AP Studio Summer Assignments - 2D/Drawing Portfolio 2014-2015 The AP Studio Art class is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. Taking the AP Studio Art course requires a commitment and an energy level, which goes far beyond doing assignments and homework assigned to lower level art courses! You are required to complete 24 pieces for the class and it is important to finish at least 3 this summer. If you wish to be successful in this course, make up your mind right now that you will have to put in extra time to improve your skills and develop ideas.

Assignment 1 Sketchbook/Observational Drawing – Purchase a larger (at least 9x12) hardbound blank and a variety of things to draw with—pens, pencils, markers, etc. (Borders, Barnes and Nobles, Michaels, San Clemente Art Supply). The sketchbook should contain at least 125 pages. Throughout the summer, it is expected that you will draw from observation for a minimum of 90 minutes a week. If you draw 90 minutes a week for the entire summer, this will average to 16.5 hours of drawing over the course of the summer and your visual journal should reflect this amount of time invested. Work to the edges of the page and beyond. Explore gray scale, color, and mixed media. Draw anything that is interesting to you with any media— etc. (some ideas of things to draw— feet, hands, your face, landscapes, a still life, interior of a building, exterior of a building, plants, trees, a toothbrush, a hairbrush, a fingernail brush, the inside of a drawer or closet, tools, utensils, a toy vehicle, your unmade bed, eggs, fruits or vegetables cut in half— draw the inside, a set of keys, A small kitchen appliance, such as a coffee maker, toaster, blender, etc. from an unusual point of view, an object with an interesting texture) This will keep your skills honed! Practice showing a full range of values and practice a variety of shading techniques. Fill the page-pages!! Strive for unusual points of view, bold value, and strong contrast. Choose your media, choose your style. Look for the “unusual”. While some of your visual explorations will not fill the sketchbook page, you must expand a few of these ideas and complete at least 3 two-page drawings in the sketchbook. Fill 25 pages over the course of the summer. Title + date each page. Place one response on each page. Keep the backs of the journal pages blank. You may use words or enhance your work with words. Keep your artist journal out so you will be reminded to use it. Make art making a habit. (4 points / page = 100 points)

Assignment 2 Sketchbook/Visual Sources Collect 100 photos from any visual source. Cut and paste the pictures into your artist journal. DO NOT DRAW THESE PICTURES!!!!! Choose objects, colors, textures which are visually interesting. Do not be concerned about editing or using them at this point....just find them! You may use your own photos, pictures from magazines, the newspaper, brochures, etc. Photos may be pasted more than one per page. (1 point / image = 100 points)

You will turn this sketchbook in the first day of class for your first grade. (NO CREDIT GIVEN IF TURNED IN LATE) Assignment 3 Check out the AP Studio Art College Board website: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/sub_studioart.html This site contains ALL AP Studio Art information plus past art works from students to clarify the requirements and rigors of the College Board's Studio art program. There are 2 studio art portfolio options: Drawing and 2-D Design. You will be asked to select one of these areas as your 2012 -2013 focus. Read about each portfolio. Select one of the portfolios and go to the "breadth" section to view samples of student's art from years past. Go to the "Concentration" section to view samples of student art from years past. Pay particular attention to the concentration statements and the quality of the art on display. It is recommended that you download and print the portfolio course description of the portfolio you plan to complete during the coming year.

Assignment 4 Look at Art !!!!– Please attend at least one museum, gallery or art festival this summer. Collect post cards of artwork from your visit – attach to pages in your sketchbook. Document what you see in your sketchbook—write down the names of artists and work you like—make sketches of that work. Create ideas for your own work using the work of others as inspiration. Online museums and galleries do not qualify for this assignment.

Assignment 5: Artwork to turn in the first day of class. (Choose one.) **These should be portfolio ready. All assignments should begin with planning thumbnails and/or drawings in the sketchbook to show development of your concept---I will check for these. Use decent paper or hardboard (not framed canvas) and unless otherwise stated, the media is your choice. Size - at least 11”x 14” no larger than 18”x24”. (100 point)

(NO CREDIT GIVEN IF TURNED IN LATE) **Remember to think about composition – Balance – symmetry, asymmetry, and radial. Try using other principles like repetition and movement, unity or emphasis.. The 2D and Drawing portfolios are ALL about composition!! Think smart! Plan! Use another artist as inspiration. Use media you are already good at unless you want to do studies (keep these in your sketchbook) first! Quality craftsmanship is a must. a. Self-Portrait – Create a self-portrait using your own choice of media. You can work from a photograph or a mirror. Size-at least 11”x14 no larger than 18”x24. Could be acrylic, watercolor, graphite/ebony pencil, charcoal, mixed media, etc.

b. Tabletop Landscape – use a tabletop (or other large flat surface) as a backdrop for multiple small objects---beans, bars of soap, lipstick tubes, candy, nails, toys, fishing lures (ha2) etc.) Be imaginative with your small objects—you will have more fun. Arrange the objects so that you can focus on depth within the picture plane. Pile some on top of each other, space them out, or even try arranging them in a formation. Then draw them from observation—your point of view should not be from right over them but down at an angle that creates depth---at the eye level of a cat or a mouse. (Any Media) c. Outside looking in – Create a drawing in which you are doing just that---looking through a keyhole, a window, a door...You are observing from behind something... (Any Media) d. Presence/Absence – Draw an Interior that makes the viewer know someone was there but includes no figurative elements. Example – a shirt draped on a chair in the corner of a room, toys set-up near a window, a table with plates of half-eaten food.... (Any Media) e. Choose a Contemporary Artist (Do not simply choose another teenager with a website! The person you choose should be actively selling and showing their work. It is likely they will have an education from a college or university. In short—they will have a resume! ) Look at their work and create a work in the style of that artist (without copying an exact piece).

Assignment 6 Send an email to your AP Instructors at [email protected] [email protected] Please put “AP Studio Art” as the subject. In the email, please tell us the following: a) Who is your favorite artist or style of art and “why”? b) What is your favorite art media to work with and “why”? c) List an art technique you have always wanted to learn. Art Supplies - You will want to stock up on supplies as necessary. We provide some art supplies in the art room but with 24 pieces to complete your AP Studio art fee doesn’t cover it all. SOME ART SUPPLY RETAILERS are: San Clemente Art Supply, Michael’s Arts and Crafts, Dick Blick, www.dickblick.com

Note from your teachers: This course is NOT simply an extension of the high school art program. It is rather an extensive study of the techniques and technicians that allow the student to develop a

mature and individual style of their own through a complete understanding of skill building and making informed decisions about the direction of their art. Because this is a college level course you are expected to work as though you are in college. This means you will have to spend time outside of the block to complete and execute assignments. Our goal is to complete a 5 point (credit) portfolio by May; We are expecting that everyone who takes this class will be taking the EXAM in May. So get ready, get set, and let’s go have a great year. If you are ready for the challenge We are here to help you reach that goal. Keep your failures as well as successes. Don’t throw anything away! Questions? Do NOT wait or use “didn’t understand” as an excuse. Do not hesitate to email us—We are good about responding in a timely manner! Mrs. Adolph and Mrs. Maytorena [email protected] [email protected]
