EAGLE’S NEST FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

2014

Dear Eagle’s Nesters, It is with deep gratitude to you, our supporters and volunteers that we embark on 2015 with clear direction and solid footing. 2014 was a year of planning strategizing, and building a path to our vision of Eagle’s Nest as she reaches 100 years old in 2027. At the March planning retreat we used your input to shape our discussions with the Board of Trustees and Staff, and are now actively engaged in action steps to meet those priorities. 2014 was also a year with healthy enrollment across all programs. A total of 567 campers, 46 OA students and 30 Hante Adventurers learned what it means to live in community, be good stewards to nature, pique their intellect in new ways, and create joyful moments every day. Your support of the Annual Fund made it possible for 121 of these young people to be granted financial aid totaling $215,655. This aid made possible many dreams. Your support also helped us to better our infrastructure. We replaced the roof on the New Lodge (yes it is still metal), built a new composting system up by the barn, and tackled many other smaller building needs. Several of you put your eyes to the future; filling our ranks of esteemed planned givers and helping us grow our endowed funds. I encourage you to read more inside this report about our ongoing strategic initiatives. Your contributions of ideas, time, and financial support are integral in moving Eagle’s Nest forward and making these experiences available for all. With admiration and gratitude to each of you who do so much for our Nest,

Noni Waite-Kucera Executive Director

“I know in my heart that her roots are strong because of how she was shaped while at The Outdoor Academy and I believe that she’s been given the gift of endurance and self-reliance. She has grown and matured, she is more grounded and can see more clearly, she is wiser and more in tune with herself. - OA Parent, Fall Semester 2014

From the Camp Director

From the OA Director In glancing at our Annual Report from last year, I’m reminded that 2013 was our best year for both enrollment and tuition since 2009 and I’m pleased to say that the trend continues. As we open our doors to Semester 40, we are remembering a stellar 2014 at The Outdoor Academy.

As the winter days grow a little colder, I find warmth by dreaming of the summer. Before long bright yellow daffodils will push their way towards the sun, and hundreds of excited campers will begin packing up their trunks to head to their second home on Hart Road.

Just seeing the words Semester 40 on the page takes me aback. We are now one of the elders among the semester school community. After twenty years and hundreds and hundreds of tenth-graders, I can clearly see that Helen Waite was right on target. Our mission in 1995 has stood the test of time. Eagle’s Nest started this school for all the right reasons and has remained true to its humble but passionate beginnings.

My excitement for the coming summer is buoyed by the wonderful experiences we had at camp and on Hante in 2014. Last summer we were able to award a total of $116,984 in financial aid to over 100 campers. Thanks to the support of our donors these campers were able to explore the creeks, woods and mountains and connect to the natural world. They were also able to make new friends with campers from around the world, to step out of their comfort zones, and to grow in confidence, independence, leadership, and responsibility. We are very proud that our strong scholarship program allows young people of varying income levels to experience Eagle’s Nest, and to bring their unique talents and perspectives to our community.

That simple and honest mission statement has served us so very well. We continue to sharpen and clarify our day-to-day goals here with our cornerstones and principles and the more we do that the more I circle back to the early lessons I learned from Helen on belonging. It is so very satisfying to know our work here is not a trendy experiment in education, but the rather simple truth of holding this space for our students and living well every day in this learning community. The faculty of The Outdoor Academy sends out our gratitude for your support of our school.

We recently awarded camperships for the coming summer. We had many requests from new and returning campers who are eager to spend a joyful session in the mountains at camp. It was heartwarming to read all of the requests and to know that we are able to grant generous awards thanks to your love and financial commitment to Eagle’s Nest. Before long we’ll be sweeping out the cabins, hanging welcome signs, and getting ready to greet our first campers of 2015. Thanks to your support, I know we’ll have another great summer.

With joy and thanks,
