Our Sanctuary is Back! Come on by if you haven’t already and check out our sanctuary’s new clean, sharp look! We can’t possibly list all of the people who helped make the renovation possible. Thank you to all the people who demonstrated their faith in Beth Shalom by buying more than $110,000 of our bonds. We spent every penny generated to pay for the repairs and our new HVAC control system. Thanks go to all the people who did the back-breaking work associated with moving pews and prepping for painting. We thank Dan Biber for his expert guidance, Vasile Havrisciuc and Richard Racusin for making the workers feel welcome, and the office staff who handled a host of logistics. Message from Rabbi Gamer

MAZAL TOV!

Passover Thoughts As we quickly approach the Passover holiday, I want to share some thoughts with you about one particular ritual that takes place before Passover – the ritual “search for hametz.” The opening lines of the first Mishnah of tractate Pesachim introduce the subject: “The night of the 14th of Nisan we check for hametz by the light of a candle.” From this Mishnah we learn that the evening before the 1st Seder we search our homes for hametz and that it should to be done by candlelight. The Shulchan Arukh, the great medieval code of Jewish Law, says that the search is so important that one should not engage in any work, eat a meal, or, if one has a fixed time for evening study, you should postpone it until after the search! You can tell that this is very important when the rabbis push off or cancel studying Torah. There is a Hasidic teaching on this line of Mishnah that I find personally meaningful. Passover offers us a unique opportunity. Not only do we search for the physical hametz that is in our homes, but we should also do a search for our spiritual hametz. We should take time to look at ourselves and to search ourselves for those things that we would consider hametz. When we do find them, we should do our best to cleanse ourselves of those items, to make ourselves better people. The second line of the Mishnah is: “Any place where hametz has not entered we do not need to check.” Here, we learn that the search for hametz has to take place anywhere we would take hametz. If we eat in our bedroom or in our car, we have to check there. If we eat while we read, we have to flip through the pages of the book to make sure there is no hametz there. Conversely, if we never bring food into a room, then, according to the Mishnah, we do not need to check there. There is another Hasidic teaching on this second line of the Mishnah. When we do the search for hametz, we only need to search in places where we might have put hametz. We are not responsible for our neighbor’s hametz. This teaching applies this principle to our spiritual cleansing as well. We are responsible for searching for hametz in ourselves. We are not responsible for the personal hametz of others. I wish us all a happy, healthy, kosher and hametz-free holiday!

From the President … Marie Slotnick Miriam Henya bat Tzvi Hersh v’Rasha. That’s me… in Hebrew. I’ve always been happy with my Hebrew name because it links me with a dynamic woman in the Torah who truly fleshes out the Exodus narrative. (A little known fact about Miriam is that it was she who convinced the other Israelite women it would be better to expend their efforts packing to leave Egypt rather than staying and having to kasher everything for Pesach.) One of the stories we know and love about Miriam is how she led the Israelite women in song and dance after everyone emerged from the parted Sea of Reeds. In Exodus 15 we read: Then Miriam the prophetess held a timbrel in her hand and all the women followed her, dancing with their own timbrels. Miriam chanted for them: “I will sing to the Lord who has triumphed gloriously; the horses and drivers have been hurled into the sea.” (Exodus 15) Because of this reference, women all over the world sing and dance and keep rhythm on all sorts of tambourines and percussion pieces. At our own Women’s Seder (April 8 at 6:00 p.m., in case you haven’t RSVP’d yet), we all clap and sing loudly “Miriam’s Song” written by Debbie Friedman (z”l) the final verse of which is: [Feel free to sing along.] “And Miriam the Prophet took her timbrel in her hand,/And all the women followed her just as she had planned./ And Miriam raised her voice with song./She sang with praise and might,/ We’ve just lived through a miracle, we’re going to dance tonight.” Now when contemplating the above, one might legitimately ask, “Who in the world packs a hand drum when there is hardly room for a bowl or a water jug??!!!” Ah, but Miriam and the other women were so confident “…that God would work miracles for them that they had brought timbrels along from Egypt, anticipating that God would give them cause to celebrate.” (Etz Hayim, 413). During this Pesach season, may you and those you love pound loudly on your timbrels and sing with full voices as you celebrate together all the miracles of your lives. Chag kasher v’sameach.

