Colchester Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town and first capital

Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town and first capital with much to offer the foreign visitor. Although located in the heart of the pretty Essex countryside and just a short distance from a beautiful unspoiled coastline, Colchester is only fifty minutes by train from the heart of London. The historical towns of Cambridge and Norwich are within easy reach. For the last 2000 years, Colchester has played a major role in some of the most important events in English history. Whilst London was still a small trading post, the Romans decided to establish their capital in Colchester. One thousand years later, the French built a fine castle on the a site of the old Roman temple. Today the castle houses a museum which tells much of the history of the town and is the most important tourist attraction in the region.

The Centre is ten minutes’ walk from the middle of the town where students can enjoy a lively shopping centre or wander through narrow lanes to visit the smaller boutiques and cafés. Those interested in the arts can visit the Mercury Theatre, the Odeon multi-screen cinema and other superb arts and music venues. In addition, the town has a large number of modern sports centres which, together with a vibrant night life, provide the very best in leisure and entertainment.

“For the last 2000 years, Colchester has played a major role in some of the most important events in English history”

Students and Teachers The Centre is open to students aged 16 years and older, offering a good mix of ages and nationalities throughout the year. Students come from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds but all have the same aim of studying hard and improving their English. They are provided with a great deal of help by the Centre’s experienced staff and great care is taken in providing information about all aspects of their course. Teaching takes place in a relaxed and professional atmosphere in small multi-national groups, with classes being taught by experienced and qualified teachers, many of whom have worked at the Centre for a long time.

Indeed, it may also be accepted as a qualification to allow professionals to work in the health sectors in different countries where English is used. It is not an examination that students pass or fail, but provides the candidate with a level in English from 1 to 9. For example to study at postgraduate level in the UK, students need normally to achieve a level of 6.5, depending on their chosen course of study.

Professional English courses – ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONALS Perhaps you are a busy professional person who needs to improve the English you need for your work. As well as developing your knowledge of general English, you probably need to study the specialised language you need for your job. For example, doctors may need to talk to patients and other doctors, bankers need to be familiar with the language of accountancy and finance, whilst lawyers must understand how English is used to draw up specialised contracts. If you are in business, you may need to take part in meetings, mix socially and write reports and emails. To provide the right mixture of general and specialised English, Colchester English Study Centre recommends that you follow a Professional English Combination Course when 20 x 50 minute lessons of general English each week at the correct level in international groups are combined with 5 or 10 x 50 minute private lessons each week that focus on specialised English. The combination of an international group programme with very focused one-to-one classes is an efficient, enjoyable and cost-effective way of ensuring rapid improvement in your professional English skills. Of course a fully tailor-made one-to-one option may be appropriate if you have a specific target and limited time. Students can start these courses on any Monday. A detailed questionnaire will ensure that the programme is fully tailor-made to meet the professional’s individual requirements. Ipswich is a fascinating combination of an ancient port, a busy commercial centre and an attractive and historical town. Its famous Christchurch Park with the annual music festival brings many visitors each summer. In the town centre, there are networks of narrow streets full of wooden framed houses and handsome buildings from Victorian England with lots of interesting shops and fine museums. Modern Ipswich offers a wide range of exciting entertainment options in cinema, theatre and music. Ipswich Summer Centre is located very close to the town centre which makes it easy for students to carry out a wide range of visits and activities on foot. London is only 2 hours away with Cambridge less than an hour’s journey by bus. By living with our friendly and welcoming host families, students will learn more about British life as well as improving their speaking and listening skills. Ipswich’s population of 150,000 means that it is just the right size for the foreign student ~ not too big and not too small. More information on Ipswich can be found at http://www. ipswich.gov.uk/ tourism/guide/ default.htm
