• Build-a-Hand teambuilding kits may be ordered online at www.build-a-hand.com or by

calling 800-342-1650.

• Build-a-Hand teambuilding kits come in increments of 10 Program Ready Hands, instruction manuals, blue tool bags and replacement parts. • Please provide complete shipping information and contact e-mail address at the time of the order. All orders will be shipped UPS ground unless otherwise noted. Verification of shipment and receipt will be sent via e-mail.

Room set-up:

• Tables and chairs for participants. • ‘Help Desk’ table for help questions and replacement parts – approximately one desk per 30 hands. • Projector, computer, screen and sound capability. • Water/Snacks as desired. • Microphones/Lavaliers as necessary.

Inviting your guests/describing the program:

• You have the option of disclosing the philanthropic component of the program to your guests/participants prior to the program, or not. There are pros and cons to both. If you want to use the program as a developmental process it is best to keep the philanthropic component a secret that you reveal at the beginning of the program or even later — after the preliminary components and/or proper context-setting has been established. In Odyssey-Live facilitated programs we never disclose the philanthropic component until the moment arrives to begin the project (roughly one hour into a three-hour session). If it is purely a philanthropic endeavor you may choose to describe it beforehand.

Introducing Build-a-Hand

During your Program: Establishing a powerful context:

Establishing the proper context before the Build-a-Hand program begins will allow you to realize the full potential of this program. Just as it is possible to know the Cliffs Notes of a book, it is also possible to build hands for recipients through this program and generate value. However, to truly experience the power of this program it is critical to establish a powerful context — to create a story line that connects to who you are, what you do and where you are going. Just like a good book or movie, it is the stories (and experiences) that surround the main idea that turn the main theme into a truly memorable, relevant and transformational experience. The following ideas are designed to help you determine the most powerful context for your group/organization. More than a philanthropic deed, more than a teambuilding process, more than just good corporate social responsibility — the Build-a-Hand teambuilding program is a radical re-examination of what work is and why we do it. The power of a team comes from purpose, not from the blind repetition of a process. The Build-a-Hand teambuilding program re-connects team members with the purpose of their work, and unlocks the potential of awareness, caring and collaboration in the workplace.

Team members will walk away with powerful lessons to improve results,

relationships and processes — and they will walk proud of themselves, your organization and each other. This time they know when they give their best, together, they can, and do, change the world. The Build-a-Hand program allows participants to experience the importance of giving their best. Giving is the act of putting forth effort to improve the quality of life for another person. This is not just an altruistic, individual act; it is also a practical business necessity for all organizations and a law of commerce. When we provide value to another, an exchange occurs. Too often, we forget that the bottom line of our business — profit — comes from customers choosing our products and services because, given other choices, they recognize that it will improve the quality of their life. We forget that every action, every interaction, impacts our ability to improve the quality of life for others and thus our ability to create relevant, useful products and services. In the fast-paced cadence of business and life it is easy to lose sight of this impact and not “give” as much. And when we lose this, everything unravels.

Introducing Build-a-Hand

Giving your best is the birthplace of innovation, adaptability and teamwork.

It influences commerce, economies, families and communities. So join us as we Build-a-Hand, Build a team, and build lasting and meaningful connections that will transform the way you approach work and life.

How much time should be dedicated to the experience?

The program is designed to be a three-hour process. The following agenda is based on this time frame. We know that some of you will only have half of that time, so we give you the flexibility to create your own timeline with the components that will serve you best. You will need a minimum of 1.5 hours to build the hands, design the carrying cases and show the videos.

Overview of the three-hour design:

The first hour of the three-hour agenda is a prelude to the building of the LN-4 prosthetic hands and transforms the experience into a developmental process. In the first hour you can explore concepts such as collaboration, innovation, change-readiness, time-management, communication, and decision-making. Participants will be able to put these concepts into action during the Build-a-Hand project with a more deliberate approach where they will be able to see the benefits of applying these concepts. The hand-building component then becomes a metaphor for “product” and the recipients become a metaphor for “customer.” In the same way cognitive assessments like Myers-Briggs and SDI bring awareness to individuals and teams, experiential assessments, like the ones you will find here, take it one step further by assembling differing personality types into a functioning, communicative and effective working group.

