February 20, 2015 Dear Neighbor, I am pleased to announce that this year’s Our House gala to benefit the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) will take place on Saturday, May 30, 2015. Our House is a festive annual party that transforms HPP’s 3-story family resource center into an elegant evening venue, wherein over 400 guests mix, mingle and dance the night away while celebrating the agency’s impressive work in the community. I hope that you will consider supporting this event as an in-kind Silent Auction donor. You will receive public recognition for the event, in addition to a receipt acknowledging your contribution. The Silent Auction typically helps to raise ~$20,000 for HPP programs and services. Proceeds from the event directly support the agency’s mission to break the cycle of childhood poverty. HPP serves over 4,000 families a year, providing case management, prenatal and parenting support, housing assistance, domestic violence prevention and intervention, mental health services, child welfare support, job training and emergency support of basic needs. Enclosed please find our Silent Auction item pledge form, as well as San Francisco Chronicle’s coverage of last year’s event. Please contact Sharon Bechtol, Volunteer & Donations Coordinator, at 415.546.6756 ext. 381 or [email protected] with questions or for more information. Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to the possibility of partnering with you at Our House! Sincerely,

Our House, Our Mission

HOMELESS PRENATAL PROGRAM  ANNUAL GALA  NEIGHBORHOOD PARTY

Executive Summary The Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) empowers low-income and homeless families, particularly mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood, to find within themselves the strength and confidence they need to transform their lives. Serving over 4,000 families annually, HPP offers case management, prenatal and parenting support, housing assistance, domestic violence services, mental health services, substance abuse support, child welfare support, job training and emergency support of basic needs. The first agency in San Francisco to hire former clients as direct service staff, HPP is unique in that its growth and evolution has been guided, from its earliest days, by the community it serves. HPP’s mission is: in partnership with our families, break the cycle of childhood poverty. In addition to being a leading service provider in the local and regional community, HPP has also recently garnered considerable national attention. The agency was recently featured in the Huffington Post, The New York Times, People Magazine and on CNN and PBS. HPP also presents at various maternal and children’s health conferences across the country and is a part of a federal demonstration grant to guide national best practices regarding family homelessness. In addition, HPP has received many accolades through the leadership of Founder and Executive Director Martha Ryan. Last year, Ryan was awarded both an honorary degree from University of San Francisco and a Medal Award from the University of California, San Francisco.

Event Overview Event Committee: Jennifer Board (Chair), Valerie Alaimo, Victoria Fiore, Jen Greco, Sara Kassabian, Margaret Lynch, Stacy Tran

HPP’s annual Our House celebrates its service to the community by bringing together over 400 supporters, community members and government officials for a jubilant evening filled with live music, cocktails and dancing. Staff-led tours of the agency’s vibrant, three-story home offer visitors a behind-the-scenes glimpse at our life-changing work, and former clients return to tell their inspiring stories of overcoming adversity. The event raises over $200,000 to support the agency’s programs and services. This year HPP is celebrating the spirit of the neighborhood, with local businesses, artists, organizations and members of our community, new and old, in attendance. HPP will be honoring long-time supporter and community advocate, SFGH’s Dr. Daniel Wlodarczyk, for his immense contributions to HPP and San Francisco's most vulnerable populations.

Come meet your neighbor and give back to your community!

Homeless Prenatal Program a dynamo at 25 Catherine Bigelow, Society Columnist Datebook, SF Chronicle

San Francisco (SFGate) -- The word “maverick” is one of those dynamic descriptors too often wasted on the unworthy. But next to the name of Martha Ryan, founder and executive director of the Homeless Prenatal Program, maverick seems almost too mild to describe the dynamism of this dedicated and compassionate public health provider. And 500 friends, family and fans felt the same when they turned out to celebrate Our House, the 25th anniversary gala that raised $185K.

The fete, organized by sisters Meggan and Alexis Bechtol with a Roaring Twenties theme, had a real silver lining, too: Last month HPP’s building was renamed the Lipman Family Building to honor the generosity of board member Barry Lipman and his wife, Marie, who paid off the mortgage on the 26,800-square-foot Potrero Street space. “I started HPP in a closet at the Hamilton Family Center where I was volunteering,” Ryan said as we toured the building. “Our first year, with a staff of three, we served 72 women.” Oh, what a difference 25 years makes: HPP has assisted 85,000 families and delivered healthy and drug-free babies. The program connects clients with housing, health, employment and education programs. HPP also partners with UCSF’s midwifery program to help young women learn to bond with their newborns and even hosts baby showers four

times a year for expectant moms. Just for good measure, Ryan loans building space to the Five Keys Charter School program for previously incarcerated adults. “Whether you’re homeless and pregnant or in jail, education is it,” declared Ryan. “It’s the way out of poverty.” The evening also honored the faculty (led by Francoise Gorfain) and students of Lycée Français de San Francisco, who, for the last 15 years, have baked holiday pies and collected gifts (books, socks) for HPP clients. “This building transformed our program,” said Ryan as she thanked the Lipmans and her first public health mentor, Dr. Dan Wlodarczyk. “Before it was just a location. Now it’s a home.”

HPP Programs HPP promotes healthful living in families with three major goals: 1) Healthy Babies: serve parents as they work to deliver healthy babies and bond with their infants; 2) Safe, Nurturing Environments Where Children Thrive: empower motivated parents with the knowledge and skills necessary to support a child’s healthy development and success; and 3) Economically Stable Families: ensure access to information and resources that facilitate the acquisition of permanent, stable housing and support economic self-sufficiency. HPP serves over 4,000 low-income and homeless families through the programs and services: Promoting family stability, Case Management Services provide ongoing support for individuals and families facing various challenges related to poverty. The Wellness Center offers free prenatal education classes, alternative health services, post-partum groups and other activities to over 500 women annually.

The Housing Assistance Program provides limited, short-term financial assistance and workshops that help families obtain and retain safe and stable housing.

Mental Health Services provide on-site individual, couples, family and group therapy to HPP clients. The Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Program prepares economically disadvantaged women for meaningful careers in community-based organizations. The Community Technology Center (CTC) offers clients access to and training in computer use, the Internet and other technology to assist clients with job and housing searches.

Community Health Workers

The Family Economic Success Program offers free tax preparation services, education in the U.S. Tax Code, assistance with IRS initiated tax issues, and help with obtaining ITINs, as well as support in accessing public benefits.

Parent-Child Playgroup

The free, on-site Childcare Center provides quality childcare for children while their parents participate in services. Childcare staff are supported by a Child Development Therapist and a Child Development Consultant. All work together as needed with parents to assess and encourage positive child development. Emergency Support of Basic Needs are provided in the form of assistance with food, clothing, diapers baby and children’s items and hotel/transportation vouchers in crisis situations. Five Keys Charter School now offers on-site education to help clients complete high school diplomas and GEDs.
