Explanation of Sanctuary Art The Bible tells us that God stitches and knits us together. He takes raw material and pieces it together to make beautiful garments out of our souls. He sees the rawness there and he takes it to make something unique and different based off each person. Just like quilts or anything handmade the artist takes pieces and brings them together making something beautiful. We are His quilts and we are wonderfully made. Banners ~~~ Marcía Jones

Opening Hymn “Rejoice, the Lord is King” All

Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore; Rejoice, give thanks and sing, And triumph evermore; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, I say, rejoice! Jesus, the Savior, reigns, The God of truth and love; When he had purged our stains He took his seat above; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, I say, rejoice! His kingdom cannot fail, He rules o’er earth and heaven, The keys of death and hell Are to our Jesus given; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, I say, rejoice! Rejoice in glorious hope! Jesus, the Judge, shall come, And take his servants up To their eternal home. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, I say, rejoice! Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, I say, rejoice! Rejoice, I say, rejoice! words Charles Wesley, 1744; music Nathan Partain, 2003

Prayer of Adoration

2

Prayer of Confession based on 1 Peter 3:14-16 Leader

We read that when we suffer for the sake of righteousness, we will be blessed.

People

But outside of the church we are apt to avoid saying anything of the hope we have in Christ to maintain status quo, fearing what might happen to us if we were to proclaim Jesus’ name.

Leader

In our hearts we are to honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks us for a reason for the hope we possess, doing so with gentleness and respect.

People

But again God, out of fear of those who would bring threats against us, we shrink away from these opportunities, saying “we don’t have the time for it” or “what good would it do anyway.”

All

Lord Jesus, forgive us of our sin and empower us by your Spirit to speak boldly of you without fear.

Assurance of Pardon in the Gospel based on 1 Peter 3:18 Leader

If you have confessed your sins in Jesus’ name you are forgiven.

People

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

Song of Thanksgiving “The Lord will Provide” All

The birds, without garner or storehouse, are fed; From them let us learn to trust God for our bread. His saints what is fitting shall ne’er be denied Just as long as it’s written, “The Lord will provide.” Though troubles assail us and dangers affright, Though friends should all fail us and all foes unite, Just one thing secures us, whatever betide, His Spirit assures us, “The Lord will provide.” Refrain: And this promise remains, Our Lord has redeemed us, Our Lord will provide Through all ages unchanged, Our Lord has redeemed us, Our Lord will provide In our want, in our pain, Our Lord has redeemed us, Our Lord will provide Faithful all of our days. When Satan assails us to stop up our path, And courage all fails us, we stand but by faith. He cannot take from us, though oft he has tried, This heart glad’ning gospel, “The Lord will provide.” We’re told we are weak, and our hope is in vain, The good that we seek we never shall obtain, But when such suggestions, our graces have tried, This answers all questions, “The Lord will provide.”

[Refrain]

No strength of our own and no goodness we claim; Yet, since we have known of the Savior’s great Name, We run to this strong tow’r and for safety we hide: For the Lord is our power, “The Lord will provide.” When life sinks apace, and death is in view, The word of His grace shall comfort us through, Not fearing or doubting, with Christ on our side, We hope to die shouting, “The Lord will provide.” words: John Newton, 1775, alt words and refrain by Nathan Partain; music: Nathan Partain, 2012

Song of Thanksgiving “’Tis so Sweet” All

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, And to take him at his Word; Just to rest upon his promise, And to know, “Thus says the Lord!” Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! O how sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to trust his cleansing blood; And in simple faith to plunge me ’Neath the healing, cleansing flood! Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to cease; Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace. Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend; And I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end. Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er. Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust him more! words Louisa M. R. Stead, 1882; music William J. Kirkpatrick

Prayer of Devotion Children’s Worship is for ages 4 through kindergarten (note the change from last year when the age range was 4 – 1st grade), and is a time for children to worship through song, Bible stories and response (art or story play). Children will return to the sanctuary before communion, and parents can pick them up at that time. Visitors are welcome, and parents are always invited to attend with their children. 5

Offering of Gifts and Service Offertory “The Lord, My Savior, is My Light” Ensemble

The Lord, my Saviour, is my light; What terrors can my soul affright? While God my strength, my life is near, What potent arm shall make me fear? Should num’rous hosts besiege me round, My steadfast heart no fear shall wound: Tho’ war should rise in dread array, God is my strength, my hope, my stay. This only boon my heart desires, For this my ardent wish aspires: In his own house to spend my days, My life devoted to his praise When troubles rise, my guardian God Will hide me safe in his abode! Firm as a rock my hope shall stand, Sustain’d by his almighty hand. Should ev’ry earthly friend depart, And nature leave a parent’s heart; My God, on whom my hopes depend, Will be my father and my friend. This only boon my heart desires, For this my ardent wish aspires: In his own house to spend my days, My life devoted to his praise O teach me, Lord, thy sacred way, Uphold my steps, nor let me stray; While enemies and fears alarm, Extend thy kind, thy guardian arm.

