Exploration Grants for Independent Research Group Leaders Programme Objectives The Exploration Grants are intended to enable outstanding research group leaders involved in basic research in medicine, biology or chemistry, to investigate innovative ideas and new lines of research quickly, with a minimum of bureaucracy, and thus, for example, to undertake the preparatory work necessary for research proposals to the DFG or ERC. The grants are not for projects that constitute a logical next step of your research. They are also not available for projects that are planned or in progress under other funding arrangements. Extent of Funding You can apply for a one-off grant of € 60,000 to € 80,000. The grant can be used for personnel and direct project costs (e. g. consumables, minor equipment) as needed. Applications for the group leader’s salary as well as applications solely for the purpose of procuring equipment and/or consumables will not be considered. Conditions of Application You have earned your doctorate with distinction and no more than 12 years ago, have published outstanding papers during your academic career to date and should possess substantial international experience. Your research is basic research in medicine, biology or chemistry; the foundation, however, does not award grants to purely botanical and zoological projects. You have been leading an independent research group at an academic institution in Germany for at least two years. Your publication record already shows your scientific independence (i. e. you have published at least two last-author papers). The project can demonstrably not be pursued under existing funding arrangements, and no application for funds has been or will be submitted to any other organization for this project before the foundation’s decision. Formal Requirements for the Grant Application Your application must contain the following documents (detailed information see Appendix): 1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 6. 7.

Academic CV including awards, fellowships and research grants previously received Diplomas List of publications (numbered and including full list of authors, full paper title, journal title, volume and issue details, page range of article). Please list all your publications and use distinct marks for first- and last-authorships. Please use separate sections for (i) original articles (published or accepted/in press), (ii) reviews, and (iii) manuscripts submitted or in revision. Do not include posters or oral presentations at scientific conferences. Project proposal Employer’s statement of the kind expected by the DFG for Emmy Noether group leaders assuring your independence One copy each of all papers currently in print or submitted for publication, as well as of your five most important published papers Data consent (see pp. 5, 6)

Selection Procedure The decision on whether to grant funds is made by the Executive Committee of the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation on the basis of recommendations by the foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board and external peer-reviews. You can recommend potential reviewers and may also name (giving reasons) scientists to whom your proposal should not be presented for evaluation.