SUNDAY, APRIL 6 MINCHAH, MA’ARIV AND A MOVIE: BROKEN WINGS (2002) Please join us to help make the minyan at 5:00 p.m. and stay for the movie. You’ll have an opportunity to order dinner (self-funded). Popcorn and beverages will be provided. Directed by Nir Bergman and starring Orly Silbersatz Banai, Maya Maron, and Nitai Gaviratz, this film was the winner of 9 Israeli Film Academy awards. It focuses on the difficulties a mother and her four children have in coping with the sudden death of their husband/father. Preoccupied with their own misery, the family is barely a family anymore. When another tragedy strikes, will they be able to support one another? In Hebrew with English subtitles.

Sisterhood … Fran Hildebrandt It’s hard to believe that April is finally here! Spring is hopefully peeking around the corner! We have had a terrible winter - cold and snowy, but it hasn’t kept Sisterhood from being active and busy in all our winter activities. Kol HaKavod to Phyllis Weeks and her committee, consisting of Helene Robbins, Shelia Levine, Bobbie Lewis, and Susan Friedman for an amazing Sisterhood Education Day! Their program on the Shanghai Ghetto was especially meaningful since our own Anna Lindemann spoke about her personal experience living there at that time. Hopefully you plan to attend the Women’s Seder. It is a shared project between Sisterhood and the Congregation. A special thank you to Linda Bell, who chairs the Women’s Seder committee, as well as to Gretchen Weiner, Mandy Garver, Marie Slotnick, and Shelia Levine. Everyone had a wonderful time last year (and I know they will this year) and these ladies prove that they can wear more than one hat at the same time! Looking ahead, there is still time to work on our handicraft project from home or at Coffee and Crafts. We‘re hoping to knit hats and scarves for our shelter guests next year. Please contact Anne Greenstein to answer questions and to obtain the pattern. If you haven’t already done so, please make sure to make your reservation for this year’s Donor Dinner. We are pleased to announce that our honoree is Julie Grodin, who has been an active member of Sisterhood! It’s not too late to put an ad in our ad book honoring her. Contact Marylyn Sternberg and/or Vicki Salinger for more information. I hope that you have been staying warm. I look forward to seeing you at our events. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email if you have any questions or comments. B’Shalom, Fran P.S. Please check out the Sisterhood bulletin board. I hope to have pictures of our Author Event as well as Education Day on the board near the office.

Rabbi Nelson served Beth Shalom and the larger Jewish community from 1972 to 2008. The list of his memberships and chaplaincies would fill two columns of this month's Hakol. Musical Kabbalat Shabbat followed by dinner at CBS Friday April 25th 6:00 p.m.

From the Executive Director… Sheldon Freilich

INTRODUCING... ILENE AND NEIL CANTOR

The Talmud relates that Rabbi Akiva responded to a question that G-d could easily provide personally for the poor, but He chose to give each of us the merit of giving tzedakah (charity).

Ilene is from Westchester, NY, and Neil is from Richmond, VA. Both grew up in observant Conservative Jewish families, and they share a love of art, reading, baking, their work, and their son Robby.

