Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th October 2014

Welcome to yet another superb display of model engineering in all its fascinating variety. With hundreds of models of locomotives, rolling stock, traction, stationary and hot air engines, boats etc. plus workshop equipment and clocks – virtually every interest is represented. Welcome to the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, now in its 37th year. Again we present a fascinating exhibition for your enjoyment, with over a thousand models on display on over 40 club and society stands. We also have a full complement of specialist suppliers with nearly 50 companies represented, so in addition to viewing the model displays you'll be able to purchase virtually anything you might need for your modelling activities. Whatever you require, be it castings, materials, cutting tools, lathes or milling machines you'll find a wide selection, giving you the opportunity to compare and decide on the best for your needs. We also have a full range of lectures with a range of different subjects, giving something of interest for every visitor. In addition to the hundreds and hundreds of models on static display we have live steam on the 16mm narrow gauge layout and outside the exhibition hall the Model Steam Road Vehicles and a Miniature Railway will be in action for your enjoyment as well as full scale engines!

EIM WORKSHOP

OUR LECTURERS

Our Engineering In Miniature Workshop welcomes back our regular demonstrators including Derek Brown, Tony Phillips and Wally Sykes. We also welcome for the first time this year Max Pickering and Alan Savelio who will looking at CNC work.

We are very pleased to be able to present for your enjoyment a very full lecture programme. Below are details of our lecturers and what they will be presenting for your enjoyment. All lecturers take place in the lecture theatre which can be found at the rear of Hall 1, please exit the building by the rear door next to the cash machine.

The Coventry Model Engineering Society will again be supporting the workshop activities and members can be seen demonstrating everyday skills for modelling. They will also be working on a kit of the Pioneer provided by L A Services. The Pioneer is a two stroke engine, unusual in that it has two poppet valves, neither are cam operated and there is no crankcase or secondary compression. It works on the “loyal” cycle. Our thanks to Chester UK Ltd for sponsoring the workshop activities and the loan of machines – make sure you visit their stand opposite the workshop to see the full range. CuP Alloys (Metal Joining Ltd) and Western Steam Ltd On Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 2pm and 4pm by the main entrance Keith Hale and Helen Verall-Stait will be presenting a series of boiler brazing demonstrations building on from the theory lectures that Keith will also be presenting on those days in the lecture theatre.

DEREK BROWN Based in Rutland for over 30 years, Derek Brown has been intrigued with model engineering since a schoolboy, keen on locomotives in 00, 0, 3½”, 5” and 7¼” gauges and also very interested in the development of tooling and perfecting various methods and techniques. He has made many contributions to the model engineering press and has travelled the country giving talks to model engineering societies. A keen, but lapsed, pianist and repairer of church clocks, Derek is perhaps best known for his work on drill sharpening and metric screwcutting and not least for the books he has published, including the latest one on injectors. Workshop Work: A demonstration of steam injectors.

ALAN SAVELIO Based in Nottinghamshire for many years, which is also the birthplace of the Myford lathe, Alan has always taken a keen interest in engineering and experimental design. A passion for new technologies has motivated Alan to develop a CNC conversion kit for the Myford Super 7 lathe which is unique and has not been based on anyone else’s design. It was heralded as an “Incredible piece of equipment” by Myford’s own marketing team at Beeston in Nottingham. He is looking forward to answering many questions; so, don’t be afraid to ask him. He is also hoping to try out your machining suggestions which should be fun too! Workshop Work: CNC lathe demonstrations to highlight the lathes versatile capabilities and distinct advantages over using manual lathes.

MAX PICKERING Designed over two years by Max Pickering and built over 12 months by Max and Kevin Flint, Sweet Dreams is a scratch built 3 axis CNC machine capable of moving a cutting tool to any point within its working area to an accuracy of 5 microns. The design differs from the normal home built CNC machines in many ways, both in strength and functionality. At the show Sweet Dreams will be demonstrated working on acrylics and wood. Between them, Max and Kevin have played with (or are still playing with) anything from vintage tractors, motorbikes and steam rollers, to embedded electronics and autonomous drones. Their latest project is another scratch build, this time of an early 20th century living van to tow behind the Kevin’s 1913 Steam roller. Home workshop equipment has recently added a wood shop but continues to grow at a rate faster than the workshop can expand!

TONY PHILLIPS Tony Phillips began his working life as an apprentice tool maker and die sinker in the jewellery trade in Birmingham. Following this he moved into mechanical engineering, working for a multinational American company providing plate making equipment for the newspaper trade. This appointment gave Tony the opportunity to travel through Europe and the Far East imparting his technical expertise to colleagues. Tony has been interested in model engineering since the age of 11 but only took it up seriously when he retired. His interests are mainly internal combustion engines and machine tool equipment and at present he is working on a number of different IC engines plus a gear hobbing machine. Currently living in Worcestershire Tony’s other main passion is aviation and hang gliding and paragliding having learned to fly some 40 years ago.

