He was b o r n on A u g u s t 2 7 t h 1908 a t Cootamundra i n t h e r i c h w h e a t a n d sheep b e l t o f New S o u t h Wales, t h e l a s t o f f i v e c h i l d r e n b o r n t o George ID] and E m i l y Bradman. The o r i g i n s o f t h e Bradman f a m i l y c a n be t r a c e d back t o t h e S u f f o l k and C a m b r i d g e s h i r e v i l l a g e s of • V i t b e r s f i e l d , H a v e r h i l l and H o r s e h e a t h . The name h a s been w r i t t e n as Bradman a n d , Bradnam o v e r t h e c e n t u r i e s a n d t h e P a r i s h R e g i s t e r s o f S t M a r y s V i t h e r s f i e l d c o n t a i n many e n t r i e s o f b o t h v a r i a t i o n s . At t h e t i m e o f his e m i g r a t i o n he t o o was an a g r i c u l t u r a l l a b o u r e r . D u r i n g this p e r i o d E a s t A n g l i a was i n the grip of the great agricultural depression and many g r o u p s o f agricultural workers b a n d e d t o g e t h e r t o go to Australia, anxious to d i v o r c e themselves f r o m a l i f e o f a g r i c u l t u r a l serfdom. The number o f e m i g r a n t s c l a i m e d by A u s t r a l i a i n 1852 was 95,000, m o s t m a k i n g f o r t h e V i c t o r i a n g o l d f i e l d s , t h o u g h some 9,OS J| w e n t t o l e w S o u t h V a l e s , C h a r l e s Bradman b e i n g one o f there. He s p e n t t h e r e s t o f h i s d a y s a New S o u t h Welshman.
