Educational Component is Major Factor in ACE Tennis Players Overall Success Over the years the accomplishment which ACE Tennis is most proud of is the number of athletes they have assisted in receiving top American University Scholarships. Over 200 ACE Tennis athletes have received scholarships to U.C.L.A., Michigan, Harvard, Pepperdine, Notre Dame, Florida, Duke, Alabama, Indiana and now this year Soufiane Arzagui, the most recent ACE Tennis graduate has accepted a scholarship at the prestigious Ivy League School, Brown University. Our highly successful educational model for student-athletes at ACE Tennis in Burlington, has been overseen by the ACE Tennis Educational Advisor, Gary Ewart. Gary is a retired secondary school Principal, athlete and coach, with 35 years of experience assisting young athletes in the pursuit of excellence in their sport and in school. The ACE Tennis model allows students to attend local elementary and secondary schools on modified schedules that accommodate training hours and provide young student-athletes with the opportunity to learn and interact in a normal school learning environment. This model has proven to be ideal for the intellectual and social development of ACE athletes. Gary's extensive background has provided ACE student-athletes and parents with a unique level of knowledge and insight for educational planning decisions over the past 12 years. The highly successful Burlington model will be offered in Toronto as of September 2010. Gary's professional relationships in the GTA, with elementary and secondary Principals, will provide Toronto Tennis City student-athletes with the benefits of school and the classroom environment in public schools near the club. At the grade 7 and 8 level, Hodgson Senior Public School (schools.tdsb.on.ca/hodgson) is walking distance away and will be an ideal setting for our athletes. At the secondary level our school of choice is Vaughan Road Academy (schools.tdsb.on.ca/vaughanroad) as it has excellent academic programs with an INTERAC component geared to students that require flexible, modified timetables. To complement part-time school, Gary will advise and facilitate student enrolment in "out of school" independent learning and virtual/e-learning courses offered by the Ministry of Education/TVO and leading edge on-line providers, including e-Learning Ontario, Avon Maitland, Trillium Lakelands and the Toronto Board of Education. ACE Tennis also provides students and parents with current information regarding NCAA

eligibility requirements, Amateurism Issues, The College Board and SAT/ACT tests and their respective roles in securing university scholarships in the United States. To this end, Gary administers a "practice SAT" each year that is sponsored and assessed by The Princeton Review. He also works in an advisory role with student-athletes as they prepare for the SAT/ACT. Gary can be reached at [email protected].

Educational Program for Burlington, 2010 Goal: To provide an educational program that meets all the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education (OME); is customized to the academic strengths and personal goals of each student and is flexible enough to accommodate the training and competitive demands of high performance athletes. Programs: Parents will have the opportunity to meet with the Principal to review the student's academic records, discuss the learning models below and select the one that best matches the learning style, academic strengths, commitment and self-discipline of their son or daughter and best fits their training and competitive schedule. Assisted Self-Directed Learning: This model will require considerable motivation, selfdiscipline and time management skills on the part of students and parents. All residents of Ontario selecting this model, for students under 18 yrs, must apply for Home Schooling for their son/daughter at their local school. ACE Tennis Academy staff will assist with this process. At the secondary level, students will acquire the skills and knowledge, prescribed for each course by the OME, through print materials, from the Ontario Independent Learning Centre (ILC) and/or through virtual/on-line delivery by established e-learning sites such as Avon Maitland, Trillium Lakelands and Halton Boards of Education. Subject teacher/tutors at ACE will be available on-site in the ACE Learning Resource Centre from 10am to Noon Monday, Wednesday & Friday to assist "self-directed learners" with print and/or e-learning issues. At the elementary level, the skills and knowledge for each grade will be delivered through OME Subject and Grade Documents using Halton Board instructional resources that will be available in the ACE Learning Resource Centre for students, parents and ACE teacher/tutors. Part-time school: This "hybrid" education plan combines the benefits of "part-time" school, with daily instruction by teachers in a classroom setting, with the flexibility of "self-directed learning" for selected courses as described above. Parents and student-athletes, with the assistance of the Principal, will select those subjects and courses that might best be "learnt" by the student in a structured classroom setting and those that would be appropriate for "self-directed" print and/or e-learning strategies. Secondary school students will be enrolled in a minimum of 2 courses per semester at Nelson, Robert Bateman or Central High Schools, as determined by core course selections and availability of courses in time slots that will accommodate training. The remaining credits will be earned "out of school" through print or e-learning courses at home and in the ACE Learning Resource Centre. Elementary school students will be enrolled in an "arrive late/leave early" schedule at Central, Tecumseh, Frontenac, Pineland public schools or St. Raphael and Assumption Catholic

