“Welcome everyone to Diversity training. My name is ________ and I will be facilitating this training today. This training will help mentors to identify what diversity is and how to effectively respond to diverse situations while in service. Only by addressing diversity in all of its forms will participants be able to recognize that differences are what make our program strong. True diversity involves recognizing our differences and making them work to our advantage, both as an individual and as a team. Divide the room into groups of four. Each group will be examining a case. Have groups answer each question using the ABE Model Handout (reference page 5 for handout)

Ground Rules

3 minutes

Here you want to set some ground rules and expectations for how your participants should behave and converse during this training. Tell your participants…. 

“This workshop requires you to think about your own thoughts feelings and beliefs and articulate them. Please use “I” statements and speak for yourself not for any group. 1801 Miccosukee Commons Drive, Suite 200 Tallahassee, FL 32308 www.floridacompact.org (850) 488-7782

 

As a facilitator, my job is to provide a space where each of you can feel comfortable speaking. I would like for each of you to speak at least one time during this training. I would like to hear everyone’s input as we proceed further in this training.”

Be sure to state the house keeping information (i.e. where are the restrooms and water fountains.)

Icebreaker

10 minutes

Materials:  Color Dots— ¾” round (MACO MR1212-11) some dots should be the same color, a few that are mixed color, and one or two of one color. o Sticker dots can be found in different sizes and colors at Office Depot. You will need to purchase these prior to the training session, OR find like materials to complete icebreaker. Directions: The facilitator should tell everyone to remain silent. Place a dot on the back of each participant in the room. To begin the activity, tell everyone: (NOTE: it is important to say it word-for-word) “Without talking, group yourselves according to your symbol.” Encourage the group to move about, but do not provide any help. People will most likely group themselves according to color. Give them a few minutes and a 30-second warning before ending. Discussion Questions:  How did you organize yourself into groups? What was your symbol?  Indicate what your specific instructions were. You asked them to group themselves according to their “symbol.” The group most likely grouped themselves according to their color. Reiterate the “symbol” was a dot or circle.  Did you self-organize? Do we do this to others?

“Today we will be looking at diversity by studying four different cases from the ABC show “What Would you do?” Each case is different so please be attentive to each scenario because we will be discussing and evaluating each issue. These experiments are based in real environments so please be aware that some of the content may be offensive to some viewers. Please look at the ABE Model handout that I have passed out to you. This handout will be a rubric for you to analyze, brainstorm, and evaluate each case. With your group you will answer the questions for each case and we will discuss your answers at the end of the presentation.” Count off each participant by four. All the ones will be in a group; twos will be in another group, threes in a group, and fours until all the participants have been placed in a group. Key Terms *Facilitators Note – Read key terms from presentation Mentoring and Diversity Facilitator Says: “As a mentor there are many goals that you want to meet while working out in the field. You want to help mentees establish many relationships with a broad range of people. Keep minority mentees motivated by investing in them and encouraging them to succeed. Encourage and help mentees to develop relationships with persons with diverse backgrounds. Ask the remaining question. Allow participants about 3 minutes to reflect on thoughts and feelings about presentation.  “What happens when we fail to accept the differences between each other?” After the Prezi presentation has been completed have each group present their case according to the ABE Model Handout.
