Youth Clothing Listen to Sermons Online! We have moved our sermons to a different location. You can listen to Ken Massey's sermons here: www.sermoncloud.com/firstchristian. A big thanks to Andy Askew for recording the sermon audio every Sunday!

September 16 10am2pm. The youth will be selling women’s and girl’s clothing to help support their mission trips. Come beautify yourself and support the next generation of Christ’s servants!

Even though our temperatures are in the 90’s, Crisis Control Ministry is getting ready for the cold weather that is just around the corner. For the month of September, they are requesting GRITS AND OATMEAL be given by the local churches. These are inexpensive items so add as many as you can to your shopping cart. I believe you will be ―warmed‖ by your own generosity. ~Becky Minnix, Member Christian Action Committee Check out the Web site for upcoming events—www.disciplesofchrist.com Follow us on Facebook.com/First-Christian-Church-496555193724355

FROM THE MODERATOR: With Ken Massey's guidance, the Transition Team has led us through a celebration of several aspects of our past. In his sermons, he has also reminded us of the part each of us plays today in the life of the church and the fulfillment of its mission. Some of us work in very visible ways, others behind the scenes, but all in service to God. It is important for us to remember in our prayers and with thanks the many who have contributed their time and their treasure through the decades as well as those who continue to do so now. We remember those, too many to name, who visit the sick and the homebound, who help carry our ministry into the community, who plan, prepare and participate in our worship services and other congregational events, who teach our Sunday School classes and guide our youth, who see to the operation and maintenance of our facility, who help in the office, who do many other tasks needed in a congregation as active as ours. We are blessed with many talented and dedicated people. We also need to remember those whose financial contributions have helped to make our work possible. We need to celebrate the many who have given generously over the years and also those who made sure that their support for the life of this congregation would continue after them. Some established special funds from which we continue to draw for their designated purposes, such as the Bowen-Leight Memorial Fund, which has helped us continue our youth ministry, the R.M. & Hazel Tesh Mann Evangelism Fund, and the Lena G. Pratt Fund, which has helped to educate our Timothys. Others, such as Peggy Leight, Louise Hunter, and C.H. Richards, set up endowment funds which provide us an annual income to use for the youth, for outreach, and for music. And then there are those, such as Pearl Brendle, Bruce Sparks, and Agnes O'Hara, who made bequests to serve the general needs of the church. These bequests, along with many smaller gifts, built up the unrestricted fund which has helped us replace roofs and HVAC units, refurbish our sanctuary, cover our budget deficits at the end of the year, and pay for many other projects over the years. This is the fund mentioned in the June issue, which though much reduced, continues to help with needs beyond the scope of our budget. We celebrate and thank God for all of these faithful members, past and present, who help make this congregation the servant church it continues to be. Yours in Christ, Doug

Say Hello to Alanna Harris

We are very pleased to welcome Alanna Harris as our new secretary. She will be in the office from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. We asked her what she wanted us to tell you as an Introduction, and this is her response: “I am excited to become a part of the First Christian Church staff. My husband and I moved to the Winston area, which we love, about a year ago. I have a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Outdoor Education. In my free time I enjoy hiking, climbing, cooking, and gardening. We are expecting our first child in January of 2018, which we are thrilled about!” “Alanna started last week, and has already shown that she is a joy to work with. “~Doug Cardwell

Transition Team Update Interim Minister, Ken Massey Thank you FCC for participating in our fourth congregational meeting, which was a conversation around the theme of partnerships. The saying amongst church growth experts is, “what you do is less strategic than ‘who’ you do it with.” As in marriage, a good partner makes all the difference. FCC has a vivid example of this reality in New Communion. No matter how compelling the mission of feeding people is, and no matter how passionate a few people might be about that mission, this new ministry would never have happened without the right combination of partners. In other words, New Communion figured out “who” and this made the “what” possible. This is the reason we had a discussion about “connections” on August 27. FCC’s primary connection, historically and financially, has been her denomination. When we considered what we value about being “Disciples,” participants articulated these among others:  An emphasis on communion (weekly); 

An openness to all;

A freedom from required doctrines or creeds;

An ecumenical spirit;

The full acceptance of women as ministers and leaders.