WALLY SYKES Wally’s engineering life started when he took the School technical report to Vickers Armstrong Elswick works, Newcastle. He was signed on as an apprentice machine operator and from there, he worked in many mechanical and fabrication workshops, ending up as an Engineering Fitter for P&O. He moved to Ross-onWye 38 years ago and was taken on as Chief Engineer repairing farm machinery. He is resident Engineer at Hereford Society of Model Engineers. Workshop Description: English Wheel - The English Wheel was mainly built from steel found in the scrap yard. The tools and rollers were made from discarded hydraulic ram shaft, and driven by an electric drill. The paint cost more than the build material.

PHIL ABBOTT Phil Abbott has been a member of the Blackheath Model Powerboat Club since he was old enough to hold a boat (over 45 years). Belonging to a club which his grandfather and great uncle formed in 1928, and whose father was also a lifelong member, he was brought up surrounded by steam and boats. He has continued to improve and develop the high speed marine steam plant, and is currently working on a flash steam plant using electronic controlled feed pumps. Lecture Topic: Steam in Model Boats Lecture Description: Looking at the various designs of steam plants and layouts for model boats.

BOB BRANSON Bob Bramson is a Vehicle Acceptance Engineer for railway rolling stock including steam traction and is an associate of Lloyd's Register Rail. He has been involved with the examination and certification of many of the preserved locomotives that run on Network Rail including the new A1 Pacific "Tornado." A model engineer since his early teens, he builds steam locomotive miniatures and specialises in developing steam ancillaries including vacuum ejectors and boiler feed injectors. Lecture Topic: Experiences of a Vehicle Acceptance Engineer – Steam Traction Lecture Description: This lecture will cover the acceptance of rolling stock on British Railways and Network Rail looking at; The role of the Vehicle Acceptance Engineer, Railway Group Standards - Heritage Rolling Stock, , Restoration of locomotives, Annual Examinations, Boilers, Mechanical, Collisions and Failures, Notable Experiences and The Future.

DEREK BROWN Based in Rutland for over 30 years, Derek Brown has been intrigued with model engineering since a schoolboy, keen on locomotives in 00, 0, 3½", 5" and 7¼" gauges and also very interested in the development of tooling and perfecting various methods and techniques. Lecture Topic: 3D Modelling Lecture Description: This lecture seeks to give an account of the process of embarking upon 3D drawing, through the eyes of one thoroughly familiar with the well established 2D conventions. Derek’s article can be seen in the September 2014 issue of Engineering in Miniature.

KEITH HALE Keith has an honours degree in metallurgy and has been involved in the silver solder market for 44 years. He hopes to be able to pass on some of the knowledge and experience gained over that time. He was, until recently, MD of CuP Alloys Ltd. Lecture Topic: Overcoming Heating Problems -- The Key to Successful Silver Soldering Lecture Description: Silver soldering is not a black art. It is a very simple, albeit skilful process made difficult by not adhering to the basic principles. . Heating is often the cause of, and the answer to many silver soldering difficulties. Keith aims to offer guidance to improve the quality of your brazing and reduce the amount of alloy used. Keith’s article can be seen in the September, October and November 2014 issues of Engineering in Miniature.

MALCOLM HIGH Malcolm High’s interest in model engineering came from his father and he can remember having one of the first 000 Lone Star electric railways as a child. He also had a large Meccano set, model boats and model aircraft. A lifelong interest in model engineering developed alongside a career in mining, then mechanical engineering and finally lecturing. After producing over 11,800 laser cut parts he decided to have a go at 3D printing. This lecture will expand on the article he wrote for Engineering in Miniature and focus on the problems he had to overcome. Lecture Topic: Building a 3D printer on the cheap from a kit. Lecture Description: How does a 3D printer work? What problems were there in building the kit and how were these overcome. What can it do for model engineers and how do you make it do it? What are the future prospects for 3D printing?

NOEL SHELLEY Noel Shelley is widely known for his vast experience in building and running his own furnace and his foundry work. Lecture Topic: This year Noel hosts a very open Question and Answer session on running a small foundry – come along and ask him all the questions you need to now and learn from his vast experience.

JOHN WINN John is a member of the City of Oxford Society of Model Engineers and for over twenty years has been an active member of the Steamboat Association of Great Britain. His main interest is in the production of steam engines and boilers suitable to power steam launches up to eighteen feet in length. To date he has produced many different types of engines almost invariably without the use of castings, most of which have been exhibited here at the Midlands Exhibition. Lecture Topic: Abingdon’s African Queen Lecture Description: In his talk today he will outline the many facets of the hobby of steam boating including building hulls, boiler construction and engine manufacture.
