A special message from the Superintendent…

Greetings West Allis and West Milwaukee Residents, Welcome to the 2014 Fall season with the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation and Community Services Department. We hope you enjoyed your summer and were able to take advantage of our many programs and activities that we offered. Whether you, a family member, or neighbor enrolled in a preschool class or sports camp, swim lessons, exercise program, baseball & softball, attended a field trip or special event, or enjoyed a swim at Liberty Heights wading pool, we hope you had a great experience and made lasting memories this past summer. As we enter fall and the weather cools, the leaves change, and the children head back to school, we encourage and invite you to look through your Activity Guide at the many wonderful offerings. The Activity Guide describes the range of recreation and life-long learning activities that are available to enhance your life over the next several months. We have tried to design our programs with our community members and their families in mind providing all of the information you will need to fill your leisure hours with learning, fitness, relaxation, enjoyment, and socialization. We are a dedicated team of professionals committed to providing beneficial, life-enhancing opportunities for the communities of West Allis and West Milwaukee. We’re here for you! If at any time you would like to talk with us, please feel free to stop by or call (414) 604-4900, we would love to hear from you.

Aikido is one of the best kept secrets in martial arts. Pronounced ahy-kee-do, Aikido is a Japanese art of self-defense employing locks, throws and holds and utilizing the principle of nonresistance to cause an opponent’s momentum to work against them. It is a mix of Jujitsu and Kenjutsu. Join district teacher Matthew Fanning, a member of the Midwest Tomiki Aikido Yudanshakai, in learning the proper technique of Aikido. Driver’s Education Classroom Theory and Behind the Wheel Instruction In partnership with United Driving School the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation Department is happy to offer behind the wheel instruction. Driver’s education is very important to build a foundation for your young driver, but learning to drive does not have to be so serious that it ruins the enjoyment of learning. United Driving School incorporates games, outdoor activities, group activities and even have pizza/donut parties to keep your young driver engaged and excited to drive. Once your teen has accomplished the 30 hours of classroom theory, United Driving School will then schedule behind the wheel instruction for your teen and your teen can complete their driving experience with the same instructor who taught the classroom theory. This is an important milestone for teens, and the experience should be memorable and not forgettable. If you have any questions, you may contact United Driving School at 414-881-0010.

Nordic Walking Nordic Walking uses two specially designed poles to work the upper body while walking. Like cross country skiing, the poles are used by the arms to match each step the person takes. Nordic Walking combines simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full-body walking workout that can burn significantly more calories without a change in perceived exertion or having to walk faster, due to the incorporation of many large core and other upper-body muscles which comprise more than 90% of the body’s total muscle mass and do work against resistance with each stride. In this class you will learn some of the history, techniques and proper form of Nordic Walking and then have the opportunity to put your knowledge to work with personal instruction. Come out and try Nordic Walking today! Poles will be provided for use. Instructor : Ed Urbanski, ANWA Certified Advanced Instructor, Certified Master Instructor of the Exerstride Method of Nordic Walking. Mixed Media Studio This course is a 2-D art class for adults. It is designed to provide flexibility for the individual as a student. Each student is allowed to work in whatever media he/she feels comfortable or finds a need to explore. Students bring to class a 2-dimensional project to work on. Students are encouraged to experiment in new media. The structure of this class is based on the individual student’s personal needs and growth in the area he/she has chosen to work. Each student is counseled by George Mee as the need arises on a one to one basis. No specific lessons are designed for the entire class to follow. There is no required number of projects that must be completed by the end of the course. Each student works at his/her own pace. Videotapes may be shown to develop art knowledge and appreciation. The goal of this course is to increase students’ technical skills in the medium of their choice, to broaden their knowledge for improved artistic composition and expressions, to create a base for critical judgment of their own work, as well as others, and to create a base for non-judgmental aesthetic responses toward art and artists intent. Students need to furnish their own materials for the class.

Adult Enrichment Aikido for Adults

Aikido is one of the best kept secrets in martial arts. Pronounced ahy-keedo, Aikido is a Japanese art of self-defense employing locks, throws and holds and utilizing the principle of nonresistance to cause an opponent’s momentum to work against them. It is a mix of Jujitsu and Kenjutsu. Join district teacher Matthew Fanning, a member of the Midwest Tomiki Aikido Yudanshakai, in learning the proper technique of Aikido. There will be tumbling involved. Just like other martial arts, Aikido has a ranking system and students can earn rank as they study this style of martial arts. Staci will demonstrate how to prepare these recipes and you will observe and sample her recipes. Classes are for ages 14 and up. Fall Harvest of Flavors

So many varieties of produce available in the fall; apples, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, green beans, kale, tomatoes, cabbage, beets, broccoli and the list can go on and on. When you buy produce fresh and in-season it is generally less expensive and more nutritious. When food is not in season locally, it’s either grown in a hothouse or shipped in from other parts of the world, and both affect the taste. Compare a dark red, vine-ripened tomato still warm from the summer sun with a winter hothouse tomato that's barely red, somewhat mealy, and lacking in flavor. You know what I’m talking about! So tonight I am going to create a variety of recipes using fresh local produce to bring you a menu that will explode with flavor and color. You’ll sample…Braised Pork with Apples, Mushrooms, and Calvados, Rosemary Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Caramelized Shallots ,Green Beans with Wild Mushrooms and Pear & Apple Tart Tatin. Tuesday, September 9 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Regional Thanksgiving Sides and Dressings

Breathe some new life into your signature Thanksgiving side dishes with some knock-your-socks-off recipes from around the country. You’ll sample… Nor’easter Succotash, Carolina-style Smothered Green Beans, Idaho Potato Gratin with Black Pepper Cream, Midwestern Wild Rice and Wheat Bread Stuffing with Brats and Dried Cherries, Traditional Southern Cornbread Dressing. 306000.03

Hearty German Inspired Menu

During the middle and late 19th century, Wisconsin and the Milwaukee area became the final destination of many German immigrants fleeing the Revolution of 1848. In Wisconsin they found the inexpensive land and the freedoms they sought. The German heritage and influence in the Milwaukee area is widespread and none is more prominent than the German culinary influence at places like Mader’s, Karl Ratzsch’s, Usingers and more. Today, I’ll prepare a terrific menu with this German heritage in mind. You can sample all of these foods and take home the recipes to prepare for your family…Spinach Salad with Hot Bacon Dressing, Beef Rouladen, Spaetzle, Braised Red Cabbage and Simple Black Forest Torte.

Bite-sized desserts are a “huge” trend. In fact, this trend has made the Top 5 restaurant trends for the past four years, according to the National Restaurant Association. Some of the reasons they are so popular are concern for portion size, holding the line on calories and sugar, and just the plain old urge for fun. So tonight I’ll show you how to make some fabulous Mini-desserts that are big on flavor and beautiful to serve. You’ll sample…Bittersweet Chocolate Bruschetta Bites, Mini Eggnog Cheesecakes with Pomegranate Glaze, Peppermint Bark and Vanilla-Pomegranate Parfaits. Tuesday, December 9 6:30 - 8:30 pm
