‘For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.’ Ephesians 2:10 -

Create a story board or cartoon script to tell a Bible story (see the work of Roy Lichtenstein and the Pop art movement for ideas). Make a Triptych – a work of art (usually a painting or a panel) that is divided into three sections that are hinged together and can be folded shut or displayed open. E.g. Triptych of the nativity. Create a whole class mural by providing each pupil with a tiny section of a painting for them to enlarge with paint or paper collage. Show pupils examples of how Bible stories have been depicted through art. E.g. The Prodigal Son returns by Soichi Watanabe; Journey of the Magi by James Tissot and Moses parts the Red Sea https://smediacacheak0.pinimg.com/600x315/c3/20/df/c320df9e7b2206fed9e7e5285b33c706.jpg

Paint a portrait of a bible character. Can you add in clues and symbols that tell the story of that characters life? Use sculpture as inspiration. See ‘Jesus and Peter’ in Tabgha, Sea of Galilee. Create a puppet or textile wall hanging of a bible character. Create a collage using a variety of media. Consider 3D representations using construction card or objects creatively. Use tissue paper stained glass effect to depict a character. Create an icon.

To enrich and inspire your competition entries, book a tailor made guided tour at Chichester Cathedral. See the symbols and colours in the enormous tapestry by John Piper or make sketches of the musically inspired stained glass window by Marc Chagall. There are many other treasures to discover, as well as practical workshops to extend pupils’ learning. Contact: Sue in the Education Department to find out more [email protected] or 01243 812986

The explosion of the love of God by Joseph Nuttgens is a stained glass window in the Church of Saint Martin of Tours in Basildon, Essex. How has the artist explored the Holy Trinity? How could you depict it in your own piece of art? Study how the birth of Jesus has been depicted in art. Use Giotto’s – Scenes from the life of Christ – Birth of Jesus as a starting point. Stations of the Cross - research how they have been depicted in art. Look at Sussex artists like John Pelling and Eric Gill and their interpretations. Consider reliefs or wood block prints.

How does the Bible affect our lives today? Could this be captured through photography, video, animation or digital art? Create a collage of newspaper headline cuttings that illustrate, ‘living the story.’ Create a persuasive poster, using graphic design techniques. Consider a ‘Banksy’ style message. Make a short video or animation about an initiative inspired by the Christian faith.

- The Garden of Eden by John Dyer. Discuss how this painting is connected to the story of the Garden of Eden from the Bible. - The view from the Cross – James Tissot. How does this piece give a different perspective to the Easter story? - Use the design textile entitled, ‘Garden of Eden’ by C.F.A. Voysey as a starting point. - See the frieze in Understanding Christianity materials.

Illustrate a Bible verse or passage. See the work of Ivan Guaderrama. Use textiles, batik, felting, fabric collage for banner or picture. Ceramics, tiles, wire, foam or a range of media can be used for sculpture. Creative graphic or calligraphy writing. Emoticon.