Optional openings: Hour 0:00-020 Sample one: Today’s teambuilding exercise is an experience that will go deeper than

providing improved interpersonal skills and strengthen networking abilities. You’ll be asked to find value in, and attach relevance to, interactions and behaviors that at first glance might appear obvious. Some of these behaviors and interactions might seem so commonplace that you may question whether they merit any deeper examination at all. Ultimately, you’ll be the best judge of that. Please try to withhold that judgment until the very end of the exercise.

Sample two: Over the next _____hours, we will tap into the potential that we have to make a difference. That difference will be life-changing for the benefactors of our efforts and for many of you it might just change your life as well. We will explore a wide range of team and leadership characteristics through a series of experiential activities, thought provoking discussions and action-planning to improve processes, relationships and results.

Introviews: In a structured format, participants converse with different colleagues discussing a range of questions that serve as ice-breakers and begin to establish the context for the program. See PowerPoint slide deck in the ‘notes’ section for sample Introviews questions and instructions.

Hour 0:20-0:45

Change Now!: Change Now demonstrates the reactions people have towards changing conditions. Participants recognize and discuss their reflexive tendencies and how these influence collaboration, innovation, decision-making, etc. See PowerPoint slide deck in the ‘notes’ section for Change Now instructions .

Hour 0:45-1:00

Five Whys: An interview process (conducted in pairs) is used to uncover the connective values underlying terms like collaboration, teamwork, innovation etc. See Power point slide deck in the ‘notes’ section for Five Whys instructions.

Hour 1:00-1:15

Show Pre Build Video, describe the Build-a-Hand project, give instructions, timelines and any other suggestions, challenges or requests. The Hand Koozies are used as an additional challenge to the team. Invite/suggest that they place the Koozie on their dominant hand for the duration of the assembly. Is it possible? Absolutely. It is a compelling option for two reasons: One, it is entirely possible for them to build the hands with this limitation but they will be forced to use each other much more. Two, it gives them a sense of empathy and an understanding of how much utility they will be providing to the recipients. The Koozies are available to the participants as a keepsake, however, we ask that you return any Koozies not kept by your participants for recycling/reuse.

Using the Build-a-Hand PowerPoint slides

In the Build-a-Hand PowerPoint slide deck provided with your Facilitators Kit you will find a note section on each slide. This can be accessed under the ‘view’ option/setting. On each note page, you will find: • •

Slide concept Instructions

These will provide the information necessary to connect the components of the Build-a-Hand program into a cohesive process. The slide deck is based on the components used during the three-hour agenda. •

team with their decorated bag. These photographs, printed by you and inserted into each respective hand-carrying case, are a nice touch that connects your assembly team to the recipients. It allows recipients to see who built their hand for a more personal connection. If you choose to add the photographs, please print and insert each picture into its respective hand-carrying case before returning/shipping to Odyssey Teams. In most cases this will need to occur after the program unless you have a portable printer.

Help Desk: You will need to have the replacement parts and tools available to help as necessary. Trouble spots for teams include correct orientation of brass pawls, damaged springs, difficulty setting the pins sub-flush, or losing small parts.

9

At the conclusion of your program: Only the finished hand itself and

cuff assembly should be in the decorated hand-carrying case. Please have groups place the completed hand-carrying case into the large plastic bag. This is done to keep the ink from bleeding onto other carrying-cases. Return all markers, tools, rubber bands and small empty bags into the blue tool bag so we may recycle these items. None of these items should be in the hand-carrying case or plastic bag.

A brief history: Ernie Meadows and Odyssey Teams Ernie Meadows and his wife suffered the loss of a child. Meadows, an engineer and inventor, decided he was going to do something for the rest of the world in honor of his daughter’s life. Learning of the hundreds of thousands of children who had lost limbs due to land mines inspired Meadows to invent and design a prosthetic hand that was fully functional and could be made, fitted and used at a fraction of the cost of other prosthetic hands on the market. The Ellen Meadows Prosthetic Hand Foundation was founded. In 2008, Odyssey Teams, a pioneer of philanthropic teambuilding and famous for their Life Cycles™ program had built and distributed more than 10,000 bicycles to children all over the world when they met Mr. Meadows. Odyssey Teams decided to create a program similar to their Life Cycles teambuilding program where the main project would include the building of the LN-4 prosthetic hands. Build-a-Hand™ was born. Through the good deeds of organizations like yours Build-a-Hand™ has generated the funds and provided the assembly of thousands of hands distributed in more than 50 countries.

