Dripping  Springs  Middle  School Student  Council  Officer  Candidate  Declaration  Packet  2013-­2014 Requirements  for  Student  Council  Officer  Positions: •  Students  must  have  and  maintain  satisfactory  grades  (80  or  above)  average  in  ALL  classes. •  Students  must  have  satisfactory  citizenship  (no  referrals)  and  be  an  active  participant  in  all  Student  Council initiatives  and  activities. •  This  packet  completed  and  submitted  to  Ms.  Vollentine  by  Monday,  September  30th,  by  4:30  p.m.

You  must  be  able  to  commit  to  all  of  the  above  criteria  to  be  considered  for  election.

Candidate  Declaration  Packet  Checklist:   Candidate  Information  Page   Candidate  Questionnaire   Teacher  Recommendation  forms  (2)   Rules/Guidelines  signed  by  candidate  and  Parent/Guardian Campaign  Timeline: •  Candidate  Declaration  packets  submitted  to  Ms.  Vollentine  by  Monday,  September  30th,  by  4:30  p.m. •  Students  will  be  notified  of  campaign  eligibility  by  Wednesday,  October  2nd. •  MANDATORY  Campaigning  Meeting  is  Thursday,  10/3  from  8:30-­8:55  OR  4:15-­4:40 •  Campaign  Week  will  run  from  Friday,  10/4,  to  Friday,  10/11,  with  Friday  being  Election  Day.  ALL  posters must  have  prior  approval  by  the  Ms.  Vollentine  and  an  Administrator  before  being  displayed. •  Student  Election  speeches  will  be  videoed  and  played  in  advisory/homeroom  during  the  week  of    10/7-­10/11 •  Student  elections  will  take  place  on  Friday,  10/11,  during  lunches. Results  will  be  announced  on  Monday,  10/15. •  All  election  campaign  materials  MUST  be  removed  by  4:30p  on  Friday,  10/11.

STUDENT  COUNCIL  CAMPAIGNING  GUIDELINES *You  are  not  a  candidate  for  office  until  all  your  credentials  have  been  checked  and  you  are  declared  a candidate.  You  will  receive  a  letter  of  candidacy  no  later  than  Wednesday,  October  2nd. *Failure  to  abide  by  the  following  rules  will  disqualify  you  from  seeking  office. *Students  who  are  elected  to  be  on  Student  Council  must  attend  the  General  Student  Council  meetings.  All candidates  who  win  their  respective  positions  will  receive  a  letter  of  your  campaign  victory  through  their advisory  class  period.

RULES  FOR  CAMPAIGNING

*Anyone  not  abiding  by  these  rules  may  be  disqualified  from  the  election. 1.  Depending  on  the  number  of  applicants,  you  may  display  only  ten  posters  to  promote  your  campaign.  No posters  may  be  larger  than  a  sheet  of  poster  board.  Use  only  painter’s  tape  (blue)  to  mount  on  walls.  You  must get  all  posters  approved  by  Ms.  Vollentine  AND  an  administrator  before  hanging  them. 2.  You  may  only  hang  your  posters  in  the  designated  Student  Council  elections  areas,  (i.e.  hallways  and cafeteria.  No  bathrooms  or  classrooms!) 3.  You  are  responsible  for  removing  your  campaign  posters  when  the  election  is  over.  All  campaign  materials must  be  removed  by  Friday,  10/12. 4.  You  may  NOT  give  any  favors  to  your  fellow  students  during  the  campaign.  Absolutely  no  favors  (money, candy,  gum,  etc.)  are  allowed.  You  may,  however,  give  your  fellow  students  badges  or  buttons.  Candidate t-­shirts  must  be  worn  to  school  and  not  distributed  at  school. 5.  You  must  campaign  in  a  positive,  fair  spirit.  Negative  campaigning  is  prohibited!  Any  personal  references about  your  opponent,  any  derogatory  remarks  about  school  or  any  group,  all  types  of  profanity,  and  any inappropriate  language  or  messages  (e.g.,  references  to  drugs  or  alcohol)  are  examples  of  negative campaigning  and  are  strictly  forbidden. 6.  Speeches  should  reflect  the  candidate’s  platform  and  contain  reasonably  attainable  goals,  not  items  that  are not  in  control  of  the  student  (i.e.  improving  school  lunch,  etc.)  The  approved  speech  cannot  be  changed  after submission.

Student  Council  Parents  – Your  child  has  expressed  interest  in  running  for  a  Student  Council  Officer  Position  in  the  Dripping  Springs Middle  School  Student  Council.  Students  will  be  required  to  attend  meetings  before  school  beginning  at 8:15  am  on  the  1st  and  3rd  Wednesdays  of  each  month.  On  meeting  days,  students  will  be  required  to provide  their  own  transportation  to  school  if  they  take  the  bus.  Student  Council  meetings  will  last  until  the  1st period  bell  (8:55  a.m.). If  elected  an  officer,  your  child  would  be  required  to  plan,  participate  and  attend  various  functions  before  and after  school  to  promote  the  student  council  and  the  student  council  sponsored  projects.  If,  after  election,  your child  can’t  fulfill  their  specific  duties  and  responsibilities,  he/she  will  be  asked  to  resign  their  position.  In addition,  he/she  will  be  required  to  attend  the  Texas  Association  of  Student  Councils  (TASC)  State Conference  on  November  8th  and  9th  in  San  Marcos.  Faculty  adviser(s)  will  be  in  attendance  and funding/transportation  will  be  provided.
