EAGLE VALE HIGH SCHOOL EAGLE SPEAKS

12th October 2015 Term 4, Week 2 Dear Parents and Caregivers From the Principal Mr P. Lawrence It is with great pride that I write this first report as Principal of Eagle Vale High School. I am very honoured to have been selected as the Principal and I am heartened by the strong welcome I have been afforded by students, staff and parents already within my first week in the role. I have a strong work history of commitment to the South Western Sydney Region, having served for 25 years in Public Schools in the Fairfield, Campbelltown and Liverpool networks. Most recently, I served as Deputy Principal for over six years at Hoxton Park High School.

Drysdale Street, EAGLE VALE NSW 2558 T: (02) 4626 5088, F: (02) 4628 0408 E: [email protected] I look forward to being a part of the Eagle Vale High School community and meeting and working with all students and families throughout Term 4 and into 2016. I am proud to say that Eagle Vale High School is a school with committed, expert staff and outstanding resources and facilities. Together we will work to achieve the great things of which our students are capable. Warm Regards, Paul Lawrence Principal

I am proudly committed to Public Education, with my whole work history spent in public schools and indeed, my own three children all attend public schools. This commitment to Public Education extends to the Eagle Vale High School community and I am determined to support students and their families in ensuring that all students achieve their own personal best and find success in our school and transition to successful further education, training and the work force. I strongly believe that all students are capable of great things and that our school will provide them with the opportunities to develop their skills and abilities and support them to follow their own strengths and passions. Alongside this belief is the understanding that students must also work hard to achieve their successes. I expect that our students will do their best work always, attend school at all times and support their fellow students, staff and their school. Our students are expected to be prepared for school and each lesson and wear their school uniform appropriately each day. I remind all students and families that uniforms are available for purchase from the school and the wearing of our uniform is an important component in students belonging at school and the development of pride in their school.

Buon Appetito Italian Language Excursion On the 31st August of Term 3, students of Italian from years 8, 9 and 10 were fortunate enough to go on their first Buon Appetito language excursion to Leichhardt. Everyone was very excited about the excursion and had loads of fun on the train ride to Central Station, everyone was chatting with excitement and the chatter and buzz became louder as we neared our destination. When we arrived in Leichhardt the students met the assigned tour guides at the Italian Forum where they spoke to them about the many aspects of early Italian settlement in Leichhardt. In this session, students also completed an interesting booklet on Italian food and its regional origins, and students also got to practice their Italian by answering some of the questions in Italian. It was a fantastic day all round but the stand out was eating a delicious Italian lunch which comprised of various Italian pizzas, pasta, Italian garlic bread, and of course, gelato to finish off, mmm buonissimo! One of the pizzas which was a favourite was the potato and garlic pizza which most students ate with gusto! Before lunch there was a demonstration pasta making session in which some of the students had a go at making spaghetti with the electric pasta maker, other students got to make spinach ravioli. During the day students also visited the Italian Grocer in Norton Plaza where they became familiar with Italian products. Following this, students strolled down Norton Street learning about the historical buildings along the way, and they finally made their way to the famous Mezzapica Cake Shop where some students bought yummy Italian cannoli. The day ended very well as students made their way back to Central Station and then back home to Campbelltown. Mrs Mason

Battle of the Arts Battle of the Arts was an inaugural event run at Sarah Redfern High School in EDUCATION Week. The Battle of the Arts saw 19 south-west Sydney primary school groups send artistic representatives to the school to take part in the creative challenge with round-robin activities. The day’s theme was ‘‘spooky’’ and teachers and staff played the part by dressing in costume to inspire pupils’ creativity. The activities included spooky ceramics, still-life freaky found objects, monster scratch foam printing and Alice in mono printing. Each session was run by students from Sarah Redfern, Elizabeth Macarthur and Eagle Vale high schools. Eagle Vale High School students ran Still-life freaky found objects which was influenced by Mexican Sugar Skulls and the contrast of life and death. Jersey Day: Friday 4th September On September 4 2015 the Eagle Vale High School S.R.C organised a Jersey Day. Students and staff wore their favourite sporting jersey to school to show their support for the DonateLife Network and begin the conversation with their family and friends about their donation decision. Jersey day is a simple concept, designed to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation. Jersey Day has been inspired by the story of Nathan Gremmo who was tragically lost in an accident in May 2015. As a school we raised $222.45 which was donated to the New South Wales Organ and Tissue Donation Service. On behalf of the S.R.C we would like to thank all staff and students who participated and donated on the day. Report by SRC.

PDHPE Tackling the Big Issues : Mental Health with State of Mind Ambassador Dan Hunt During week 7 year 9 and 10 PDHPE students had the privilege of listening to, and interacting with a guest speaker on the important issue of Mental Health. Dan Hunt is a former 1st Grade Rugby League player for The St George Illawarra Dragons. He was medically retired after career ending knee injuries cut short his playing career during 2015. His illustrious career spanning more than 150 1st Grade games. During his playing career Dan was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder in 2011. As part of the St George Illawarra Dragons personal development program Dan embarked upon study in the area of Mental Health and has achieved qualifications in the areas of Community Services, Mental Health, Youth Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Anxiety and Depression. He is currently the NRL state of Mind Ambassador and is initiating a program in schools to address the issues of mental health and encouraging youths to engage in educational pursuits. Dan shared his own personal story and also provided students with knowledge about being an elite NRL player. He shared the statistics that less than 5% of young players aspiring to “make it” in the NRL actually get to play in a 1st Grade game. He utilised the vehicle of his personal experience as an NRL player to share the highs and lows of his career and speak about how this affected him mentally. He spoke about the importance of goal setting and striving to achieve your best. He touched on the importance of being Resilient and being able to bounce back when faced with adversity. One of the strongest messages that was conveyed during the presentation was “no matter what your passion, or goal get educated about it”. The students appreciate being a part of the presentation and felt informed and inspired but Dan Hunts word and action. In their words …. “even famous players are affected by Mental Health”…….. “he said 1 on 5 people have a mental health issue …that’s heaps”. The PDHPE faculty appreciated the openness and generosity of Dan Hunt and hope that the students of EVHS can benefit from his ongoing support of local youth.