Introducing Build-a-Hand

Odyssey Teams facilitation techniques/models Established in 1991, we have worked with over 600 companies across the globe. As keynote speakers, facilitators, trainers and coaches for over 20 years we have discovered that true learning occurs when the relevant content connects to thought and feeling. To have a new understanding of terms such as collaboration, change-readiness, thinking outside the box, etc. is key. Everyone is saying it, but how will your team resonate with it in a way that will lead to improved actions and results. Every activity is designed to generate thought and feeling. The art of facilitation is to help them connect those thoughts and feelings to the concepts that will improve their results. The questions we ask are artfully crafted and presented. Listening is important. Creating a safe environment for people to speak authentically is even more important. They will be unconsciously judging: who are you? where are you going? And, can I trust you? The sooner they answer these questions the sooner you will be able to create value together. This requires an honest assessment of you, as the facilitator. Be ready to answer these questions authentically. Be ready to give your all.

The Learning Cycle:

The closure, or debrief, is the process by which we reflect on experiences and discover how they link to different aspects of our lives. This is when learning takes place. Closure is not simply asking random questions. The questions you ask create a path that allows members of the group to think through an experience from beginning to end. This process is called the Learning Cycle. The Learning Cycle is based on the premise that, while the experience is important, it is the process of learning that is more significant. Since each of us experience things in a different way, it is impossible to tell someone what they should have learned or what is important. Participants make these decisions themselves with the Learning Cycle.

Introducing Build-a-Hand

There are five stages to the Learning Cycle: Stage One – The Experience

The experience forms the basis for the rest of the cycle. A structured activity, or community service project can be good experiences from which to create learning.

Stage Two – Describe

In this stage, the facilitator asks the participants about their feelings and reactions to the experience. The focus in this stage is on the individuals’ feelings and experiences. Ask questions such as: • “How did you feel?” • “What did you do?” • “What happened ?”

Stage Three – Interpret

In this stage, participants discuss what went on between group members during the exercise. To process individual reactions into collective ideas, good questions to ask include: • “Why do you feel that way?” • “What caused that particular result or feeling?”

Stage Four – Generalize

In this stage, the group generalizes from this experience to see how it might be reflected in other areas of their lives. Participants are asked to focus on situations in their personal or work lives that are similar to those in the activity. The task is to identify similarities and state principles that they can apply to other situations. Some questions that could be asked are: • “What did you learn from the experience?” • “What other similar situations have you experienced?” • “How does this relate to your work life?”

Stage Five – Apply

Finally, participants can decide on a course of action for the future. As a facilitator, ask questions such as: • “What do you want to remember from this experience?” • “What would you do differently in a similar situation?” The Learning Cycle: 1975 Annual Handbook for Group Facilitators, University Associates

Quality Control Test

Please be very careful and complete the test. The LN-4 Hand must pass in all areas to be given to a recipient.

Visual inspection – all pins, screws and side bolts sub flush with exterior and tight. Mechanical inspection – Attach the plastic cuff to the bulk hand for leverage.

Completely close and release both digits at least five times. Completely close and release each digit individually at least five times. Close digits to align the tips with the fixed digits (a partial close) and open.

Audio inspection –

Listen for strength in the ratcheting of geared digits. Both digits should be robust and similar to each other in ratcheting sound and feel. Slowly close digits starting in the fully open position.

Repair:

If ratcheting sounds weak or quiet, check for damaged compression springs by removing outside fixed rigid digits.

Repair: If digit does not fully open with a clean snap, check for misalignment between the

digit pin and the compression spring. Replace compression spring in all instances if damaged. Geared digit sticks in between rigid digits – check for excess plastic and check for alignment of side digits. If 4 side bolts are over tightened it can pinch the geared digit and restrict movement.
