with over-door air curtains. Special fan units are fitted above the doors to direct the air vertically downwards at high speed. This creates an air curtain which acts as a “climate separator”, preventing an exchange of heat between the interior and exterior air. In the winter months, the air blown downwards is warm, which means that the floor area around the doors dries more quickly, enhancing passive safety in snowy and icy conditions. In addition, the warm air prevents condensation from forming on the glass surfaces of the doors. Two of the seven Citaro LE models supplied are rural-service Citaro LE Ü variants. These vehicles will be used for, among other things, the airport service and their distinctive design reflects this. The sides of the brilliant silver and black buses feature a distinctive silhouette of a plane. infra fürth verkehr gmbh is responsible for the local public transport system in the city of Fürth, northern Bavaria, Germany.

DISCUSSED AT THE IBE CONFERENCE

In Rome there was a talk of “Safety 10 and honors” in school transport, tourism services in the cities and the liberalization effects of the long-distance lines

scheduled exhibitions and THE debates of 2015 ended up in Italy with IBE Conference, staged in Rome

in early December. It is an event organized by ANAV, the association of Confindustria which brings together public transport private companies and Rimini Fiera, which in its turn organizes the biennial International Rimini Bus Expo, scheduled this year on October 26-28. Three topics were discussed at IBE Conference. The first topic related to the “Safety 10 and honors” campaign and promoted by ANAV in collaboration with Evobus Italy was launched in June 2015 at the UITP held in Milan. It focuses on transport

safety in school buses, raising awareness of school establishments and families on this issue. You may watch the video spot presented on the occasion and available on the home page of BusToCoach.com. Nicola Biscotti, the president of ANAV, stressed the criticality of scholastic bus transport in terms of safety, calling for the commitment of everybody to a decisive change of pace starting with the need to work systematically for the service quality recognition that cannot be guaranteed by decreasing price competition. According to the Anav-Isfort study, just 5 more euro per passenger shall ensure safety and quality. The second debate dedicated to open-top

bus tours in the city took inspiration from the study presented in this case by Isfort. It highlights the regulation issues of these services, subject to different rules depending on the area, although there were some like Professor Francesco Filippi that argued that the way forward is not normalizing but liberalizing, simplifying access procedures to the market as it has been done in London.

In the framework of market liberalization there also was a discussion on the effects of the reform that starting from January 2014 has completely removed the existing system of exclusive concessions in favor of non-exclusive licenses with regard to main bus lines, with positive effects on all fronts. On the sidelines of the debates there was a small exhibition of Iveco buses, VDL and Atomic.

COMPONENTS AND ACCESSORIES AT BUSWORLD EUROPE Second part of the report on the specialists in bus components at Kortrijk

FIRETRACE -

According to the statistics a good portion of fires, more than 70%, originates in the engine compartment. Firetrace, a manufacturer of automatic fire detection and fire suppression systems, offers the Firetrace Detection Tubing. This system is based on a thermosensitive and pressurized polymer tube, which, reacting to the heat and flame radiant energy, bursts releasing the fire suppression agent. In this case the direct release takes place. The release may also be indirect by means of a fixed distribution network (here the tube works only as a detector). Among the advantages of the Firetrace Detection Tubing there is reliability in harsh environments due to tolerance to dirt, debris and extreme temperatures, uninterrupted service requiring no electricity, the alarm availability and the ability to send an alert to the monitoring system, economic installation and maintenance together with recharging. Firetrace also offers a new mounting system for horizontal spaces that do not support a vertically disposed cylinder. Firetrace systems are certified according to the SPCR 183 process.

VOITH - At the Kortijk Busworld, Voith presented the

DIWA.6 automatic transmission, the multi-awarded braking system Aquatarder SWR (Secondary Water Retarder), the telemetric system DIWA SmartNet and the air compressors. The DIWA automatic transmission was specifically developed for buses. Compared with its predecessor model, the DIWA.6 can save almost another 5% fuel. Apart from utilizing the topography-dependent program SensoTop, this is made possible by the need-based reduction of the operating pressure and an intelligent start-up management. The Voith Aquatarder SWR is the first secondary retarder to brake with water using the cooling agent of the engine. This means that it does not need an additional operating medium and is able to perform up to 90 percent of all vehicle braking operations wear-free. In addition, it requires only half the installation space and is 35 kg lighter. The telemetric system DIWA SmartNet is an integrated solution for monitoring the driveline and allows fast and direct access to operating data. With the new generation DIWA SmartNet 2.0, data for transmission diagnosis can now also transmitted via WiFi. The Voith air compressors are also suitable for the new EURO-6 engines. Produced with aluminum lightweight design, the two-stage compressors are a series feature of Daimler, MAN and Volvo coaches. The Voith air compressors can save up to 1 litre of diesel per 100 kilometres.

FOGMAKER - There is a fire detection system for

a bus engine compartment using high-pressure water mist in combination with special nozzles, so as to create microdrops with an average size of 50 microns. During the evaporation process, the water mist cools the combustion gases and the engine compartment hot parts, rapidly extinguishing the fire and reducing the risk of re-ignition. The created vapor prevents the supply of oxygen to the fire. The Fogmaker system includes a low concentration of AFFF to create an aqueous insulation film for the effective combustion suppression.

