Throughit,theyhavegainedvaluableperspectiveontheirworld,pastandpresent.CloseŊtextualinteractionwith literatureshouldhaveheightenedappreciationforthosetexts,improvedcriticalandanalyticalskillsinreadingand writing,enhancedspeakingandlisteningabilities,andenrichedstudents'academicandpersonalvocabulary.This courseisorganizedchronologically,sostudentscanseetheinfluencesonandevolutionoftheideasandforms. Writing,research,andspeakingassignmentswillcontinuetofocusonformulatingandexpressingideasandarguments aboutthereadings.Particularemphasisisplacedongainingcriticalperspectiveontherelationshipbetweencontent andformandonsynthesizingideasintoclearandconciseproseandpresentations.  Tobecomecriticalconsumersoftext,studentswillbeexposedtoincreasinglymorecomplextextstowhichtheyapply thoseskills.InEnglishlanguagearts,thatcriticalcontentisbothrigorousandrelevantandincludeshighŊquality contemporaryworksaswellastheclassicsofliterature.InEnglishlanguagearts,thatcontentincludesclassicmyths andstoriesfromaroundtheworld,America’sfoundingdocuments,foundationalAmericanliterature,andShakespeare. Unit1:FramingWesternLiterature:Studentswillexploreselectedworksofmedievalliteratureand philosophyanddrawconnectionsbetweenthetwo.Studentswillcloselyexaminethenarrativestructureof theliteraryworksandhowthatstructureaffectsthecontent.Theywillexploreliteraryelementssuchas allegoryandsatire,notingthewayinwhichtheseelementsreflectsocialandphilosophicalviews. Unit2:Humanism:StudentswillexploreselectedphilosophicalandliteraryworksoftheRenaissance,looking closelyatthevaluetheyplaceonhumanbeings.Withintheselectedworks,studentswillexplorethe humanistphilosophyofsecularism,theappreciationofworldlypleasures,andtheemphasisonindividual expression.TheywillcomparetheworksofthisperiodwiththoseoftheMiddleAges,lookingattheir differencesandsimilarities.Thewritingfocuswillbeonargumentation.Theunitwillculminatewitha multimediaresearchproject. Unit3:TheQuestforKnowledge:Inthisunit,studentswilllookatthephilosophicalandliterarywritingsof thelateseventeenthandtheeighteenthcentury,focusingtheiremphasisonreform,reason,andscience. Studentswillexplorethemesofman'sdividednature,sinandredemption,economicinequality,vanityand hypocrisy.Specialattentionwillbepaidtotheliteraryformknownassatireandwhatitrevealsaboutthe author'spurpose.Alsoincludedinthisunitisaseminalworkofsciencefiction. Unit5:HeadandHeart:Thefocusofthisunitwillbeontheconflictbetweenreasonandemotionthatis prevalentintheliteratureandphilosophyoftheearlynineteenthcenturyandtheemphasisonemotionin earlyromanticworks.StudentsbegintheunitbyreadingAusten'sSenseandSensibility,thenovelthat capturesthisconflictinitstitleanditscharacters.StudentswillreadexcerptsfromRousseau'sphilosophyon thenatureofmanwhichprovidesthephilosophicalbasisfortheromanticworksthatfollow.Thewriting focusforthisunitwillbeondeeprevision.Studentswillexaminerevisionsdonebypoetsreadinthisunit. Theywillthencreateandrevisetheirownnarrativepiece Unit6:TheIndividualandSociety:Thisunitwillfocusonworksandauthorsconcernedwiththeplaceofthe individualinsocietyduringthenineteenthcentury.Aswithotherunits,studentswillreadsomeofthe importantphilosophicalworksoftheperiodandexaminehowthosephilosophiesinformedtheworksthat follow.Studentswillwritealiteraryanalysiswhichcompares/contrastsanideaintwooftheworksfromthe unit. Unit7:TheSearchforMeaning:Thisunitwillfocusonliteraturefromthefirsthalfofthetwentiethcentury andthephilosophiesthatinformedit.Studentswillexplorehowliteraryartistsgrappledwithquestionsabout thenatureofexistence,themeaningoflife,thehumanpsyche,andalienation.Theunitwillculminatewitha multimediaresearchprojectwhichpresentsandevaluatesdifferentcriticalperspectivesofaworkofthe student'schoice.