Maimonides explains that we are judged by the number of our deeds– that it is better to give one dollar of charity 100 times than 100 dollars at one time. Tzedakah is not performed for the poor person’s sake, but to enable the giver to emulate G-d through meritous deeds. So too, with respect to the support of Jewish institutions: G-d could provide for the Jewish institutions without any human help, but He chooses to funnel His support through human agents. Those agents must realize that their “support” for Jewish life is in fact support for themselves. From Proverbs, the Sages tell us that to “cling” to the support for Jewish institutions is like clinging to the tree of life, as G-d does not deny reward for any good deed. Beth Shalom is your center of Jewish life, dedicated to everyone who wants to experience Judaism: from 18-month old children in Gan Shalom, children in our Religious School, adults in our educational classes, families in our daily and weekly religious services, to our many family events. But, we need your financial support for the financial viability of our synagogue community. Our synagogue is not yet fiscally strong. Member dues alone do not cover the synagogue’s expenses. A number of members are on adjustments due to family circumstances. Donations are a critical component of our financial existence. And, the end of our fiscal year is a challenging period as expenses exceed our income.

Enrich your life by making your synagogue financially stable: Increase your giving level. Support the sanctuary renovation. Commit to keeping your dues and tuition payments current and fully paid by April. Volunteer your time to our many activities. Remember: Support of Jewish life and institutions is in fact a meritous deed that supports you! (With thanks to Rabbi Zev Leff and www.aish.com for some of the insights in this column.)

The Cantors met in 1988 at Northeastern University in Boston, taking Journalism classes, and started dating in 1989. After graduation, Neil returned to Richmond to work in the family law firm, Cantor and Cantor; and Ilene went to Maine and became a TV anchor in Presque Isle. He called, she called, and they married in 1994. After two years in his father’s firm, Neil decided to go to law school. He was accepted by seven law schools, and the decision was to go wherever Ilene got a TV job. She got a position as a TV anchor on WILX, channel 10 in Lansing; MI. Thus, Neil went to Thomas Cooley Law School, which he loved. They lived in East Lansing for three years, becoming active in the Jewish community. When Neil graduated, he got a job with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Ilene was offered a TV anchor job at WNEM, channel 5 in Saginaw/Bay City, and they moved to Flint.

They became very active in Jewish life in Flint, in their shul, Beth Israel, and in the Jewish Federation. After 12 years Neil decided he wanted to change his career path, to be more involved with the Jewish youth of today. He learned of an opening at Hillel of Metro Detroit, applied and became Director of Jewish Student Life, a fulfillment of his life’s dream: of engaging and helping Jewish students in their Jewish journey. “This is the age when Judaism becomes important,” Neil says. He brings many students home to join them for Shabbat dinners. Ilene, on the other hand, while on an assignment at Hurley Medical Center, was offered a job in their PR department, which she accepted. Today, she is the head administrator of the hospital’s entire Marketing & PR Department. She is also working on her Master’s for Strategic PR through online studies via George Washington University, They decided to move closer to Neil’s work and moved into Huntington Woods in April, 2010. Their beloved son, Robby, was born a month later. Ilene now commutes to Flint. When everything settled down, they went shul shopping. In 2013, they chose Beth Shalom because they were so warmly welcomed. It was the right size and fit for them, and they love the variety of classes the shul offers: the cooking classes, the Melton Family values class, and intend to take more. Neil volunteered during the last Shelter Week and can’t wait to become more involved.

We are so very fortunate that this happy, loving family has decided to make Congregation Beth Shalom their religious home. —Fritzi Roth

‘Twas the Night Before Pesach (April 13)

MECHIRAT CHAMETZ SALE OF CHAMETZ 5774 / 2014 PESACH this year begins on MONDAY NIGHT, APRIL 14. The search for leaven (BEDIKAT CHAMETZ) is done Sunday night, APRIL 13. According to Jewish law, any leaven (chametz) owned by a Jew during the Pesach festival is forbidden for use. You should therefore attempt to “use up” as much as possible of your chametz products prior to Pesach. Since it is unlikely that you can dispose of all CHAMETZ before the approach of PESACH, you should arrange for MECHIRAT CHAMETZ, the sale of all leavened products which remain, covered and locked away during Pesach. Complete the attached authorization and mail it to the synagogue office before Monday, April 13, at the address below. It is customary to make a charitable donation, checks should be made payable to Congregation Beth Shalom.