Cummins presented the latest ISB engines with the new SmartEfficiency ratings for 2017, complying with the upcoming Euro VI OBD C requirements. OBD C is the latest step in the Euro VI standard for new vehicle approvals from 31st December 2015 and all vehicles from 31st December 2016. For 2017 Cummins will offer new ratings specifically developed for bus operation. Substantially it will be improved the torque at low rpm, from 700 rpm/ min, so that it will be delivered improved vehicle acceleration across all the rev range. The ISB4.5 four-cylinder engine moves up to a new peak torque of 850 Nm against the previous one delivering 760 Nm while the ISB6.7six-cylinder engine moves to a high peak torque of 1,200 Nm from 1,100 Nm along with a new 300 hp/224 kW top bus rating as well as a new 320hp/239kW top rating for coaches. These improvements increase the scope of Cummins product offerings for the bus and coach sectors, being suitable for wider range of applications, vehicle weights and working cycles. “ Euro 6 has changed the landscape for engine installation and operation, and the previous rules don’t apply any longer. Our objective for 2017 has not just been to meet the regulatory requirements but to improved performance and efficiency with no changes to displacement or hardware”, said Claudio Barcena from Cummins.

year. The Neoplan Skyliner has all the cards in hand considering the modern and slender aesthetic line that reduces the visual impact of its size (14 metres long and 4 metres high). The front is distinguished by the classic, big windscreen with its horizontal division and the front apron typical of Neoplan with its clipped headlights. The upper part of the panoramic windscreen is tilted

around 25 degrees to contribute to aerodynamics and connects diagonally with the side windows of the lower deck creating a dynamic continuity. The dark color of the first columns creates the driver’s all-round view. It can carry up to 82 passengers and a guide. The lower deck is accessed via two 900-millimetre wide doors with its standing height of 1.81 metres. There are 21 seats

featured as standard with four pairs of visà-vis seats around two large tables, a galley, a 56-litre fridge and a toilet. Above each seat there are the service sets consisting of rotating cylindrical vents, individually controlled LED reading lights and integrated attendant call make in addi-

tion to three 10.2-inch LCD monitors. The upper deck has a standing height of 1,680 mm. There are 61 passenger seats, two 19-inch monitors and three 10.2-inch monitors. The air conditioning is separately controlled for upper and lower decks with cooling

performance of 51 kW (and heating output of 83.3 kW), supplied by Konvekta HLK air conditioning system with two integrated evaporators of 9 kW each for the lower deck and a frontbox for the upper deck. The air throughput has been increased by 25% relative to the previous model and now reaches 13,800 m3/h. For the driver there is a separate frontbox of 5 kW while the additional heating is provided by wall convectors powered by Spheros of 35 kW. The rational positioning of the air conditioning made it possible to expand the space for luggage above the rear tandem up to 11 cubic metres, accessible from both sides. The highly reliable powertrain is entrusted to the powerful 12.4-litre MAN

D2676 LOH 32 engine delivering 371 kW (504 horsepower) and 2,300 Nm of torque, constant between 930 and 1,400 rpm. Vertically mounted rearwards, it has two-stage turbocharging and common-rail injection system with an electronic management. For reducing the emission level Euro VI uses partial exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), SCR catalytic reduction with AdBlue injection and DPF. To be on the safe side they use the automated 12-speed ZF As-tronic transmission, equipped with Easy Start and integrated Intarder hydraulic retarder with five stages. All the axles are MAN branded, with the front independent suspension, the engine with two-stage gearbox and the third rigid axle with hydraulic steering control EHLA. The safety is provided by a Bosch electronically controlled braking system EBS with ABS/ASR, supplemented by electronic stability control (ESP) and emergency brake assist (EBA). For ensuring the driving stability and reducing the occurrence of roll or pitch, the Skyliner is fitted with electronically controlled active suspension system CDS (Comfort Drive Suspension).

FLEXIBILITY FIRST

is an acronym for “Mitteldecker” MD or “Middle-decker”, distinguishing the new models of the Setra Comfor-

tClass 500 introduced to the market at the end of 2014. Now this touring coach is offered in the two versions S 515 MD (12.3 metres) and S 516 MD (13.1 metres) with a particularly favorable quality / price ratio. To some extent as it is for the business models of the MultiClass 400 range. èè

Crossing the stars he test vehicle S 515 MD is T a version with rear entrance (you can either choose the classic version with central entrance) with toilet and kitchen on the ground floor rearwards. So, these are two options of this 3-star touring coach fitted with 48 passenger seats. Without these options the number of seats raises up to 55 units. The same capacity is offered in the central-door version, except for having an extra seat, fitted with toilet and kitchen. The difference is hidden in the luggage compartment capacity which in our case stands at 8.5 cubic metres against 6.1 cubic metres in the version with a central entrance. The passenger headroom retains the same height of about 2.1

metres of the HD model, while the lower floor assembly at 1,150 mm of the ground facilitates the passengers’ ascent and descent, especially through door 1 possessing three internal steps with elevation of only 180 mm and one step at the beginning of the aisle. The Setra Route model seats are fitted with adjustable backrest, folding armrest on aisle side, footrest, seat belts and leather he-

adrest. For the air treatment there is a 32 kW roof-mounted conditioning blowing through ventilation side windows and above service sets with air nozzles.

