We would also like to add some Internet Safety Tips for Kids and Teens this month!! 1. Spend time having fun with your parents online and helping them understand technology. 2. Never post your personal information, such as a cell phone number, home number, home address, or your location on any social networking site or through mobile apps like Snapchat or Instagram. 3. Never meet in person with anyone you first “met” on the Internet. If someone asks to meet you, tell your parents or guardian right away. Some people may not be who they say the y are! 4. Check with your parents before you post pictures of yourself or others online. Do not post inappropriate pictures of anyone. These NEVER go away. 5. Never respond to mean or rude text, messages, or emails. Delete any unwanted messages. You may need to delete friends who continuously bother you or post things that are not appropriate. 6. Never share your password with anyone, including your best friend. The only people who should know your password are your parents or guardian. 7. If you wouldn’t say something to another person’s face, don’t text it or post it online. 8. Do not download or install software or anything on your computer or cell phone before checking with your parents or guardian. 9. Use the privacy settings of social networking sites. 10. If anything makes you feel uncomfortable online, while gaming or when using your cell phone, talk with your parents or guardian right away. Source: Netwsmartz.org and safekids.com

Influenza: Get the flu vaccine every year.

The Single best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine, which protects against different strains of seasonal influenza.

Everyone 6 months and older– including preteens and teens– should get a flu vaccine every year, both to protect themselves and to help keep illness from spreading.

Children under the age of 9 may require more than one dose. Talk to your child’s health care professional to find out if they need more than one dose.

Flu vaccine protects against flu and the other health problems flu can cause, like dehydration (loss of body fluids), making asthma or diabetes worse, or even pneumonia.

Children should get the flu vaccine every year as soon as it’s available, usually in the fall. It is very I mportant for children with chronic health conditions like asthma or diabetes to get the flu shot, but the flu can be serious for even healthy children.

Flu seasons arte unpredictable and can be severe. Annual flu vaccination should begin by September or as soon as vaccine is available, and continue throughout the flu season, which can last as late as May. Flu season can begin as early as October. Seasonal flu activity usually peaks in January, February or later.

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop for protection against influenza virus infection,. Flu vaccines will not protect against flu-like illnesses caused by non-influenza viruses.

Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure asthma or diabetes.

A 2013 study by CSC flu experts estimated that cumulatively over six flu seasons, from 2005 to 2011, flu vaccination averted approximately 13.6 million illnesses, 5.8 million medical visits and approximately 112,900 flu-related hospitalizations in the United States. Sleep for Success School-age kids need 10 to 12 hours of sleep at night. Homework, sports, after-school activities, TVs, computers, video games, and hectic family schedules might interfere with kids getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and may make it difficult for kids to pay attention in school. It is important to have a consistent bedtime, especially on school nights. Tips for a good night’s sleep: Include a winding-down period in the bedtime routine Stick to a bedtime and alert your child 30 minutes and 10 minutes beforehand Keep TVs and computers out of the bedroom Keep child’s bedroom dark, cool, and quiet Avoid caffeine

The East Middle 7th graders are participating in a community service/fundraising effort called Shoebox Recycling. It is a program in which student’s donate used pairs of shoes and are paid $.50 per pound on return. It is a win-win program for everyone! The shoes are redistributed to people all over the world who need shoes for various reasons. If they are not reused, they are recycled. Shoebox Recycling focuses on not filling up the landfills with shoes, while helping others at the same time. Shoes that can be donated must be paired and wearable with no holes in the soles or tears in the covering. They accept all kinds of shoes, but no flip-flops, skates or blades, slippers or winter boots. Almost everything else is acceptable, so clean out your closets East Middle and donate to a great cause! All shoes can be dropped off in the 7th grade pod area.