Not only has FCC worked in concert with her denomination. She has engaged in mission with numerous community organizations through financial support, the use of facilities and volunteerism. These connections developed through various relationships that have changed over time. So participants were asked to identify the partnerships that seem to have the greatest potential for helping FCC achieve her missional goals in the future. These missional goals were identified in a previous Transition Team event:  To reach and minister to young families 

To provide good pastoral care to members

To continue community ministries that serve basic human needs

A final report on priorities will come later from the Transition Team, but most tables saw three ministries as particularly strategic: The backpack program, New Communion and Palooza. The reason we asked participants to identify priorities is simple: no church can support every effort. The more a church “spreads out” her missional resources, the less impact she has. Like streamlining our church structure, we need to take steps to streamline our partnerships. We also asked this question of participants: “Should the FCC Pastor Search Team look only at candidates trained and ordained in the Disciples of Christ tradition, or should they also look at ministers of like faith and practice who are willing to align with the DOC?” Participants gave us a strong indication that the Search Team should look within the denomination AND outside the denomination for the next pastor. What a joy it is for me to see you engage in planning for your future. Soon, a Search Team will be formed and a Pastor Survey sent to you. That survey will allow you to name the key characteristics needed in your next pastor. Keep praying! Ken

September Happenings * Don’t forget the youth clothing sale discussed on page 1 of the Insight! Looking forward: On Sunday morning we will dive into Paul's letters to the Corinthians and how it applies to our lives today. On Wednesday nights in September we will study how we as Christians can have healthy dialogue with other faith communities. Each week, we will focus on a different faith tradition, including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and atheists/agnostics. If you would like to volunteer with our youth or find out other ways to plug into this ministry, please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected]. Peace, Kaitlin Mundy

From the Library Finding a Faith that makes Sense by R. Scott Colglazier, a Disciple of Christ minister in Texas, was written because he believes that, “certain ways of understanding God make more sense than other ways, and that certain perspectives of the Christian faith need to be heard, even if they were not learned in Sunday School as a child.” A.N. Wilson’s Paul: the Mind of the Apostle is a biography of the man who has been called “Christianity’s true inventor.” The book explores Paul’s background, his travels, and his writings. Reading Clarence Jordan’s Cotton Patch Version of Paul’s Epistles provides an interesting and humorous contrast to the Wilson biography.

CREATIVE PALOOZA Greetings FCC Family!

Creative Palooza has started out with a new school year.. Its hard to believe this is my 9th school year at First Christian Church. I have seen the children grow up and some are now in high school. Starting a new school year always means new teachers. We have Amanda, working with our 3rd and 4th grade. We have Kristina in 1st and 2nd grade. We have James in 5th & 6th grade and Nancy with our Kindergarten group. We have two 7th graders this year!

Thanks to all the members that help us to grow here at Palooza! Sue Reverend Sue Halford, Director

We thank the church for all your help bringing food! Remember we always need more food, the children are hungry when they get here. We always need help with the children in reading and writing their letters.

DWM/CWF Day Group 2017 Nut Sale Fall is approaching and it is time for us to begin taking orders for our annual nut sale. A DWM/CWF member will be calling you to see if you would like to place an order. Due to weather conditions, our supplier has had to increase prices on some items, while other items are less this year. Where possible, this price reduction has been reflected in our prices. New Communion Mobile Food Pantry needs Peanut Butter & Jelly FCC members have been asked to make peanut butter and jelly a permanent staple in your grocery carts to help stock the mobile food truck on a regular basis. Please make sure they are in plastic containers so they do not break. We are making a difference in helping to feed hungry people in our community! Keep up the good work! Check out the New Communion bulletin board across from Taylor Hall for volunteer opportunities and the distribution schedule. Your donations can be left in the New Communion Box.

Candle and T-Shirt Sales We are so grateful for the collaboration with Oh My Goodness Herbal Bar. The beautiful candle with a prayer in English, Arabic, and Hebrew is just $25.00 and feeds two families five meals. The scent is vanilla, frankincense and myrrh. We will have candles in the office and a check to New Communion can be dropped off between 9-1. We also still have men's and women's t-shirts available sizes small through 2x.

David and Monica are beginning Chaplain residencies. We will need volunteers to help run distributions for September and October. It's a fun experience and you truly get to meet your neighbors. Contact Paul Gillespie to learn more!
