PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION • DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION

One hundred thousand inhabitants and a very favourable location about 100 kilometres east of Prague; remarkable history as well as rich and vibrant social life; ravishing scenery at the confluence of Labe and Orlice rivers - this is Hradec Králové - one of the most beautiful urban centres of the Czech Republic. The first written reference about the city dates back to 1225. The architects of the likes of Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár have given a brand new face to the city at the beginning of the last century. Hradec Králové elegantly combines Gothic style with Renaissance as well as Baroque with modern architecture. The White Tower is overseeing the entire city. Right next to the tower you will find the Holy Ghost cathedral with the altar painting by Petr Brandl, the bishopric grounds and former Jesuitical dormitory, the St. Mary’s Assumption church and other national treasures such as Carlo Luraga and Giovanni Santini’s masterpieces to name a few. Hradec Králové comes under eight historically significant cities, which attached to that poetic title „Česká inspirace“ a slogan „Not only in Prague you can enjoy our culture!“

2

The indispensable significance of the city lies also in the field of spiritual life, science and intelligence. The roots of intelligence date back to high Middle Ages (latin particular school founded in 1362), the tradition of medical studies, church and pedagogic education, and many other significant branches is peculiar to the city as well. Aldis congress centre and New Adalbertinum centre play hosts to international symposiums and exhibitions. In case you are looking for something special, we’ve got it for you The city is graced with many parks and gardens and surrounded by extensive forests and many ponds. Come and see for yourselves! - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS

Museums and Galleries The museum of Hradec Králové (designed by architect Jan Kotěra in 1912), which is considered to be an extraordinary structural monument, treasures the heritage of the past. The Gallery of modern art (designed by architect O. Polívka in 1912) houses a large collection of Czech art of the 19th and 20th century. Worldwide known Drak Theatre, excellent Klicpera´s Theatre Company and Hradec Králové Philharmonic orchestra constitute the linchpins of local culture life. Art and history fans can visit local galleries and museums, such as the famous Museum of Eastern Bohemia (Muzeum východních Čech) at the river Labe embankment. Besides a permanent exhibition of the city architecture history there are some seasonal exhibitions. Don’t miss two unique models of the city which are displayed there – one depicting the fort at the half 19th century and the other one the period of architectural development at the beginning of the 20th century. Gallery of Modern Arts (Galerie moderního umění) has its seat at the central Large Square. 3

www.muzeumhk.cz www.galeriehk.cz Concerts and Music Not only Czech, but also famous foreign musicians and artists perform at the Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra (Filharmonie HK). Hradec Cultural and Educational Society (Hradecká kulturní a vzdělávací společnost) runs a number of cultural institutions in the city, for example City Music Hall (Městská hudební síň) or various music and dance festivals. The city is also regarded to as the capital of community singing (Boni Pueri, Jitro). www.adalbertinum.cz

- HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS)

Journey starts at Prague Airport. This airport has two terminal buildings. From both buildings, it is possible to take a special bus called Airport Express, providing direct interconnection of air, rail and urban mass transit. This bus takes people the fastest way through Prague city centre to the Main Railway station (Praha Hlavní nádraží). This bus stop has sign AE and departs every 30 minutes. The cost is 50,- CZK, luggage is free of charge. It takes around 50 minutes to get to the Main Railway station by Airport Express bus. At the Main Station, it is necessary to find a place called “ČD centrum” and buy train ticket to Hradec Králové. The cost for ticket is 149,- CZK. The journey from Prague railway station to Hradec Králové takes about 1h 45min. www.idos.cz

- TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE)

Public Transport The best way to use public transport in Hradec Králové is a City Card that you apply for

