Foreword ‘Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine’ (People live in each other’s shadows)

Over the course of our lives many of us will experience times when we feel low and we are concerned about our mental health. During these times it’s really important to remember that it’s o.k. not to be o.k. However, it’s also really important to let someone know and seek support. The Education Working Group of Mayo County Development Board identified the need to produce a directory, to support schools and out-of-schools education and training settings in their work with young people. We recognise that those of you working to educate, train and support our young people face increasing challenges in the area of health promotion, and in particular mental health. Therefore support from the wider local and national community is vital. This ‘Directory of Mental Health Support Services: Mayo’ outlines supports available locally and nationally and provides a short description of what these services do and how to contact them. We hope this information will be useful for managers and all workers within school and out-of-school settings. We in the Mayo Suicide Prevention Alliance were delighted to be able to share the listing of resources we had compiled so that this directory could be published. Mayo Suicide Prevention Alliance is a network of organisations and groups involved in mental health promotion, mental health services and suicide prevention in the County. Our key aims are to make sure that all the work being done in this area is well co-ordinated, promoted and supported by current best practice. We are especially grateful to all the organisations and groups who have agreed to be listed in this directory. We would also like to thank Edel O’Donnell and her colleagues Caroline Folan and Eileen Holland, Health Promotion Department, HSE, for compiling the final version of this document. We have done everything we can to make sure that the information in this directory is correct at the time of print. Any amendments or updates can be accessed when our website www.mayobewell.org goes live later this year. We would like to thank the Mayo County Development Board for funding the publication and distribution of ‘Directory of Mental Health Support Services: Mayo’. We hope this directory will be of practical use to you in your work. Mary O’Sullivan, Chair of Mayo Suicide Prevention Alliance, Working in partnership with the Education Working Group of Mayo County Development Board 24th September, 2013
