February 10, 2016 “As the ashes on our foreheads today do not come from our ideas but from the tradition of the Church, may the other sacrifices that the Church proposes for Lent, i.e., prayer, abstinence, fasting, and almsgiving, take special precedence for us this Lent. For these are not sacrifices that we have decided upon, but those proposed to us by the Church, the real Body of Christ which continues in the world.” (Father Richard Veras) *Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule: 6:00AM, 9:00AM, 12:00PM & 7:30PM Blessing with Ashes will be at the end of each Holy Mass Ash Wednesday is a day of strict fasting and abstinence DURING LENT: Stations of the Cross: Every Wednesday at 8:30AM & Every Friday at 6:30PM Additional Holy Masses: Every Friday at 7:00PM

YOLO Young Adult Ministry * Friday, February 12 Dear Young Adult Men & Women, We are excited to be kicking off our Lenten series on discernment! Discernment is something that should be a part of each of our lives. This Lent, YOLO hopes to delve into discernment in order to understand what God is calling us to know and do with our lives. Some of the areas we are hosting will discuss the following topics: February 12 – What is discernment and what types of things should we discern? February 19 – When do you “Know” what you’re hearing is from God? February 26 – Discernment of the Spirits March 4 – Consolation vs. Desolation March 11–No meeting (Lenten Symposium the following day) March 18 – Obstacles of Discernment Each of these evenings will start with 7:00PM Holy Mass with the parish, followed by snacks and discussion on the topic listed. There will be a brief introduction to the topic and a guided discussion to allow us to grow in understanding of how God reveals Himself to us through our discernment. I would encourage you to consider making it a Lenten resolution to join us for our series on discernment. We hope you consider joining us for a great series that can benefit you no matter where you are in your life! Questions: Facebook Page: YOLO Live 4 Christ or Mary Giroux, [email protected]

Lenten/ Easter Basket Offerings 2016! “The Lenten season offers us once again an opportunity to reflect upon the very heart of Christian life: charity. This is a favorable time to renew our journey of faith, both as individuals and as a community, with the help of the word of God and the sacraments. This journey is one marked by prayer and sharing, silence and fasting, in anticipation of the joy of Easter.” (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI)

