitive racing. The M agnets would also like to say how honoured they were to receive the medals donated by Roy Weatherstone (Sheffield Speeders) in memory of his dog Nicky. Thank you Jean Meeking (M olten M agnets)

Hooligan Harley Part II Hello again. Just an update on my budding flyball career: I can go up, I can go back down with the ball (and a bit of help). No sweat! M y biggest problem is other dogs running about - I just can’t help joining in. Anyway, she who must be obeyed, says we have to work on that and I must concentrate on what I’m doing, not them. I do try, but it’s fun joining in even if I’m not always welcome – can’t think why? I’ve been to quite a few tournaments so far to watch and learn and M um has the blisters on her hands to prove it. I can’t help getting excited and I now have to wear a headcollar. I also spend a lot of time trying to get it off, but haven’t managed it yet. We spent three days at Bakewell when the Speeders and the Outlaws hosted a tournament and I lived in a caravan with M um and Cookie. Great fun – I’ve never been in one before, so I was more barmy than normal. Bad news for all concerned. An extract from my Diary Day 1. Relatively sane. Not a lot of action yet so behaved reasonably well. Day 2. A bit more action. Escaped under the awning at the crack of dawn and did a runner. Yippee – ran up and down a huge hill for ages, rolled in lots of sheep poo, and found lots of sniffs to follow. Could see the boss way below running around in her socks and nightie (not a pretty sight) shouting at me and waking everyone up. Went back when I was good and ready. M um was not amused. I licked her foot and she softened a bit, but I was only trying to get at the sheep poo that was stuck on her sock. Day 3. M ind blowing. Dogs and people everywhere. M um took me to the ring to watch the racing. As usual I went over the top and was taken back to the caravan to cool off. Fat chance. As soon as her back was turned I jumped the bottom half of the door and did a runner into the ring to join in the fun. For some reason I didn’t get the welcome I was expecting. Someone blew a whistle and before I knew it I was frog marched out the exit. A red-faced M um came running up and dragged me back to the caravan. At least she had all her clothes on this time. Day 4. Boring - M um was racing so I was confined to barracks. Had several walks in between but she never let me out of her sight – can’t think why. We went home the next day, very tired, but had had a great time. M um told me we were going to persevere with training over the winter. I don’t know who this Percy Vere is, but I hope he has lots of sheep. As good old Arnie said - I’ll be back! Harley (the hopeful Sherwood Outlaw) MEMBERS HIP S ECRETARY REQUIRES HELP! DONCASTER BELLE STARS AWARDS FLYBALL DOG Sue Harbon with Cleo & Lady Trish Larder with Bryn Janet M cCullough with S hep FLYBALL DOG INTERMEDIATE Janet M cCullough with S hep Anne Hinz with Dash FLYBALL DOG GRADUATE Joanna Hope with Logan David Baxter with Rowan Paula Thorpe with Woody FLYBALL DOG ADVANCED Lois Longstaff with Polly Joanna Hope with Logan Tracey Lorriman with Badger S ILVER Debbie Holding with BELLE All flyballers know that the FD award marks the beginning of a dog’s Flyball career. For Sue & Lady this has been the equivalent of an Ice Blue M oon award. Lady started with Belle Stars when I started the club and it took a while to train her but not only that, she was never destined for the dizzy heights of Division One. It has taken Lady and the club two and a half years to reach this first and last milestone and on behalf of the club I would like to say well done and thank you to Sue for not only her commitment to the Club but also her patience in getting this award, often bowing out of competitions so that younger faster dogs could compete. She now runs her partner's dog Cleo who is showing fantastic promise and is getting nearly as mad as us seasoned flyballers. As team captain I would like to thank my team for supporting me once again through another year that at times has been both very rewarding and difficult. Belle Stars have now been competing for three seasons and we are going from strength to strength. We have had a fantastic year for competing that was finished off by winning the Summer Championship Division Four Trophy. There is no better end to the summer and we look forward to next year and hope that it is as good as this one. At the time of writing this after Bakewell Tournament Cleo, Sue's new dog leapt out of a car window and was seriously injured. This has meant that flyball is unfortunately a long way away but hopefully by next summer she will have recovered enough to start back at basics. I just want to say on behalf of all Doncaster Belle Stars Flyball Team that we wish Cleo & Sue all the best and hope that Cleo makes a speedy recovery because we all miss her very much. Debbie Holding (Doncaster Belle Stars)

**SILVER AWARD ** Chloe and Lesley from the Live Wires, would like to personally thank Doreen (Northern Bytes), M aria (Flying Colours), Faye, Gill and Pat (Rapidz) for getting us "hooked" back in August 2000 when we originally trained and competed in "Baby Bytes" starter team, before Live Wires was born. As a 12" crossbreed height dog, it has taken us nearly sixty open tournaments, with the majority in the lowest divisions, to reach the first landmark achievement. Hopefully this story will encourage other handlers with little dogs, we can do it! A big thank you to the Live Wires for the lovely trophy to mark this wonderful occasion. Chloe is the second "Live Wire" to reach this award. Lesley Curnow (Live Wires)