4

after your arrival. You can charge your City Card with a season ticket. It enables you to use Public Transport services unlimitedly during a certain time period. Your Card can serve also as an electronic wallet when you charge it with some money. Then you buy electronic tickets for individual rides with a Card, which is a bit cheaper than paper tickets. Most bus services work until midnight. At night only buses no. 51-54 operate and they go round the city only a few times a night. The night fare is 20CZK per ride. If you want to check departure times of public transport, use the following link. http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/hradeckralove/spojeni/ Bike A very convenient way of travelling in Hradec Králové is riding a bike. As there are really few hills in the city and quite good infrastructure for cyclists, you don’t have to be afraid to cycle. It is, however, more convenient during spring and summer. It is advised to get some second-hand bike and a good wheel lock. Walking In case you want to do something for your health, you can always walk around the city. Thanks to its circle planning and small size, it is easy to get almost anywhere on foot. Taxi In case of emergency or with more people it can be fast and comfortable. However, you should count with higher price (around 150CZK to get from dormitory to city centre). Some taxi numbers are 14014 (or 777337711 for Vodafone users) for “Sprint Taxi” or 777775577 for “České Taxi”. http://buddyhk.cz/index.php?page=foreigners/foreigners_transportation

EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES

- SITE VISITS

Hrádek u Nechanic Castle This castle was built in the Tudor Gothic style as a prestige summer residence of the House of Harrach during 1839–1857 by František Arnošt, Count of Harrach. The design by a London architect, Edward Buckton Lamb (1805–1869), was used as a template for the castle construction. The management of the building work was entrusted to Karl Fischer (1817–1856), a young and talented Austrian architect, who adapted the plans and prepared the designs for the decoration and furnishing of the castle interior. In addition, a

8

large number of antique articles were brought in, particularly from Italy and Austria. In many cases these were the whole portals, ceilings or a complete set of contents for an entire room. Concurrently with the castle construction, a part of the surrounding wood was landscaped as an English-style park, and a game preserve and peasantry were founded in the other part. The castle has been open to the public since 1953 and since 2002 it has been listed as national cultural heritage. http://www.hradek-nechanice.cz/vylety-do-okoli.php Třebechovice pod Orebem The town of Třebechovice pod Orebem, a place much sought after by tourists, is located on the confluence of the Rivers Orlice and Dědina, 13 km east of Hradec Králové. There are a number of places of historical interest to be seen: Třebechovice Museum of Nativity Scenes, a historical centre with the Plague Column dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Holy Trinity statue and sandstone fountain with a water jet (from 1675), which was donated to the town by the Prague community in 1879 (originally it used to stand on Wenceslas Square in Prague), St. Andrew’s Church (from 1767), Neo-Romanesque evangelical church (built in 1880) and Krňovice Open-air Museum. Podorlicko Open-air Museum in Krňovice The Podorlicko Open-air Museum in Krňovice is the only museum of this type in the Královéhradecký Region. It gathers together architectural structures and technical monuments of the Královéhradecký Region, the foothills of the Orlické Mountains and the Krkonoše foothills. The area of its interest does not overlap with any of today’s existing open-air museums in the Czech Republic, but instead enlarges their network. The expositions consisting of period fixtures and fittings of the 18– 20 centuries are set up in a way allowing the functioning of these facilities to be demonstrated as much as possible. The Town of Chlumec nad Cidlinou Chlumec nad Cidlinou is an ancient town of five and a half thousand people situated in East

