Borrowing Library eBooks using the Overdrive App for Android Devices Updated 11/21/16

You need to install the free OverDrive App to download EPUB eBooks on the following phones:  Android™ v.4.0, or newer (for example, Samsung Galaxy Tab; Note 4 or S5, Google Nexus 9, Moto X, LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3)  Windows Phone 7 or 8 The following tablets also run the Android Operating System:  Google Nexus; 7, 9, and 10  Asus Transformer Pad TF701  Samsung Galaxy; Tab 2, 3 and 4, Pro  Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2  Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 7.0 or 10.1  Sony Xperia Tablet Z ** This is not an all-inclusive list. 1. Install and download the Overdrive App from either of the following app stores:

**You can find the links for the stores on the Home screen of your device. a.

Type “OverDrive” in the search box at the top of the screen.

The icon should look like this:

Tap the name of the app when it appears in the list. Tap the “Install” button near the app title. After the installation completes, tap the “Open” button.

Sign up for an OverDrive account

Tap the “Sign up” button.

Fill out the online form (see the image below) by typing your Name, Email Address and creating a Password. Then tap the “Sign up” button to continue. The app should open automatically. b.

3. Access Northland’s OverDrive digital catalog page a.

Tap inside the Add a Title box.

Type Northland Public Library inside the Search box. Then tap the Search button below

Tap the “Northland Public Library” title in the list.

Tap the “Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh” title within the “Library Systems” list.

Tapping the title will bookmark the website for your future use.

The OverDrive digital catalog should appear on your screen (see the image below.)

4. Find an EPUB eBook to borrow The following instructions describe one of a few different ways to search the OverDrive catalog. a.

Tap the magnifying glass icon to bring up the search options.

Tap the word “Advanced” to bring up the Advanced Search screen.

If you would like to search for a specific title or author, type your search terms in the corresponding boxes. To conduct a general search, leave those boxes blank. c.

Tap the “Formats” drop-down menu. Tap “EPUB eBook”.

Tap to choose “Available now” from the “Availability” drop-down menu if you would like to find an eBook that you can check out immediately. Otherwise, you can choose a different option. d.

A page with EPUB eBooks will appear on your screen (see the image below.)

A purple banner with the word “AVAILABLE” across the top of the ebook cover indicates that the item is available for immediate check out.

A white banner with the words “Wait List” across the top of the ebook cover indicates that all of the available copies of that item are checked out. You may click the “PLACE A HOLD” link to place a hold on any of these items.

5. Check out (“borrow”) an EPUB eBook a.

Tap the word “BORROW” at the bottom of the eBook cover.

If you are not already signed in, type your library card number in the white box. For extra convenience, tap the checkbox next to the “REMBEMBER MY CARD NUMBER ON THIS DEVICE” option. Then tap the “Sign In” button below it. b.

Tap the set of books icon to view your checked out items on your Loans page.

6. Download the eBook to the OverDrive app

Tap the “CHOOSE A FORMAT” drop-down menu. Then tap EPUB eBook.

Tap the “Add to app” button.

Your eBook should begin to download immediately. To view your downloaded eBook, tap the Home menu icon corner of the screen. Then tap the “Bookshelf” option. c.

Tap the eBook cover to open it on your screen.

OverDrive app reading features After you open your eBook, you can tap in the middle of your device screen to access the following features: Adjust page layout and viewing features: brightness, font size, margins, line spacing, etc.

7. How to return an eBook early: a. Tap the Home menu icon “Bookshelf” option.

b. Press and hold your finger on the eBook cover for at least two seconds. Tap “Return to Library”.

c. Tap the “Yes” button to complete the return process.

Returning an eBook brings it back to the library collection, as well as removes it from your device.

8. How to search for additional titles: a. Return to your Bookshelf screen by tapping the Home menu icon left corner of the screen. Then tap the “Bookshelf” option.

b. Tap the “Add a Title” box.

c. The main OverDrive catalog page appears on your screen (see the image below). Tap the magnifying glass icon to begin your search for another item.
