Modernism with Drawing with Henry Finkelstein Drawing Class:  18” x 24” or bigger drawing pad - 100 sheets - not newsprint, but inexpensive enough to do a lot of drawings. Canson Sketch is the best, (with the orange cover, not the recycled version). Utrecht is ok too. Absolutely avoid anything made by Borden and Riley.  Soft vine charcoal, 24 sticks, (not compressed, not medium or hard grade).  Genuine chamois cloth, 8” x 10”, the larger the better*  Any other materials you might like to draw with: pencils, red chalk, erasers, pen and ink, etc.  Workable fixative or unscented hairspray for use at home (Fixative/hairspray cannot be used in school or in the neighborhood.) *Genuine large chamois can be bought at Pearl Paint, Canal Street Gracious Home, or Automotive Stores. Beginning Drawing with Michele LiCalsi This course is designed to give students a solid foundation in the fundamentals of drawing. The skills necessary to render a subject three-dimensionally will be taught through a variety of exercises using still life and eventually the model. Observational techniques, composition and different artistic approaches will be explored as students use a variety of media to render the subject. This course is open to beginners with little or no previous drawing experience and is an excellent refresher for the artist who wants to review basic principals or improve their skill level with a particular drawing medium. *Students should bring a 6B drawing pencil and a drawing pad to the first class. **Supplies are suggested and can be substituted with comparable items by any company or from any art store. (Note: soft pastels can be substituted with oil pastels, Nu pastels, or colored pencils in comparable colors to the Rembrandt sticks). Materials List  Strathmore Drawing Pad, Medium, 11” x 14”  Strathmore Assorted Tints Charcoal Pad, 12” x 18”  Pink Pearl eraser, medium  Designed kneaded eraser, large  Staedtler Mars Lumograph 6H drawing pencil  Staedtler Mars Lumograph 6B drawing pencil  Black charcoal pencil  White charcoal pencil  Vine charcoal (soft)  Compressed Charcoal  Rembrandt soft pastels: - White #100.5 - Light Gray #704.8 - Medium Gray #704.5 - Black #700.5 Some notes regarding the National Academy School of Fine Arts: -Instructors attend full time classes two days per week to give instruction. ANATOMY FOR ARTISTS WITH ERIC MARCH MATERIALS LIST I recommend alternating drawing in pencil and charcoal. I have listed materials for each. The class also includes lectures. For these I recommend taking notes in pencil or pen with colored pencil if needed. Your notes can serve as a valuable resource in the future so I recommend dedicating a large sketchbook to them and thinking of your notes as part of your artistic production for the class. Pencil • Pencils: H, HB, 2B, 4B (2 of each) There are many different papers you can use with pencil. I’ve listed two options below, but there are others. The Bristol Plate is a tough, smooth paper that holds up to a lot of corrections. The Strathmore is a good all-around drawing paper. • Bristol Plate Smooth Finish Pad, 14” x 17” or larger • Strathmore 400 Series 18” x 24” “Drawing” Pad Charcoal Charcoal is a great medium that works very well for setting up value relationships quickly. The different kinds of charcoal serve different purposes in the stages of a drawing. Charcoal paper has a tooth to it that helps the charcoal “stick” to the paper. • Medium or soft vine charcoal sticks (8-12 sticks) • General's Charcoal Pencils: HB, 2B, 4B (2 of each) • General's White Charcoal Pencil or other White Pastel Pencil (1) • Canson Mi-Teinte Pastel Paper (It comes in a variety of colors of 25.5" x 19.5" sheets. Get either medium-value blue or grey colors of paper, 3-5 sheets.) Work on the smoother side of the paper. • Sanding pad (for sharpening charcoal pencils and vine charcoal- I recommend a corn-remover type sanding block that you can get at a drug store. See image below.)

Other: • Drawing board (28” x 22” or around that size. Your board should be larger than your paper size. Often just going to a lumberyard and getting a piece of 1/8” Masonite cut down to size is the best-and cheapest-way to get one. They also sell drawing boards in art stores that come equipped with handle-holes and built in clips can make it hard to use the board!) • Two Large 2" Paper Clamps or Bulldog Clips (for clipping paper to board) • Straight Razor blade (for sharpening pencils) • Kneaded eraser (looks like a square of gray clay) • Straight, thin knitting needle or BBQ skewer stick (for measuring) • Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating (for fixing drawings at home) • Glasseine (it’s like tracing paper and used for protecting stored drawings) • Portfolio for transporting paper drawings that is larger than paper size (do not roll your drawings!) • Sketchbook for lecture notes– 9” x 12” or 11” x 14” • Colored pencils for notes: yellow, red, orange, pink, green, blue • Plumb line (can simply be a thin 18” string tied to a small weight) • 4 small spring clamps for securing drawing board to easel

FIGURE DRAWING WITH ERIC MARCH MATERIALS LIST You can work in either charcoal or pencil. I have listed materials for each. I recommend trying both over the course of the class. The Strathmore is a good all-around drawing paper. • Strathmore 400 Series 18” x 24” “Drawing” Pad • Bristol Plate Smooth Finish Pad, 14” x 17” or larger • Drawing paper pad or newsprint pad for quick gesture drawings • You could also try loose paper: Bristol Plate Smooth Finish (2 or 3 ply) Rives BFK Fabriano Classico Charcoal • Medium or soft vine charcoal sticks (8-12 sticks) • General's Charcoal Pencils: HB, 2B, 4B (1 or 2 of each) • General's White Charcoal Pencil or other White Pastel Pencil (not a white colored pencil) • If you want to try working with sanguine: Sanguine or reddish-brown pastel pencil (Faber-Castell brand) • Canson Mi-Teinte Pastel Paper (It comes in a variety of colors of 25.5" x 19.5" sheets. Get either medium-value blue or grey colors of paper, 3-5 sheets) Work on the smoother side of the paper. For sanguine, a buff or beige paper works well. • Drawing paper pad or newsprint pad for quick gesture drawings • Sanding pad (for sharpening charcoal pencils and vine charcoal- I recommend a corn-remover type sanding block that you can get at a drug store.