9

Bohemia, on the confluence of the Rivers Cidlina and Bystrice. The oldest preserved records about this town date back to the 12 century. Lying at an average of 206 metres above sea level, the landscape around the town is slightly undulating with numerous ponds, as well as coniferous and deciduous forests. The nearest neighbourhood is encased with gardens and for this reason Chlumec nad Cidlinou is often referred to as the “Town among Gardens”. The original settlement was founded under the wooded hillock , where a wooden fort used to stand as a guard point protecting the Prague – Klodzko trade route. Later a moated castle was erected there, but almost all of it and the town itself were damaged during the Thirty Years' War. Having experienced several fires afterwards, the actual castle was not restored and instead a new aristocratic residence, Karlova Koruna (Charles Crown Castle), was built above the town. In 1611 the Chlumec estate was given by the Holy Roman Emperor Matthias to the noble family of Vchynský – later Kinský, who are currently once again the owners of the castle and the surrounding estate. Charles Crown Castle, Castle Kost http://kinskycastles.com/castle-karlova-koruna.htm http://kinskycastles.com/castle-kost.htm Krkonose National Park The Krkonose (Giant Mountains) are the highest mountains in Bohemia. Krkonose National Park (Krkonossky Narodni Park) was established in 1962 to protect the numerous bird species and extensive flora that includes rare trees. The area is now listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reservation. Inside the park visitors will find the small spa town, Janske Lazne, and the ski resorts of Psindleruv Mlyn and Pec pod Snezkou. In addition to skiing the park is also a popular area for hiking, with huts on the trails, and bird watching. Birds are drawn to the park for the peat bogs. The most popular hike in the mountains is the Harrach path, which is only open during the summer months. http://www.podkrkonosi.eu

10

Litomysl Castle The Litomysl Castle, or the Chateau as it is sometimes called, was built by the Aostali brothers in the late 16th Century. Following the major fires that devastated the town in the 18th Century the castle underwent some major alterations. Composer Bedrich Smetana was born here in 1824. The castle's theatre was constructed at this time and remains much the same as it was when it was built, with scenery done by Josef Platzer. Noteworthy features of the Castle are the extraordinary sgraffito, the 1728 sundial, and windows, which look directly from the exterior into the courtyard. The interior displays furniture and porcelain collections. http://www.planetware.com/tourist-attractions-/hradec-kralove-cz-kr-hk.htm Castle Kuks Kuks is a former baroque spa resort in Eastern Bohemia, built on the banks of the Labe River. The natural mineral spring was discovered by Count Franz Anton von Sporck on his own property which he had inherited, along with a huge fortune, when he was seventeen years old. Sporck spent the next two decades building Kuks which turned out to be more than just a spa. This fabulous resort contained all of the usual spa amenities including baths, hospital, chateau and accommodations, as well as a theatre, racetrack and other entertainment venues. He held river pageants, hunts and had his own private orchestra. Kuks became one of the premier spa resorts in central Europe, even frequented by Johann Sebastian Bach. Pardubice Pardubice, south of Hradec Kralove in Eastern Bohemia, is famous for its annual "Great Pardubice Steeplechase", a tradition which first began in 1874. The course is known for being extremely challenging, especially one jump called "taxis' jump". The race is held on the second Sunday in October in Pardubice and brings visitors from all over the region. Another annual event in the town is the Junior Tennis Tournament, and event that has been ongoing for the past century. Apart from these events, Pardubice also has some interesting sights. Most of the architecture dates to after a 1507 fire that destroyed much of the town. Buildings of note are the Gothic

11

Church of St Bartholomew (Kostel sv Bartolomeje) and the 20th Century art nouveau theatre. Located on the main square (Pernstejnske namesti) is the 16th Century Green Gate, numerous Renaissance houses, and the nearby Renaissance, sgraffitoed castle (zamek). The castle houses a small regional museum and a collection of art by Czech artists. Those of you who like to cycle will not be disappointed either. The paths alongside Labe and Orlice rivers invite you for both short and long trips to the neighbouring places of interest mentioned before. You can visit the real historical jewels such as the castle in Hrádek u Nechanic and Karlova Koruna. You can pay a visit to Kuks castle where you will find many Braun’s statues. You can also visit the Chlum battleground and Probošt´s Bethlehem in nearby Třebechovice. Hiking lovers can visit the lime rocks in Český Ráj or Adršpach. And finally, it would be a pity not to visit the Krkonoše and Orlické mountains or a safari in Dvůr Králové nad Labem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pardubice_District http://www.hradecko.eu/kalendar-akci.html http://www.planetware.com/tourist-attractions-/hradec-kralove-cz-kr-hk.htm http://www.hradecko.eu/ http://www.planetware.com/map/hradec-kralove-map-cz-cz91.htm http://www.orlickehory-cz.info/
