CURRICULUM VITA June 17, 2013 Introduction For over 40 years, from September 1, 1971 to June 1, 2012, Donald E. Wilkes, Jr. was a law professor at the University of Georgia School of Law. Since June 1, 2013, Prof. Wilkes has been a Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Georgia School of Law. Prof. Wilkes received his degrees from the University of Florida (B. A. With Honors (History) 1965; J. D. With High Honors 1969), and was a law clerk to U. S. District Judge Ben Krentzman in Tampa, Florida from 1969 until 1971, when he joined the law faculty of the University of Georgia School of Law. From 1975 until 1976, while on a leave of absence from the law school, Prof. Wilkes was a Fellow in Law and the Humanities at Harvard University. During the decade preceding his retirement, Prof. Wilkes taught Habeas Corpus, English Legal History, Postconviction Relief, and a Dreyfus Case Seminar. In addition, for 37 years, from 1971 until 2007, Prof. Wilkes taught Criminal Procedure. Prof. Wilkes has 269 scholarly publications to his credit, including 5 books (which have gone through a total of 21 second or subsequent editions), 20 book supplements, a book chapter, 14 law review publications, 5 encyclopedia articles, 2 bar journal articles, a search and seizure law report article, and over 170 scholarly articles in professional journals, magazines, and newspapers. One of Prof. Wilkes’ books is a 3-volume treatise over 4,800 pages long; another is a 2-volume treatise nearly 1,600 pages long. Prof. Wilkes has made many scholarly presentations to civic, professional, and educational organizations and groups, and has delivered numerous public speeches. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida on July 30, 1944, Prof. Wilkes was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1972. Prof. Wilkes has represented criminal defendants and applicants for postconviction relief at both the trial and appellate level in federal and state courts. See, e.g., United States v. Dean, 752 F. 2d 535 (11th Cir. 1985); Scarpa v. United States Bd. of Parole, 477 F. 2d 278 (5th Cir.), vacated, 414 U. S. 809, 94 S. Ct. 79, 38 L. Ed. 2d 44 (1973), on remand, 501 F. 2d 992 (5th Cir. 1973); Walker v. Caldwell, 472 F. 2d 1226 (5th Cir. 1973); Isaacs v. Balkcom, 85 F. R. D. 354 (M. D. Ga. 1980); Dungee v. Hopper, 241 Ga. 236, 244 S. E. 2d 849 (1978); McCarty v. State, 165 Ga. App. 241, 299 S. E. 2d 95 (1983).