Please open your hearts and consider how you can offer your God-given gifts and talents to help others this Lent by assisting in one or more of the following areas: Medical Equipment Sponsorship- The highlighted Lenten Offering for 2016 is for the underprivileged families who reside in the Congo. Fr. Jean Ikanga is now doing his residency at Emory University School of Medicine in the department of Rehabilitation. He will be finishing with his training in the USA next year and returning to the Congo, to help treat the sick. Many people there have serious illnesses, but because they live in a war torn country, have never had a chance to see a nurse or a doctor. They are truly the poor, the forgotten and the deprived. The two most urgently needed pieces of equipment are: Microscopes at $1,889 each and Ultrasound Machines, for a fetus, at $5,200 each. To assist helping the poor souls who are very ill and suffering, please keep them in prayer, and consider offering a monetary donation so that the necessary medical equipment can be purchased. Please make your check payable to Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church and indicate Medical Equipment Sponsorship on the subject line of your check. Please place your Lenten Offering Envelope in the collection basket or drop it off in the Parish Office by March 27. St. Cyril Families in Need: Once again this year, members will show their care and love for our own parish families here at St. Cyril’s. These very special families are in great need for your prayers and temporary help through monetary donations. Your financial assistance will help to alleviate an already deeply stressful crisis of a severe medical issue or the loss of a job. These unexpected problems can cause a family to fall into deep financial problems. “The kindly man will be blessed, for he gives of his sustenance to the poor.” (Prov 22:9) Please consider giving a monetary donation to help get a family back on their feet as they struggle to supply their basic needs. Please make your check payable to Ss. Cyril & Methodius Church and indicate St. Cyril Family in Need on the subject line of your check. Please place your Lenten Offering Envelope in the collection basket or drop it off in the Parish Office by March 27. Pro-Life- Wee Care- Right to Life- LIFESPAN believes that human life has value in all stages of development from conception until natural death, and is committed to speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves- the unborn, the aged, and the incapacitated. Wee Care provides infant clothing, blankets, diapers and more to over 600 families a year! When an emergency arises, babies are lovingly helped in all counties. “It is God who gives life. Let us respect and love human life…” (Pope Frances) Every hospital has a social worker that refers women in need to Wee Care. The program runs completely through generous donations. Please consider giving a monetary donation to give a baby a good start in life. Please make your check payable to Ss. Cyril & Methodius Church and indicate Pro-Life- Wee Care on the subject line of your check. Please place your Lenten Offering Envelope in the collection basket or drop it off in the Parish Office by March 27. Food Pantry Collection- “Lord, when did we see you hungry…” (Mt 25:37) In order to help to support our less fortunate brothers and sisters at Sacred Heart Parish in Imlay City we will be collecting: Non-Perishable Food Items- Canned Goods, Rice, Beans, Cereal and Pasta. Please place your donations in the appropriate box located in the coatroom. All donations should be placed in the box by March 24. Coat Collection Offering: Winter coats are desperately needed by men, women and children who live in poverty in our surrounding communities. “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Heb 10:24) Please challenge yourself to go through your closet and take one coat out to donate to the poor! These coats will be given to our underprivileged neighbors, at both Crossroads and in Imlay City, to help them to keep warm during the extremely cold winter months. Please place your coat in the appropriate box in the coat room off the vestibule. Residence for Homeless- Amelia Agnes Transitional Home for homeless mothers and children is our community neighbor located just one mile north of our parish. The group provides housing and support services to battered and homeless families while assisting moms to become self-sufficient. “It is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.” (Mt 18:14) Mary’s Mantle is a safe haven for expectant mothers. It is the only Catholic residence for pregnant moms in the Detroit area. Since the home opened they have helped 44 mothers and babies! Please consider offering a gift to help a mother, and her new baby or with children, so that they have a place to live temporarily. Please make your check payable to Ss. Cyril & Methodius Church and indicate Residence for Homeless on the subject line of your check. Please place your Lenten Offering Envelope in the collection basket or drop it off in the Parish Office by March 27. Easter Basket Tags for Prison Outreach-“For I know well the plans I have in mind for your, says the Lord… plans to give you a future full of hope.” (Jer 29:11) Over twenty-four thousand inmates go through the Macomb County Jail every year. At any given day there are 1,450 men and women in jail. When an inmate leaves he/she has nothing but the shirt they are wearing and they must begin to get integrated back into society. The inmates need Bibles, stamps, reading glasses and paper while they are in jail. When they are released they often need a temporary residence, bus tickets, food cards and clothing. Your monetary donation will help these unfortunate souls feel they are worthy of love and give them hope as they begin their walk toward healing and wholeness. Please make your check payable to Ss. Cyril & Methodius Church and indicate Prison Outreach on the subject line of your check. Please place your Lenten Offering Envelope in the collection basket drop it off in the Parish Office by March 27. There are also Easter Basket Tags for much needed Gift Cards for Gas and Food for Families in Need. Please put your Egg Tag along with your Gift Card in a Plain Envelope and place it in the collection basket or drop it off in the Parish Office by March 27. May Mary, Mother of the Risen One and of the Church, pray for a blessed Lent! Thank you for all your prayers and your great generosity. Called & Gifted Workshop * Who Am I? Why Am I Here? * NEXT Saturday, February 13 On Saturday, February 13, from 10:00AM—6:00PM, join us in the Father Mikus Hall as we discover answers to these questions together. God is calling you to a unique purpose in life, a work of love that only you can do. Come and begin to discover this work! The Called & Gifted Workshop is a special program that teaches Catholics how to discover their unique spiritual gifts - gifts God gives us all to share with our family, our friends, our workplace, and our community. At the Called & Gifted Workshop we learn about our Catholic understanding of these gifts, and how to start the process of discerning the specific gifts God has given us. At Baptism and Confirmation we receive many gifts from the Holy Spirit. Some of these gifts are for our sanctification and are the gifts that most are familiar with. We also receive gifts (Charisms) that are for the building up and helping the Body of Christ. These Charisms are how God works though you for others. Charisms, or spiritual gifts, are given to all baptized Christians by the Holy Spirit to give them the power both to represent Christ and to be a channel of God’s goodness for people (see CCC 798-801). Join us as we discover how to discern our Charisms and God’s purpose for us in this life. Especially useful for: •Cradle Catholics •Active Parishioners •Young adults •People in transition •New or returning Catholics •Those active in ministry •Parish staff and leadership • People looking for answers! Cost - $25 if registered by February 4 Registering after February 4 will be $30 ---- BOTH payable at the door (cost includes light breakfast, lunch, and a copy of the spiritual gifts inventory and workbook) Register by contacting Rochelle Rosenbaum, (248) 528-1401, or email: [email protected]