In fact, the MD models turn out to be the buses that while maintaining the ComfortClass HD modular characteristics (but with floor lowered at 1,150 mm), leave aside some accessories and install a smaller engine fitted as standard keeping the door open to all possible variants, surfing among the options. This applies on tourist trips, short tours and excursions as well as in shuttle service, long-haul lines and combined transport operations. The S 515 MD tested by BusToCoach is then a 12.3-metre version powered by a 7.7 litre OM 936 engine with an output of 354 hp (260 kW) and an eight-speed automated transmission GO 250-8 PowerShift (optional). A six-speed manual GO 190 transmission as standard. The access configuration implies door 2 mo-

he driver has the benefit of T the new “Coach” cockpit that features the same instru-

mentation, control configuration and storage concept of the ComfortClass 500 HD. This is also from where the MD has adopted control by a multifunction steering wheel, the proven “Stacks&Cards” operating concept that enables efficient navigation to individual menu groups (such as route information or vehicle momentary data) and its submenu (cards). The steering wheel has the buttons to activate the cruise control, operate assistance systems and “Bosch Classic Line” stereo CD audio system. The DVD player and associated monitors remain as optional. The heating system, ventilation and air-conditioning controls are identical to those of

HD models as well as the instrument panel with a colorful high-resolution display and four circular instruments that indicate the vehicle speed, engine speed and the fuel reserve & AdBlue momentary level. The “Coach Comfort” cockpit from the HD series is available on request. It is equipped with all the adjustments, the Grammer Tourea air suspension seat, complete

with hinged armrests and swevel 90 degrees. The direct visibility as well as through the multiple elec- emergency rear-view mirror is trically adjustable rear-view fixed inside the luggage commirrors is excellent. A third partment.

ved to the overhang rearwards, in order to gain space for the underfloor luggage compartment (with a capacity of 8.5 cubic metres). Loaded with 17,600 kg of ballast distributed over the seats, it traveled a long way of 342 km from Milan to Genoa and back at an average speed of 82.2 km/h, consuming an average of one litre of diesel per 4.61 km. A good result, especially compared to its predecessor S 415 GT-HD Euro V (the MD Euro VI took its place), on the same route that had already delivered a great result of 4.57 km / litre (refer to the table at the end of the article). It has to settle instead for second place in the ranking of two-axle Euro VI coaches tested by BusToCoach, just behind its brother S 515 HD that exploited all of its engine’s muscles (OM 470 with 428 horsepower) to close the trial to the average of 4.82 km/litre. However a comparison with the other two-axle Euro VI models, namely with the Irizar / Scania i6 12.37, reported in the final table proves to be inappropriate, because this refers to an HDH model (30 centimetres higher), in addition loaded with other 700 kg. The lower height of the S 515 MD (210 millimetres lower compared to the HD) plays into the aerodynamics and thus fuel consumption reduction, offsetting the higher engine speed, which, however, thanks to a finaldrive ratio rather short (1: 4,300), remains between 1,100 and 1,400 rpm at a speed of

TRANSMISSION The tested vehicle has the automated Mercedes GO 250-8 MPS with eight speeds and the Voith integrated water retarder. On series equipment there are the manual transmission GO 190 with six speeds. Transmission Ratio Acceleration 0-100 km/h

he Setra S 515 MD features T the Mercedes OM 936 engine with a 7.7-litre displacement, de-

veloping 354 horsepower (260 kW) of maximum power at 2,200 rpm and a torque of 1,400 Nm, always available between 1,290 and 1,600 rpm. A six-cylinder Mercedes belongs to the new generation of BlueEfficiency Power engines with common rail injection system, high-pressure pump (2400 bar) and two-stage turbocharger. The reduction of polluting emissions is achieved through the combination of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and post-treatment with oxidizing catalytic converter, a particulate filter (DPF) and a selective catalytic reduction ( (SCR) with AdBlue injection. Everyting is electronically controlled by the ACM module. The fitted gearbox is an excellent automated eight-speed GO 250-

80-100 km/h. It is enough to get on the flat highway sections an average consumption of 18.76 litres/100 km (5.33 km/litre). A good behavior is shown during uphill driving (2.88 km/litre), which limits to the strongly demanding uses the employment of a 10.7 OM 470 engine with an output of 360 or 394 horsepower and a torque up to 1,900 Nm (with a range engine it stops at 1,400 Nm). If there is a necessity to further consumption reduction, one can use superstructure automatic lowering at highway speeds or require Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), the system that regulates the transmission depending on the route topography. The safety system package fitted as standard can be as well implemented with a third generation Active Brake Assist (ABA3).
