ETON COLLEGE Head of Information Technology Job description and further particulars

Eton College is seeking to appoint a Head of IT as the senior member of its IT delivery team, responsible for the effective and efficient management, control, development and improvement of IT provision throughout Eton College and its related activities. Although Eton’s IT infrastructure is in many ways similar to that of any medium-sized business, applicants must be interested in, and in sympathy with, the aims of Eton as a school and as a charitable foundation, and therefore understand the difference between an educationally-driven set of goals and those of other organisations where profit may be a main measure of success.

Background Eton College was founded by Henry VI in 1440 for 70 King’s Scholars. The central purpose still remains education and, to this end, it runs a secondary school of the highest possible standard for approximately 1,300 boys aged 13-18. All pupils board at the school. The demand for places is strong. Eton has for many years given a high priority to providing public benefit by widening access through subsidising pupils’ fees, running educational holiday courses and making many of its facilities available for public use. One in five boys receives some form of financial assistance with school fees. There are 160 masters and around 600 other staff including dames (matrons), visiting music teachers, domestic staff in the 25 boarding houses and in the central dining hall, technicians, groundsmen, pool attendants, administrative staff, security, cleaners, and a large buildings department. The school and its immediate grounds and playing fields extend over 400 acres from the north end of Eton High Street to the M4 by Slough, bounded on the East by the Thames and on the West by the railway. The site is well located for motorway connections and both main-line and suburban railways. There are some 400 school buildings and properties; and a 2,000 metre rowing lake at Dorney, which was the London 2012 venue for rowing and flat-water canoeing. The department is currently managed by the Director of School Administration and IT, who is a member of Senior Management Team. The new post of Head of IT, who will report directly to the Director of School Administration and IT, is being created to separate day-to-day operational management and delivery of the school’s short and medium term IT goals from the longer-term strategic aims of Eton College maintaining its status as a world-leading boarding school and developing a similar presence in online and “blended” education.