Scripture Acts 4:23-31 Reader

When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, 23

“‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’— for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. 27

Todd Dawkins Facing Opposition of Kingdom Work

7

Community Group Questions

1) How do you feel knowing that in kingdom work, opposition is ultimately being levied against Jesus and not you? 2) In what ways does God display his sovereignty in Acts 4:23-31? How might God’s sovereignty bring one comfort? How might it bring distress? 3) In what ways do you experience opposition in doing kingdom work … in your places … in your hearts? 4) In what ways might you be able to speak the word of God with boldness? What keeps you from doing this? What might God do to help you to do this? Children’s Question: What keeps you from speaking to your friends about Jesus? What might God to do to help you to do this?

Call to Communion and Prayer Guidelines for the Reception of Communion Redeemer welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and who are members of congregations which proclaim the gospel to receive Communion with us. We will be coming forward for the distribution of Communion. Please eat the bread privately, and then drink the cup together with us after everyone has returned to their seats. Clear cups (located in the interior rings) contain grape juice. Red cups (exterior ring of tray) contain wine. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are able to partake of Communion.

Prayers Prayer for Guidance to Truth God, I don’t know how I feel about what I have heard today but I want to trust that you are good, that you are loving and that you are just. I want to know if you are the true God. If you are there would you guide my soul to the truest truth. I don’t want to be tricked or believe a lie. I don’t want to believe in something just to make me feel better. Please God, lead me to the truth. Prayer of Belief and Repentance Jesus, I believe that you are who you say you are: the Son of God and the savior of broken people like me. I need forgiveness. I need to be made new and to start over again. I now turn away from all I have been doing. I turn away from my self-centered life. I turn my whole heart toward you. I believe that when you were crucified, you took all of my evil and somehow you gave me all of your beauty. I invite your Holy Spirit to live in me. I do not want to live for myself any more. I want you to lead my life. I want to know you and to receive your love for me. Please teach me and protect me and guide me. I am yours. I ask these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.

8

Prayer of Doubt and Faith God, I don’t really believe all of this but there is a part of my heart that knows there is truth and goodness here. I am confused by the fact that there are so many things that I don’t understand or that make me angry about you. There are also so many things that fill my heart with hope and many things that draw me to you and I want to put my trust in you. God, you say I can come to you and ask for anything so if you are real, please give me the faith I need to believe. Give me the desire to continue to seek after you. Keep my heart from self-deception. Protect me from any evil misleading or binding spirits. Calm my fears. Soften my cynicism. Be patient with me and if you are God, please don’t let me go but instead let me know that you are real. I have a little faith, help me in my doubt.

Song of Celebration “My Help, My God (Psalm 42)” Ensemble

Why are you so full of heaviness? Why are you disquieted within? O my soul, O my soul. As the deer longs for the water brooks, So my soul it longs, it thirsts for you. O my God, O my God. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. My help, my God! Deep calls unto deep like ocean waves, All your floods and rapids on me break. Oh my soul, O my soul. I will say unto my God, my strength, “How is it you have forgotten me? O how long? O how long?” Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. My help, my God! Yahweh grants his kindness in the day Through the night his song, it is with me. Oh my God, O my God. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. Put your trust in God, I will yet give thanks to him. My help, my God! Sandra McCracken, 2015

Song of Celebration

“All Those who Sow Weeping (Psalm 126)” Ensemble

Our mouths they were filled, filled with laughter. Our tongues they were loosed, loosed with joy. Restore us, O Lord. Restore us, O Lord. Although we are weeping, Lord, help us keep sowing, The seeds of Your Kingdom, For the day you will reap them. Your sheaves we will carry, Lord, please do not tarry. All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy. The nations will say, “He has done great things!” The nations will sing songs of joy. All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy. Isaac Wardell, 2012

Valediction based on Psalm 20 Leader

I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he will answer him from his holy heaven with the saving might of his right hand.

People

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright.

All 10

O LORD, save the king! O LORD, answer us when we call.

Departing Hymn “My Hope is Built” All

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest upon unchanging grace; In every rough and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. His oath, his covenant, his blood Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my Hope and Stay. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. When I shall launch in worlds unseen, O may I then be found in him; Dressed in his righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. words: Edward Mote 1834, music: William Bradbury 1863

Community Group Ministry Our community group ministry is a driving force here in that it is not just a bible study that takes place for an hour each week. Instead it is a ministry focused on spiritual formation and Kingdom growth through community. Discipleship and evangelism are best carried out in a community context, and our groups provide the context for this at Redeemer. Community groups are a place beyond Sunday worship where the Redeemer spiritual community is strengthened. Together we learn to love, shepherd, nurture, disciple, and encourage one another. We are built up in our faith and learn what it means to follow Christ. We learn to share the gospel with one another and with those in our neighborhoods—planning and doing evangelism and mercy in our neighborhoods.
