What is our system? Our solar system consist of nine planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and pluto. Which all rotate around a medium sized star called the sun. Our solar system has billions of stars. We have only been able to travel to one place in the solar system which was earths moon. Back to table of contents

Mars Mars is an inner planet. Mars has a Mars rusty look. It is one of he rocky planets like Earth. It has many dust storms. Its red color comes from materials in its core that contains Iron and oxygen. Ice covers the south pole of mars. Mars has the largest mountain in the solar system it is three times the size of Earths mount everest. Mars has 2 moons.

The Sun sun The sun is a medium size star that our solar system revolves around. The sun is our main light source. It keeps every thing on earth alive. It is a big ball of burning gas. The sun is very large it is 865,400 miles wide. you couldn’t even get close to it without burning up.

Earth

Earth is the only planet that contains life ( that we know of). Because it has an oxygen and water source. there are over millions of living things on the earth. for example plants, animals, and humans. Earth, like other planets has storms. earth rotates on tilted axis. It takes earth 365 days to revolve around the sun. It takes earth 24 hours to rotate fully on its axis.

Mercury Mercury is the closet planet to the sun. It got its name from the roman god the fleet messenger. It revolves very fast around the sun but it rotates very slow on its axis. It has no moons. Its surface is mostly covered in craters. Mercury is the hottest planet in the solar system. Mercury moves really fast at about 107,000 mph.

Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun. It is named after the king of the gods from roman mythology. It is 480 million miles from the sun. Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. Jupiter is one of the four gas planets. The volume of jupiter is about 1,317 Earths. Jupiter has 63 moons.

Venus

Venus is the second planet from the sun. Its named after the roman goddess of love.Venus is brightest at sun rise. It takes venus 224.7 earth days to orbit the sun.Venus is a very hot planet at about 900 (F) it is the hottest planet in the solar system. Sometimes venus seems to change shape.Venus is called the sister of Earth.Venus is 67 million miles from the sun. Its venus 243 days to rotate on its axis.

Saturn Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. It is one of the planets made of gas. It has the largest ring in the solar system. It is a very cold planet. It temperature is -287 degrees. One year in saturn is about 11,000 Earths days long. It takes saturn 29 years to revolve around the sun. Saturn takes only 10 hours and 40 minutes to rotate on its axis. There has been three major storms on saturn. Scientist saw the first storm in 1930.

Uranus

Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun and the third largest planet. Uranus revolves around the sun every 84 Earth days. The planet has three layers #1 is a rocky core, layer #2 is an is an icy mantle layer #3 is an outer gaseous

Neptune Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. It takes neptune 165 days to orbit the sun. Neptune is about 2.8 billion miles from the sun. it got the name neptune from the roman god of sea. If neptune were hollow you could fit about 60 Earths in it! Neptune is one of the giant planets. Neptune is 30,776 miles wide. The temperature is about 360 degrees fahrenheit. Winds on Neptune reach about 1,500 mph. Neptune has eight moons and eight rings.

Asteroids Asteroids are small rocks that travel around the sun. Some Asteroids even have their own moons. Most asteroids are only about a mile wide. All asteroids follow what we call an astroid belt that is between mars and Jupiter. The largest astroid is ceres is 500 miles wide.

Meteors and Meteorites when rocks break off of a planet of an astroid it is called an Meteorite. have you ever heard of a falling star? Well the name of the falling star is a meteor. meteor are also known as meteor showers. Sometimes meteors rub up against Earth and creates friction.

Comets Comets Over 100 billion Comets orbit the out side edge of the solar system and Neptune. Comets have heads and tails. The heads is about 80,000 Miles wide. The middle of the head is made up of ice, frozen gases, and tiny pieces of matter. Comes are sometimes called dirty snow balls.

Telescopes A telescope is a very powerful tool that they use to look into space. It has a very powerful lense thats how they look miles and miles into space. This is how we were able to learn so much about the planets texture, size, and surface. We can learn and have learned so much with this great device.

Men and Women in Space

The first woman in space was Valentina vladimirovna tereshkova. The first man in space was Yur Akekseyevich Gagarin. the first man on the Moon was Neil Armstrong. A lot of people have been in space.

Probes

Probes are used for gathering information on space. They tend to be launched in space and and left there for years and years. They orbit around the planet that they were sent to and take pictures.

Distance: A length in between objects Gravitational force: A very strong force that is in a space of one body that forces against the other. gravity: is a force around earth that pulls objects to earth. mass: the size of an object. satellite: Is an artificial body that is put in space to orbit the planets to collect information. scale: Is one objects size compared to another. stars: A lone light in space like the sun.