We wish each and every one of you and your family a joyous and healthy Pesach, a Chag Kasher V’same’ach!

Rabbi Robert Gamer Congregation Beth Shalom 14601 West Lincoln Road Oak Park, Michigan 48237 Date :____________________________ I hereby authorize you to act as my agent in selling the chametz in my home and/or business premises for the year 5774 located at:

Searching for Chametz The search for chametz is performed the evening before Pesach by the light of a candle or flashlight. Before the search most people distribute a few pieces of chametz around the house so that the search is successful. Any chametz found is traditionally brushed into a wooden spoon with a feather. Some choose to bag the chametz to avoid spilling any of it. Here are the steps involved in the search: 1) Say the blessing:

2) Search rooms for chametz 3) Collect the pieces of chametz. 4) Recite the formula for nullifying the chametz in a language that you understand:

‫שׁוּתי ְדּלָא חֲ ִמ ֵתּהּ ְוּדלָא‬ ִ ‫ירא וַ חֲ ִמיעָ ה ְדּ ִאכָּא בִ ְר‬ ָ ‫כָּל חֲ ִמ‬ ‫אַרעָ א‬ ְ ‫בִ עַ ְר ֵתּהּ ְוּדלָא יְ ֽ ַדעְ נָא לֵהּ לִ בָּ טֵ ל וְ לֶהֱ וֵ י הֶ פְ ֵקר כְּ עַ פְ ָרא ְד‬ All the sourdough and chametz in my possession that I have not seen and not eradicated is hereby nullified and made like the dust of the earth. 5) Set aside the collected chametz until morning.

Disposing of Chametz All chametz in your possession must be disposed of or sold (use the form on this page). Traditionally, the disposal of chametz is done by burning it, but other methods are also acceptable, such as flushing it down the toilet, scattering it to the wind, or putting it in a public garbage can. Yom Tov Flame and Candle Lighting On Yom Tov, kindling a new flame is not permitted; however, the use of an existing fire for cooking or other purpose is permitted. In order to be able to light candles the second night, you will need to light a candle that will last at least 25 hours. Traditionally, people use yahrzeit candles for this purpose. Light this candle just before lighting the Yom Tov candles on Monday night. Candle lighting time for Monday, April 14 is 7:55 p.m. The blessings for Monday night are:

Update on Repairs to the Sanctuary By the time you read this, repairs to the sanctuary will have been completed, and we will have celebrated Max Goldstein’s Bar Mitzvah in our newly-restored sanctuary. A team of more than 30 members of our Congregation came out to move and re-install the pews. We ARE Beth Shalom. As such projects go, it turned out to be a bigger job than originally expected. The initial problem was that paint or plaster seemed to be cracking and peeling on the ceiling. It turned out to be a sprayed-on acoustical layer that was delaminating. We thought we would scrape it and then just plaster over it, but the layer below that was not stable enough to do that. So it all had to come down, including the wire mesh lath. It was the most expensive part of the job, and this work was performed by Probe Environmental. Next, we brought in Decorating by Dante to paint the walls. Cary Lieberman, Rachel Schwartz, and Allen Wolf helped the painters. After more than a week of masking, covering with plastic, scraping, plastering, sanding and caulking, the painting part was relatively easy. The paint color is aptly named Snowbound. Then Joe Lewis and Allen Wolf hung plastic to protect the walls before SealTech sprayed on a layer of insulation on the steel deck ceiling. The next major step was putting in a new ceiling. Impressive Tile followed the contours of the old ceiling to retain the magnificent appearance for which our shul is known. The carpeting and tapestry received a welldeserved professional shampooing. Then the volunteers returned, and the tricky task of putting the pews back in the same position was undertaken. We decided to leave out a few rows to create an area more conducive to wheelchairs and strollers. —Allen Wolf
