First Time Installation Instructions Windows 8 Cadwell Purchased Computer

If you purchased your computer from Cadwell, all necessary Windows® and Sierra Ascent software has already been installed. There is no need for you to install any software. Please put the installation disc in a safe place, it is included as a back-up copy only.

Non-Cadwell Purchased Computer

If your computer is from a source other than Cadwell, you must perform the installation steps detailed below.

Step 1: Minimum Computer Requirements

Prior to installing the Sierra Ascent software, please verify that your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements needed to run this software. If you need assistance in determining your computer’s system specifications, please contact the Cadwell Application Support department at (509) 735-6481. Operating System: Processor: Hard Disk: Memory: Graphics: USB Ports: Network:

Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit) Intel Core i3, 2.4 GHz 80 GB free space 3.0 GB 1024 x 768 resolution 1 available USB 2.0 or 3.0 100 Base-T or Wireless for LAN access

You must be logged in to the computer with full Administrator permissions in order to configure the computer and to properly install the Sierra Ascent software. You should also temporarily disable anti-virus and internet security programs before performing installation, as these programs can interfere with the installation of the software drivers.

Step 2: Configure Windows 8

For optimum performance, several settings within Windows 8 need to be adjusted. Follow the instructions in document “369043-xxx Configuring Windows 8 for Sierra Summit-Ascent.pdf”. This document is available from the Support-EMG/NCV/EP page of the Cadwell website (www.cadwell.com), or from the Documents folder on the installation disc.

Step 3: Install QuickReport and Sierra Ascent Software 3.1 Insert the Sierra Summit-Ascent Software Installation disc (Cadwell P/N 369043-200) into the DVD/CD drive. The Sierra Setup window will be displayed. You may need to select “Run SierraSetup.exe” from the AutoPlay window.

3.2 Select the Sierra Ascent system tab. 3.3 Install the QuickReport program by clicking on the Install QuickReport button. Follow the on-screen instructions. Use the default destination directory “C:\Cadwell\QuickReport”. 3.4 Install the Sierra Ascent program by clicking on the Install Sierra Ascent button. Follow the on-screen instructions. Use the default destination directory “C:\Cadwell\Sierra Ascent”. Note: If you are setting up a Reader Station, use the Install Ascent Reader button. This will automatically disable the communication error message at program launch.

3.5 Install Device Drivers. After finishing the Sierra Ascent installation you will be prompted to install device drivers. Click the Next button, and then click the Finish button.

3.6 After the device driver installation is complete the Sierra Setup window will be displayed, click on the Close button. You can now remove the installation disc from the DVD/CD drive; you will not need to use any of the other buttons shown in the setup menu. 3.7 Restart the computer.

Step 4: Connect the Ascent Base Unit, Power Up, and allow USB drivers to be installed 4.1 Connect the Sierra Ascent Base Unit to the computer using the USB-A to USB-B cable that was provided with the unit. Connect the USB-B end of the cable to the “To-PC” port on the back of the base unit, and then connect the USB-A end of the cable to any available USB port on the computer. 4.2 Switch on the power to the base unit. Windows will detect several new USB devices in the base unit and will automatically configure these devices. You will need to wait 3060 seconds for all of these devices to complete their installation. Note: This only occurs the first time you connect and power-up the base unit.

Step 5: Configure the Ascent Speakers

Note: Skip this step if you are setting up a Reader station. 5.1 From the Desktop, open the Control Panel. 5.2 Click on the Sound item. 5.3 The Ascent’s base unit speakers will be listed as “Speakers-USB audio CODEC”.

Select this entry and then click on the Properties button. Change the name from “Speakers” to “Ascent Speakers”. Click the Change Icon button, and then select the round speaker icon. Click OK. Click Apply, and then click OK. The sound window should look like the following picture. This will make it easier to identify the speakers from within the Sierra Ascent program.

5.9 Click OK to close the Sound window. Note: Do not make the Ascent Speakers the default device (green circle with white check mark).

Step 6: Setup Permissions for QuickReport 6.1 6.2

From the Desktop, right click on the QuickReport icon. Select Run as Administrator.

In the QuickReport login window; choose SierraUser with no password and click OK. The main QuickReport window will be displayed; the available report templates are shown on the left. Close QuickReport by clicking on the “X”.

From the Desktop, right click on the Sierra Ascent icon. Select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Check the box “Run this program as an administrator”.

Step 8: Verify the Base Unit connection and Version Numbers 8.1 Start the Sierra Ascent program. 8.2 When the program starts, it will display the message: “Your user settings have not been initialized. Would you like this to be done now?” Click the “Yes” button. If you receive a communication error message, click the Close button. Verify the USB connection between the computer and the base unit and try starting the Sierra Ascent program again. 8.3 From the Help menu, select “About Sierra...”. The About Sierra Ascent window will be displayed. 8.4 The Sierra Ascent software version is shown at the top of the window and should be version 1.1.143. Several system components will be listed in the Device-Index section, this list will vary depending on your base unit options.

Step 9: Select the default speakers 9.1 From the File menu, select System Setup. 9.2 Click on the Audio Setup button. 9.3 For the setting “EMG Audio Device (Live & Playback)”, click the drop-down arrow and change the selection from “Windows Default Device” to “Ascent Speakers (USB audio CODEC)”. This is the sound device that was configured in Step 5.

9.4 Click OK to close the Audio Setup window. 9.5 Click OK again to close the System Setup window.

QuickReport Login (stand-alone)

If you launch QuickReport without the Sierra Ascent program running you will get a Login window. For the ID, select SierraUser from the drop-down list, leave the password empty and click OK.

Factory Defaults

If you would like to configure your system with the most recent factory default settings, test protocol layouts, and report templates, perform a RESTORE-ALL function using the preserve file on the installation disc. The preserve file is located in the Defaults folder and is called “Ascent Defaults v1.1.prs”.