Pro-Life Update Dear Parish Family and Visitors, Thank you for all your support of those students who needed assistance to go on the 2016 “Movement in Motion” Youth Bus Trip to DC for the annual March for Life with Right to Life – LIFESPAN. And also, thank you for all your prayers for our safe journey there and back and our health and well being while gone on our 0ver 150 people joined the Rally for Life and Rosary Pilgrimage “Pilgrimage for Life”! It was with a very sad and heavy heart that LIFESPAN had to cancel the trip for all nine buses on Wednesday late afternoon, the day before we would leave. The winter storm that was to descend upon the city between Friday afternoon and into Saturday was of great concern (road conditions especially through the mountains, strong possibility of being stranded on the road when driving back home or being stranded in DC with no safe place to go for shelter, etc.). The safety of the Marchers was of paramount importance to LIFESPAN. The host churches for all the buses were asking us not come to DC as they expected many problems (power outages, not being able to get their parking lots cleared for the buses to drop off the Marchers, no food service for our buses as planned at the host churches, etc.). The disappointment was truly felt by all of us who were looking very forward to the trip and for me personally as the organizer of the trip with all the work that had been put into the planning of the trip for many months. The Crusaders for Life group pulled together a day of remembrance on Friday, January 22, with joining together at the Noon Holy Mass, then going to two local abortion clinics to pray outside them for all the unborn babies, their mommies, their daddies, their families, conversions in the hearts of the abortionists and all those involved in the abortion, etc. Fr. Steve Pullis joined us at the first location and lead the Rosary. Most of you didn’t know he would have been joining our group at the March for Life on Bus 2. He had just signed up the week before and I was keeping it as a surprise! Anyhow, afterwards, there was a celebration of Life with pizza and beverages and a speaker. It helped us all come together and still do something special that day. Thank you so much Crusaders for lifting my spirit and inviting me to be with you! Also, thank you Msgr. Dylag for a beautiful Holy Mass and homily and Father Ben for your continued support and for the beautiful litany you offered at the end of the Holy Mass. In my role as Youth Director at LIFESPAN, I will begin the initial plans for the trip in 2017 with securing host churches and holding the buses once I confirm what day the March will be on. Many of those who signed up for the 2016 trip are hoping to go in 2017. I will keep everyone informed of the plans! May God bless you and your loved ones! Lynn Gura, Pro-Life Ministry

This inspiring program teaches the importance of consecrating ourselves to Jesus, through Mary. This spiritually uplifting program created by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC has already become the 2nd most popular group study program in the nation! In this 6-week program, Fr. Gaitley will take us on an easy to understand journey into the classic teachings of St. Lois de Montfort regarding Marian consecration. He will also be teaching us about the more recent insights on consecration by great contemporary saints such as; St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Saint John Paul II. Fr. Gaitley believes that these three Marian giants have dramatically added to the beauty and richness of Marian consecration and spirituality originally given to us by St Lois de Montfort. "Take this retreat ... Believe me, your life will never be the same." - Johnette Benkovic, Founder and President of "Women of Grace" "Finally an easy way to understand and live out the Marian consecration!" - Vinny Flynn, Best-selling Catholic Author There is no cost to participate in the class. ADORATION 101 * “Behold, I Make All Things New!” This week we reflect on the Beatitude, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7) in our continued meditation before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Since we are in the midst of “The Year of Mercy” it’s fitting that we delve deeper into the mystery that is God’s mercy and understand more fully the actual reality of what it is. There can be a sense of false mercy in today’s world and we must be able to identify the differences or we will be left in a worse condition than before we started. So what is mercy? Some words have seemed to drop out of common usage when people cease to believe in what they stand for. This, on top of our society’s tendency to redefine words, creates a damaging infrastructure on which we are to build our understanding of what we believe. The Church is very specific. She had made sure, through the help of the Holy Spirit Who guides her, that each and every aspect of her faith can be known with all certainty in the way God has intended. The uncertainty of not knowing what words mean will cause much undue division among our brethren and turmoil in our spiritual lives. We cannot assume we know what words mean, or how popular culture defines them, and place our trust in that or else we do ourselves, and others as a result of it, a disservice. It’s dangerous to say the least. First, let’s identify what false mercy is. There is a common understanding today that is mostly unspoken that says, “I’m okay, you’re okay, we’re all okay.” This notion undermines responsibility, accountability and the truth itself as God has established it. We’ll see a widespread acceptance of sin without regard for the moral law and the teachings of Christ’s Church. It disguises itself as being merciful but what it does is simply allows us to remain living in sin and leaves a false perception of God’s mercy. God is merciful towards us insofar as we approach Him on His terms, not our own. Bottom line is we cannot continue to live in sin and still remains friends of God, no matter how difficult it would be to change our ways. God will lavish on us more grace than we can ask for if we truly approach His mercy with a heart contrite and ready to amend it’s evil ways. True mercy is love that overcomes resistance; the resistance of the world, the flesh and the devil in order to take hold of and embrace a new life in Christ. In regards to showing mercy to others, it means that I love in spite of the fact that I am not loved. It means to love those things which cause me difficulty and trouble, namely turning away from sin. It means to love even those who not only don’t love me, but who may oppose me, who may hate me. This is what God’s mercy is towards us. It is His love overcoming resistance. And you know who offers resistance to God’s love—we do. Yet in spite of us, God loves us. That is mercy. We trust that the way of life God has laid down before us is our path to ultimate, lasting happiness and we work in cooperation with it through His grace. When we show mercy towards others, He’s promised to show mercy towards us. It’s a circle of mercy, so-to-speak, in which life is given flavor and depth. The next time you’re before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, ask Him what He wants you to resist, or surrender, that’s in your life so that you may be able to fully receive His mercy. He will meet you right where you’re at and behold, He will make all things new! NEXT WEEK: “Blessed are the pure in heart…” ~ Paul A. Ray
