FIM TRIAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
2014
PRESENTATION T
he 2014 FIM Trial World Championship is starting a new season. Last year was an important milestone in the history of Trial, as many rules were changed – and put into practice during the season. On the whole, the outcome was positive. The changes, particularly the introduction of a non-stop rule to replace the no backwards rule, brought a more dynamic rhythm to the sections, making them more interesting for both the riders and the spectators. The Trial Commission also restructured its Championships, focusing on four outdoor Series: the Women’s and Men’s World Championships, the World Cup and the 125cc FIM Cup for young riders from 16 years old, with no top age limit.
Vito Ippolito FIM President
Globally the 2013 season was a very interesting one despite the fact that Toni Bou continued his domination, uninterrupted since 2007, in both Trial and X-Trial! It is the first time in the history of motorcycle sport that one rider has remained at the pinnacle of his sport for so long. Nevertheless, as the 2013 season showed, Toni Bou had to fight hard to remain in front and win the Championship. The riding level is really excellent and we shall have the same kind of competition in the coming months. This year’s Championship will start overseas. The first round will be held in Australia. The venue at Mount Tarrengower is hosting the opening event, its second World Championship round after its successful first time back in 2012. The second round will take place at the traditional venue of Motegi, Japan. Back in Europe,
two rounds will warrant particular attention. In France, for the first time, a round will be held on the beautiful Island of Corsica, and there is also a round in Belgium for the first time since 2006. Trial sport continues to attract many spectators. We are working on expanding the television coverage so that this competition can reach a huge global audience across five continents, giving a great platform to all the people involved - FIM, organisers, sponsors, manufacturers, teams and riders - for the promotion of this sport. The FIM Trial des Nations – for men and women – is also a highly successful competition and the number of participating countries is increasing every year. This event for national teams, which is very attractive for riders, teams, the industry and the public, will be held in Andorra this year. My sincere greetings go to all the people involved in Trial sport: riders, teams, manufacturers, sponsors, organisers, volunteers, officials, etc. for all the work they have carried out. Together we shall pool our efforts to push this sport ahead! Let me also congratulate the spectators who, like us, admire the extraordinary performances of Trial riders that make this sport so spectacular. Vito Ippolito FIM President

TRIAL AND THE ENVIRONMENT LE TRIAL ET L’ENVIRONNEMENT
W
hen I think about Trial, I remember my first events as an FIM Environmental Delegate and recall fondly to mind the lovely mountains of Andorra and the splendid scenery of Goldendale and Duluth, for example. Trial instilled in me a great respect because every obstacle represents balance, steadiness, a capacity to take decisions, dexterity, concentration, consistency and perseverance, among many other characteristics. These skills can doubtless also be applied in real life. When we encounter obstacles or setbacks that is when we become the “Trial riders of life”. One of the biggest challenges for the FIM International Environment Commission (CIE) is striking a balance between sport and respect for the environment in order to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same privileges as we do at present.
Kattia Juarez Hernandez CIE Director FIM International Environment Commission
Last year, the Federació Motociclista D’Andorra emerged as winner of the FIM Environment Award. Every year, it becomes more difficult to compete for this recognition and more difficult for the Jury to select the winners, given the high quality of the entrants. The Award was presented to the Andorran Federation for its excellence in organising events on a sustainable basis both before, during and after the event itself, and also for the efforts made to coordinate with the local government and conduct impact studies on the site. All this is achieved not just with limited financial means but with a small team of volunteers who contribute all their knowledge to ensure the sustainability of the event.
The stories of these events, such as the Gran Premi D’Ándorra which showcases the fundamentals of Trial - balance, steadiness, consistency and perseverance - should inspire them and others to keep on organising sustainable events in the knowledge that so much can be achieved with good will and good planning.
I would like to encourage you all to take inspiration from Trial, but now with a new ingredient, that is respect for the environment and preservation of nature for the coming generations.
Dreams do come true, and like Andorra, you could be the next to experience it for yourselves.