schools, as determined by place of residence, program needs and parental preference. Academic Services Provided: •

Other School-Related Information Out of school credits Virtual/e-learning web sites ACE students have used on-line courses from Avon Maitland (www.amdec.ca) and Trillium Lakelands (www.virtuallearning.ca) extensively over the past 10 years. Avon Maitland courses are full-year, continuous entry until February, with final exams in June. Trillium Lakelands courses are semestered. Registration for the 1st semester is early September with final exams in January. Semester 2 registration is in early February with final exams in June. The Halton Board of Education offers 7 on-line courses at http://elearning.hdsb.ca/. Civic/Careers and several new gr. 11 and 12 courses are offered on this site. Course selection and registration for all e-learning courses should be done in consultation with Gary Ewart, Principal. Home schooled and part-time students will need "school" signatures to register. Independent Learning Centre (ILC) - Ministry of Education For "part-time" students, registration for these courses will require the completion of Form D and the signature of your school VP or Head of Student Services. Self-directed/Home Schooled students will require completion of Form C1 to register. These forms are available at the ACE

Learning Centre. ILC courses offerings are listed at www.ilc.org. Unfortunately, since ILC is primarily an adult learning service, they have decided not to offer any Grade 9 academic courses! All Ontario gr. 10 to 12 academic courses are available through ILC.

SAT Test The SAT is a 4-hour academic ability test that most Division I and II U.S. universities require for admission. The SAT is normally taken in your graduating year but pre-tests and considerable preparation are recommended. Information concerning SAT test dates, registration procedures and test preparation is available on the website www.collegeboard.com and will be posted in the ACE Learning Centre. Students in grade 11 should start doing the "Question of the Day" on this web-site. Retired teacher, Mrs Helen Donohoe conducts SAT prep workshops at Cedar Springs. A practice SAT is conducted by ACE, the Halton Board and the Princeton Review in late February each year. Grade 11's should prepare and register to take this test.

C. NCAA The NCAA is an association of U.S. colleges & universities that is divided into Division I, II and III. All student athletes for Division I and II schools must be registered with and cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center. Student athletes interested in obtaining a scholarship to a U.S. university should become very familiar with eligibility rules, amateurism issues and the "core course" requirements of the NCAA. Go to www.ncaa.org and click on the the Eligibility Center.

2010-2011 ACE Tennis Fall Programs in Burlington and Toronto The 2010-2011 ACE Tennis Fall Programs have been officially announced earlier this week. Please look at the ACE Tennis Player Development Path which provides an overview of player progression through the ACE Tennis system. The on-court tennis training program is complemented with a specific physical development program and an on- and off-court mental training program. We also assist players in the academic field, through on-going communication with the player's school and through preparing them for university entrance tests. Support is also

available in the medical field. We have made arrangements with area schools so players can have flexible schedules which allow for them to have early morning practices as well as to attend the 2pm practice sessions. Burlington players will also be able to access clay court training during certain times in the year at Toronto Tennis City, while Toronto players will be able to access hard court training on the weekends at ACE Tennis Burlington site. The same professional development approach is used for all Progressive Tennis programs. We look forward to a great year.
